Just finished Foundation and wow. Just wow!

The final episode is a masterclass on how to wind up a series and (without giving too much away) has possibly the most evil, callous and calculated monologue ever put on screen. It should win awards just for that scene alone!

Can't wait for the second season.

We have just finished episode three and (for me) it's getting into its stride.

 

 

A young man from London stands in court, accused of murder. Despite the overwhelming evidence against him, he swears he’s innocent. But in the end, all that matters is…Does the jury believe him?

Yep we really loved it. And yeah that scene is genuinely anxiety inducing!

 

Few things we are watching at the moment:

 

Expanse season 6

Only 1 episode so far but liking it a lot and looking forward to seeing it wrap up.

Wheel of time -

I'm not sure how I feel about this. Standing alone it seems to be working pretty well but having read the books really recently to me it is feeling kind of rushed and I'm not 100% on board with some of the changes they have made. A lot of them makes sense and it does stop the story dragging but I feel it is missing a bit of the world and character building.

 

Arcane -

I watch the odd animated show and film here and there. Often even a really good animated show is just "good for an animated show". I wasn't expecting much from an animated show based on a game but wow. The storyline, characters, atmosphere, aesthetic, music, voice acting, and especially the world building are brilliant. Even my Mrs who would normally be "you watching a cartoon again" got into it. Only halfway through but I would definitely recommend.

 

Hawkeye -

Seems to be slated a lot online but we are really enjoying it. I think maybe part of the problem is that it isn't really a big "superhero" show like a lot of the other marvel material is. It's a lot more grounded and maybe "smaller" then the rest. That's kind of what I like about it though. Feels a lot more like Jessica Jones or Daredevil than Loki or Wandavision.

I think they've absolutely nailed the feel of the characters and all the lore they've put in there. Eye of the World is a really hard book to adapt as all but 3 chapters are from Rands POV, and you can't do that on tv. Non-readers I've spoken with seem to think the show is paced well, and I'd tend to agree. Mainly because EoTW is itself awfully paced. The million pages of rand and matt walking to camelyn are almost wholly uneccesary for example. Whilst the ending is rushed and doesn't really fit into the rest of the series (as evidenced by the fact that book two ignores this and set up some months later).

 

Some decisions have surprised me, but overall I think it's a cracking series. I think season two will feel a lot more familiar to book readers as it is better written all round and more conscise in its vision.

 

Have you watched the animated shorts that go along with each episode btw? They really help with the world building and are beautifully made.

That is all very true. I hadn't thought about it before because I kind of went straight from one book to another to another in a short space of time, but yeah, the pacing in EoTW is terrible and the ending did leave me feeling like I had kind of missed something along the way. I had actually put it down to reading it while really tired and not feeling great...

The Wheel of Time I know and love probably didn't come into its own until books 3-5, which is why this first season can be jarring at times.

Book one is Jordan's homage to Tolkien and draws heavly from Middle Earth's influence. The next couple of books maintain the 'chase' narrative from the first, but wth different targets

However, book 3 is also where Jordan starts to build the series into the political fantasy epic readers know it best for. Rafe Judkins (showrunner and huge book fan) is trying to get it to feel more like that from the outset, whilst keeping all the bits that still tell the core story.

I had no idea they existed! Thanks, will go hunt them down and have a look.

They were originally hidden inside the X-Ray view for each episode, but I think Amazon have finally bowed to pressure and added them to the bonus tab on the prime video page for the show.

Almost finished Arcane on Netflix. Based on League of Legends it's a Netflix anime and it, to be quite frank, is amazing.

The story, animation and pacing are all utterly captivating and I can highly recommend it to anyone wanting to watch something quite special.

Yep one of the best things I have watched in quite some time. The only downer being that season 2 is likely to be several years away.

Well Hawkeye didn't manage to make it home before Christmas at Château LeMarchand, but we all enjoyed the show and finished it last night. Felt like an old-school mismatched buddy action movie with less graphic violence and swearing. Edited by LeMarchand

Finally got to the end of The Strain. What started as a reasonably scientific explanation for vampires and vampire law got sillier and sillier (originally a drop of blood could infect you, but people were later using guns at point blank range and swords to dispatch them with no ill effects unless it was necessary for plot reasons) with a lower and lower budget. Still, it made it to the finish line (without most of the cast). At least Gus got something that made a bit of sense to do and Zach, who would have rivalled Joffrey as the most hated kid on TV had more people watched, managed to do something good.

 

Not the worst show ever - I did, eventually, finish all 4 seasons - but if it's on your @must give it a go" list I'd say you can safely cross it off.

This final series was really good, no idea what the kids on the planet was for but I'm sure there will be some sort of spin off... hopefully.

Not sure if you spotted it but right at the end of the credits it goes back to the ring which glows red and shows what looks like the warship being built on the doggy planet :p

Having just finished the last book (Leviathan Falls) in the Expanse series, I understand why they stopped it where they did, but think that introducing Laconia at this late stage was a bit pointless and must have been confusing for anyone not familiar with later storylines. It does point to possible episodes being made in future though I guess.

The time jump for the final books is significant also. It makes sense to leave things where they are for the time being.

 

Stopping here, they get to give the show a good ending and leave the option to tackle the final books in a follow-up series a few years from now. :)
