As of the end of the summer, we are, at last, all SSD :D it feels so luxuriously indulgent and bourgoisie to have spare SSDs lying around after three years of doling them out like golden tickets. We may not be advanced in much here (by choice), with no iPads, no fancy 4k touchscreens, no whizz-bang fanciness, but I feel pretty chuffed that we've managed this. It's the sort of thing that no parent will ever care about on a Year 5 Information Evening, but makes an actual, real world, appreciable difference to the every day.

 

Anyway, I was wondering: how far along are you all on the same path? Partly for curiosity, partly so I can boast about it at my upcoming performance management if it turns out we're one of the first :)

 

And so there's some actual meat to the thread: any horror stories of brands to avoid? We're probably half and half with Crucial (m4, MX100, BX100) and Samsung (840, 840 EVO) and they've all been dandy.

We have the same here now, except 16 laptops which have hybrid drives which I couldn't justify replacing. Most are crucial drives of some description, have had 1 failure in the last 2 years so not too bad really. (around 200 computers)

 

Also managed to get rid projectors from everywhere except our interactive floors and 2 halls.

Yeah, in everything other than our newest Macs still in warranty, these will get swapped in once the warranty goes. 800 or so workstations done, and a few in servers where possible (including a set of 4 in RAID 0!)

About 1/3 of our site is ssd (as we renew we install them) and staff all have surface pro 3s for staff laptops. and 12x 400gb ssds in raid 10 on server. Good for databases Edited by rrrrr

Crucial M4. We had one fail. Never buying Crucial again! :D All other SSDs are working perfectly.

 

According to SCCM we currently have 312 SSDs, although this doesn't yet include all PCs that were upgraded during the summer holidays (there's another 40-50 to add) and ~23 Macs.

 

There are a lot of different makes and models, but the vast majority of our SSDs are from Samsung.

How are you getting on upgrading the firmware on the 840 EVOs? We still have quite a few to do. :(

lol stuff like this makes me realise I have no clue how to use SCCM. Ours just about does Windows Updates...really need to learn how to do more

Feeling bad for @sonofsanta as most people replying seen to be hot on his tail. We're just rolling out our first lot and it'll be at least 3 years before we catch up. We don't have any money.... But I've been told to arrange for teachers to have an iPad each. I'm very impressed that you've persuaded your SLT to adopt such a sensible strategy and see it through.

 

Am I really that far behind everyone, or are there loads of you who could help sonofsanta to boost his appraisal :D

We putting our very first SSD in on Monday, but all teachers here have iPads now.

60 pc's left to do out of 650 in total. Easy to sell to LT, £45 per pc to refresh it for at least 3 more years or £300 per pc for a new one. RAM upgrades to 8Gb next year ready for Win 10.3r2 rollout in Summer 2016. Have just added SCCM to our EES so we can start the initial builds.

 

As others have said, you work on a PC without a SSD these days and it's just so slow

Were buying refurb PCs now and sticking the SSDs in ourselves.

 

£110 for a HP core i5 4GB RAM grade A 12 months warranty and then £40 for a 120GB sata3 SSD

 

Or £50 for a dell core2duo 3ghz 4GB RAM grade A 12 months warranty. With an added SSD they make great office machines or machines for areas of the school where they only require word PowerPoint and the Internet etc

 

The machines are great and half the cost of new

Our most recent desktops and laptops all have ssd's. The rest of the pc's (dual and quad cores) will most likely be replaced with a new PC with an SSD rather than replacing the HDD with SSDs.

We fitted all teacher and admin workstations with SSD's over the summer. Definitely a huge difference and people have commented. Such a difference! If only we had the budget to do everything! :D

 

Similar here, but without the comments! We have a couple of teachers who always complain their PC is slow. So we upgraded them to ssd which boosted the login speed to less than 15 seconds. Result? In their words 'it's about the same'

 

You just can't win with some people!

Same here @Sheridan . The small amount pcs we have upgraded are the fastest by a country mile. I was wetting myself when I saw how a core2duo wiped the floor with an i5 but most people have not noticed or just stopped complaining
