I started my IT career having to straighten pins to rescue keyboards. If it's anything like the ones I've seen in the past, the rest of the PS/2 connector is still plugged into the back of the PC - you may need a pair of pliers

School I worked at last year - all the desktops in the Science labs had the front USB ports broken - looked like someone had been inserting devices with a hammer damn disgrace - only IT technicians are allowed to use a hammer on a PC! Oh and BTW - school I am at now - ALL PCs have PS2 mouse and keyboard - and there are loads of spares in my room/cupboard!! (I am slowly sneaking USB replacement in)
Oaktech Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 That's what happens when people try and get them lined up to plug in by leaning over the top of the machine and rotating the plug trying to get it in. One of two things happen, either the pins fold up like corn in a crop circle or the metal rips out.

The thing was we were intending to sell them on to raise a bit of cash but couldn't really when 2/3rds of the USB ports were broken. Have never seen a single student laptop with a wrecked USB port though. Blinkin' teachers!

I've seen a teacher do that within 2 weeks to a brand new laptop, and then try to demand a new one because their USB ports didn't work!! All they got was some duct tape to cover the now useless USB holes! I don't mind them still being on computers to be honest, the thing that gets me is when you have the 2 x PS/2 ports on there and only 2 USB ports, if there's a decent number of USB ports too then it's not too bad to have them. I bought a PC a few weeks back that came with only 3 USB ports on the back, had the PS/2 ports and then they supplied wired USB keyboard and mouse I'm looking at you Lenovo! LiamH Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 I normally find the front USB ports get destroyed by staff USB drives, they have them attached to their keys and plug them in with the heavy keys hanging off the end then wonder why their pen drive snaps/USB ports get ruined.

And I don't mean upside down - I mean plug the printer end into the PC socket. The IT Tech and I tried it once with an old dead printer and a broken lead - we could only manage it with a hammer - but she did it 4 times over 2 months. Obviously it broke the USB socket and the lead but she kept doing it
soveryapt Posted June 26, 2015 Author Posted June 26, 2015 Best I had was a class complaining that their interactive screen wasn't working properly. So, after they eventually filled out a job sheet because they always remembered to tell me when I was leaving for the day so I make a rule of not remembering jobs in that situation, I went to have a look. The screen loaded fine, so I grabbed the keyboard (easier than using the on screen keyboard to log in) and tried to log in, but had no response from the keyboard. So I had a look at the ports, someone had forced the USB end of the keyboard into the LAN Port. When I pointed it out they're response was "well we're not the technicians so how should we know which hole it's meant to go into" to which I said "you all know how to plug USB drives in and where they go". Needless to say, I have now labelled ALL the ports on that particular machine so hopefully it won't happen again.
mikeprice Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 Yup seen that - a teacher at one school I was at brought his daughters laptop in - she had rammed the mouse usb cable into the ethernet port (probably several times) and he was asking if it was fixable. He wasn't in the least bit bothered when we said it was bu****ed - after that his little darling had to use wifi - which didn't work in her bedroom - only in the lounge with her parents. Wish I could have seen her face!
