Sheridan Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 We host an intranet here (asp/html) with lots of links/resources, bookings systems, reporting systems etc. Its all hosted on IIS with SQL databases and was written in house so is very customised to our needs. However its time for it to die as GAFE is all anyone uses now - apart from some things like room bookings (which we will need alternatives for) Does anyone else still host an intranet, or do you all drop your uses straight the their vle/email homepage in their browsers now?
Rob_D Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 These days our intranet is just a couple of simple "home" pages with links to all the different web and internal resources people use (webmail, moodle, ect.) It's easier for us to it that way as we still have a couple of internally hosted resources (support sites, help pages, that kind of thing). 1
hallb15 Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 We use the Spiceworks portal. Does everything we need (with a few minor tweaks.) 1
unixman_again Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 We host a Joomla! based intranet with links to all the things that people might need like email, policies, standard documents etc. On the front page is the today in college notice, the weekly briefing and general staff notices. These last three parts are updated by several people. As we have users with a range of experience, from those who shouldn't be let near a computer to experienced users, we have word documents that they change and save and save it again as "web page filtered". This is displayed using an iframe. 1
3s-gtech Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 We do, and it has been built upon and expanded massively over the last couple of years. It's a hub of information for them and has social features as well as school events, their timetable, their Papercut info, Eclipse info etc. 1
bald_pig Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 We have multiple sharepoint sites for staff, students and parents. 1
Sheridan Posted September 30, 2015 Author Posted September 30, 2015 I did think about moving to Sharepoint, but as GAFE and the VLE provide most of the facilities it seemed like duplication. We have staff notices, classifieds, bookings systems, resources etc on our intranet now - but apart from the custom coded parts nothing that couldn't be dumped on the vle.
win Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 Sharepoint on site here, but looking to migrate to sharepoint office 365 1
SteveM555 Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Intranet will help to give your internal communications their own identity and prevent employees confusing internal and external information. Bot? - Lots of one liners on every thread this morning.....
Davit2005 Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 SharePoint here waiting to be released after one more stage of tweaks , can't wait to get rid of our Content Management System that is flakey at best of times. 1
theeggmaster Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 We do everything through our Website and GAFE. Staff and Students get different views and different access to Google Sites. Works seamlessly. 1
TechMonkey Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 First thing I set up here when I started just a few years ago. All static at the moment with links to resources like room booking and educational bits we buy (linguascope etc). 1
SteveM555 Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Ours is quite basic looking, large blocks with images/text to our website, email, internal room booking etc. - It detects if the user is a teacher or pupil and displays different information. It's due for a re-design and probably move to a content management system in future. 1
Sheridan Posted October 8, 2015 Author Posted October 8, 2015 Thanks for all the various info, I think I might keep ours for a little while yet, even if it's just a springboard to all the services and links.
mrbios Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 We have a very similar thing to yourself, a little drupal site, google search in the middle, and 3 blocks of helpful links to internal and external resources along the bottom section. I've not touched it since i made it apart from adding or editing the odd resource link....i should really do something productive with it.
Sylv3r Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 We are also a hosted Sharepoint user - staff, students and parents all receive a different view upon logon. We will probably migrate across to Sharepoint on Office365 over the next 12 - 18 months.
timbo343 Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 We do but we only use it as a landing page with shortcuts to other sites and will be having one for the BYOD services once i manage to get the MITM cert out to BYOD devices. I do like the intranet that @SovietRussia has when they posted a screenshot of it on a thread on here, it looks great.

It keeps evolving when I think of new things to add, here is a current look: and we went back to 2004 and launched Blogs straight onto it! It is ridiculous when looking back to see how it has evolved.
dastrix Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 Is that run on wordpress? SovietRussia Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 I liked the information you had on it like the student timetable. Only reason it is missing is because of it's a test user with no assigned timetable in SIMS.
ITGURU Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 I developed an in house SQL/ASP intranet several years ago. It served several purposes 1. Was our behaviour system as SIMS wasn't good enough for what they wanted. it recorded positive/negative behaviour and then at the end of each term students with least negative comments received a reward. 2. Library system - Developed in house using VB the library system had 2 sides - staff had VB software for managing the library, and from students side they could view books they had taken out, when due back and leave reviews for other students and also to know when books that were already out on loan would be returned. Only think it's used for now is a basic on-call web page where if s teacher needs support they can click the button and sends an email for help in their classroom if students mis-behave. Died a few years back when we merged schools.
Edu-IT Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 Is that run on wordpress? I wouldn't be able to resist creating badges for every occasion. 1
SovietRussia Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 Is that run on wordpress? I wish - custom built over 2 years. Update for 12th October: 3021 lines of code.
