localzuk Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 So my gaming PC is now coming up on 4 years old (except the graphics card which is a few months old). The CPU is getting long in the tooth (to the extent I can't run Minecraft FTB Infinity standalone on it, I have to run a server and connect to it). How often do you lot replace your gaming PC?

Domo Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 Got my 1st PC when i was like 11, used that for 6 years (it was crap but it worked), got a lightly better computer which lasted about 2 ears. My current computer which cost me about £990, i'm hoping for it to last me at least 4 years. It may need some upgrading down the line, but i wouldn't replace the whole thing unless i was extremely far behind the decent tech.

DalekSec Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 Every September I buy a new bit of kit, September just gone got me an I7 and new mobo. Next year plan is 32gb ram (up from 16gb) year after that (or maybe same as before depending on saving) get me a titan!

I always follow this rule as well - it all depends on the game I'm playing at the time. If it isn't as smooth as I'd like it then I research if an upgrade will help and buy it if I can afford it

For me it doesn't tend to be Games, it tends to GIS software. Every couple of years the military archaeology society I belong to takes on a project for someone like the Archaeological Data Service, or English Heritage and I have to upgrade to make sure I can deal with all the data! We're about to start a project mapping and documenting remaining military architecture features from napoleonic to immediately post war on the isle of purbeck. English Heritage have provided some GIS software and basically my Dell first gen i7 8gb won't hack it. English Heritage recomend a dual xeon workstation with 32gb ram and 1tb hard drive.

With my gaming time somewhat restricted over the last couple of years my aging rig has done fine (four to five years old) working through a back catalogue. There are things coming out soon that I will want to play but won't be able to with decent settings, even at my stunted 1680x1050 resolution. My old Phenom II should be fine, but a new GPU is calling.

CAM Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 I don't, welcome to PC. Framerate is dropping, time for a new GFX card. Load times are slow, pop in an SSD (best performance boost ever!). Quad core is the new standard? Time for a CPU and Motherboard upgrade to ditch this old dual core so SR4 and Battlefield run. But only after attempting to overclock it into a tri core. Might throw some more RAM in next....

featured_spectre Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 Every 5 years for mobo and CPU. 3 years for gfx card. ram if the mobo supports the old ram, I put it in, if not, I buy new. Monitor I keep as long as possible...last one was 7ish years before it died the other week (thanks to @DaveP I have a replacement).

That be very true, but the case is the first thing i see when i walk into the room. and its the thing with the power button so i need to look at it at some point

Picked it up from some guy off one of those FaceBook selling groups, seemed legit but obviously didn't know it's probably worth over 5x that much. I expected it to be goofed, but works great now I've added Win10 2x1080p screens and an SSD. Plays everything I want too, not that it gets used much haha
Arreks Posted November 6, 2015 Posted November 6, 2015 My i7 and 980 combo should keep me going for a few years I hope. The only stuff I change relatively frequently (once a year maybe) is case / internal accessories / watercooling kit. I'm going for a hard tubing setup on both GPU and CPU next.

PETG does lose water quicker due to evaporation/permeation, so you'll need to buy more every now and again to top up, but it's much easier to bend and much more durable during impact. Oh, worth noting there are mentions of PETG not playing nicely with UV lighting. So careful with that. I did have a proper custom loop a while ago, but it was just too much effort to swap parts or clean the machine, so I've gone with a H100i GTX and a 980ti Hybrid. Most of the benefits, none of the mess Doesn't look as good, though Edited November 6, 2015 by Garacesh
