I'm feeling incredibly rough today - dizzy, cloudy headed etc, but have come in to work because I don't want people thinking I'm pulling a sickie for Fallout 4!!

Likewise! in fact i was feeling rough yesterday, after you sorted the minecraft stuff out i headed to bed (around 6pm my time).

8 hours of work till fallout..

So what's people thoughts so far, it's ran well on the PS4 last night and it's been fun so far. I did mess up a bit :( with one thing and I hope I can get it back with out restarting.

I'm enjoying it, in a way it feels smaller than previous games but once you get into the cities/towns and realise there's tonnes of battles going on around you inside buildings and whatnot it does feel quite epic.

I wandered into a huge battle between people wielding flamethrowers and miniguns earlier, didn't have my power armor so I kinda just watched..

I've been watching Draikey play it, looks good and may pick it up at the weekend with my discount. :) Looks to be a number of bugs with shots not registering near walls though.

Played it all last night.

It's awesome. No issues on the PC yet, I did pre-disable the godrays though.

The storyline (no spoilers!) that I have seen so far feels pretty engaging, I haven't progressed down the main line at all and still doing side stuff near the starting area.

Building the settlements is actually pretty fun, i expected it to be very gimmicky and just to have 1 or 2 areas in the game that you can build, I was wrong on that front.

I think i have had the ending spoiled, people seem to be posting it anywhere they can, i think i saw it on a news article comment section :(

(Slightly spoilery gameplay mechanic discussion)

It feels very odd to not have weapon durability, initially I was hoarding multiple copies of the guns I found because I expected durability, but ti just ain't there. The way weapons are modded is radically different, but I kinda like it - you can make weapons for specific jobs if you gather the right materials. Also the focus on upgrading/customising your Power Armour is quite nice, albeit the way Power Armour works is radically different now.

It's worth mentioning that a lot of weapon upgrades require junk items. if you decide to shack up somewhere (Red Rocket, Sanctuary, etc) you want to store those junk items in the workbenches (use the Transfer option). It took me quite some time to figure out that junk items are broken down as-and-when you need the items they have (such as a Gold Pocket Watch gives you, I think, 2 gears and 2 springs) which kind of annoys me, but the 'crafting' menus do show you how many you need and how many you have. I'd still just rather have a bench full of component parts (springs/gears/wood/steel/bone/leather/cloth/ceramic/etc) than a bunch of generic items.

I'm sitting on the Fallout 4 fence, haven't played any of the previous games either. Got a lot else on in life atm so doubt I'd have the time for it right now, but from what I've heard it does sound pretty gud. :)

I'm finding it fun so far, Built a "speaker" in my settlement as i was curious, but it just emits a constant whine which you can change the pitch of :l so that got removed xD

Also Explosives are OP. I've died 5 times and it's always because i've accidentally blown myself up with a mine. Full health to dead instantly.

To be fair, they were a little, say, unrealistic, in previous games..

Yeah i suppose, They're very unforgiving in this game, Though it's how it should be really.

I love the ambiance of the game as well, when you approach an area and can hear a raging gun battle in the distance, the dialog from enemies when you are stealthing around and they loose sight of you. I overheard some bandits having an argument at one point.

Although radiation storms/fog are a pain.

I'm really loving that aspect as well, I came across two settlers at a campfire who were having a chat - came back to see them about 12 hours later and all that remained was their corpses and a few corpses of wild dogs!

Can't take credit for this...but here you go...epic weapon from start.

As soon as you get out of the vault for the first time go to the red rocket to find your dog. Then return to the vault with your dog. Once you're back in the vault find the room with the cell where you'll find the cryolator inside a display. It'll have a master lock but don't worry. Call your dog and select the fetch option. Then tell him to find items. After you do this he'll go towards the cryolator and get it off the display for you. Now you have the gun but no ammo. Don't worry. Talk to your dog again and select the transfer items option and you'll find him holding 200 cryo cells. Congrats! (You can do this at any time too btw, it doesn't have to be right at the start)

Now people have had some time to play more what are your thoughts? I have held off buying it as the removal of the SPECIAL system, karma and an apparently very linear progression (very little consequences no matter what options you pick the results end up the same) really put me off. The lack of weapon degrading seems a bit of a step back as well. One of the things I liked in previous fallout games (especially more early in the game) was when you had some awesome gun but only saved it for special occasions as you didn't have anything to repair it with. Seems like now once you have some decent guns the only thing limiting their use is ammo.

Now it could be all of this is true and the game is still awesome (I hope) but it is enough that I think I will maybe wait a bit for a price drop and mod support.

Is it as dumbed down as it seems (compared to previous FO games)?

Weapon degradation is indeed gone, which bugs me, too. I'm sure modders will put it back in at some point. Weapon modification exists and is quite varied. It doesn't feel like the older Fallout games but it's still a good system. Hoarding Junk items is pretty important.

Karma appears to be gone, but that doesn't stop people from liking you/not liking you. If you steal stuff, they will still take issue with that.

The SPECIAL system is still there, but skill categories (Energy Weapons, Explosives, Lockpicking, etc) are not. Skills are levelled up through literally gaining levels and assigning points. Each skill has multiple tiers and a SPECIAL requirement. Each tier has a level requirement. (For example, Lockpicking requires Perception 5, I think? So Perception 5 gives you the option to skill Lockpicking (which upgrades you from Novice to.. whatever the next level is of locks), but the next tier requires, say Level 12, but still 5 PER.) The skill tree looks confusing but I feel it's quite similar to Skyrim's, just laid out differently.

Building your own settlement is kinda cool, but Fallout's typical "We're not going to give you a tutorial" syndrome means you're going to have to Google a few things. I haven't done a drastic amount of it yet so I'm not sure what its benefits are.

Oh, and aiming for the face is way more important now.
