If I set FE0/0 as the inside NAT port, do I assign this a static IP address of say 10.1.0.1, then use that as the default gateway on my Lab network? then leave FE0/1 as DHCP connect that to my home router and let that give it a 192.168 address and assign that as the outside NAT port? or is it better to assign a static 192.168 address to the outside port too before adding the routes in?

Hello I would like to set up a small home lab for testing and learning purposes, mainly in the networking side where I have some skills gaps.I have borrowed a spare Cisco 1811 router and a Cisco managed switch, I also have a spare PC that I will use to host some Windows Server/desktop VMs What I would like, is to have the test environment on 10.x.x.x leave my home network (192.168.x.x) untouched, but still allow the test environment to connect to the internet. I've looked on the net and there seems to be a number of ways to do it using the 1811, so if anyone has a tried and tested method I would appreciate some advise on getting it setup. Thanks!

Well I got one! The move from IOS to Android wasn't too painful. Managed to export contacts from iCloud and import into google contacts with a few clicks. First impressions, Very happy with it. Its fast, the dash charge is excellent from almost flat to fully charged in over an hour. The wooden case is excellent. But..... One massive downer, after 5 days it has a stuck pixel on the screen Thankfully because its within 15 days I'm eligible for Return or Replace service, so I'm replacing it (hopefully for a new one, not recon) So it looks like I'm back to the iPhone for a week or so (got to send it back to Poland) That is one of the big plus points for iPhone. Any issues with it and you can nip into your local store and they will usually replace it there and then.

Hello I was Wondering if it is possible to merge two existing schools Office 365 tennants into one? so all the accounts, email addresses, , mailboxes, other data remain the same but are all together under one account? For example, SchoolA use Office365 SchoolA.org SchoolB also use Office365 SchoolB.org SchoolA and SchoolB come together and join an academy trust. Can A and B be joined so that there is only one admin console to manage, and to make it easier to setup distribution lists and shared calendars. But also keep their email domain separate (so that when creating a new account I can choose SchoolA or schoolB from the dropdown) Hope that ramble makes some sense! Dave

Hello, Has anyone successfully setup Avahi on Linux to get airplay working across multiple VLANs? If so would you mind sharing how you set it up? I have a school wanting to use Airserver to Airplay their iPad to the staff PC to display on screen. But the iPads are on a different VLAN to the staff PCs. I have found some information online that says Avahi can repeat the Bonjour traffic across the VLANS. So far I have installed Linux Mint (latest version) on a spare netbook, installed the Avahi package and enabled the reflector switch. Its the next stage, configuring the VLANs where I am a little unsure as there seems to be a few different methods online. Anyone got a tried and tested method? Thanks Dave

So, well over a year ago I created a GPO to add a scheduled task to the ICT Suite computers to shutdown at 6pm at one of the Primaries I support. Everything was going fine, or so I thought! Yesterday I was asked to just check over the PCs make sure they were working as they had some staff training that evening. Which I did and reported back to the head, she then said "they aren't going to shut down at 5pm like they usually do are they?" I had a look into it and she was right! the scheduled task was running at 5pm everyday. I checked the GPO again to make sure I'd not mistakenly set it to 5, nope GPO said 6pm. I changed the setting on the GPO to 7pm and did a GPupdate on the client and it changed to 6pm! So no matter what time I set it to run on the GPO, when it gets pulled down to the client its an hour early. Time is correct on both DC and client, both on the same time zone. I assume its some issue with daylight savings, but why would it do this? anyone come across it before? Server is 2012r2 clients Windows 7 Cheers Dave

IS your MDM Meraki by any chance? I've had this a few times and its seriously annoying! I have found one of three things usually works; 1. Hard reset the device (Pressing home and lock buttons until the apple logo appears) 2. Re-install missing apps in the dashboard 3. Check the event log of one of the devices, see which app says it has failed because there isn't a license and remove, and re add it. My theory is that sometimes when you choose to install an app in Meraki, the one you choose in the add apps bit, is a slightly different version to the one you've bought managed distribution licenses for, so it thinks its unlicensed and prompts you to log into iTunes to buy it. I tend to now copy the app ID from the system manager > VPP then, search that in the add apps section. This is one of the only points where Lightpeed MDM does it better. with Lightspeed you choose add app, then managed distribution and it gives you a list of what apps you have MD licenses for and you simply hit install, rather than having to search again.

Hello, I'm sure this happens at most schools, but at one particular one I support, the kids seem to enjoy dragging every app into a single folder for some reason. Does anyone know if there is a way to prevent this? either with Configurator 2 or Lightspeed MDM? I've looked and all I can see is to prevent deleting apps. Thanks Dave

Hello, I recently created a new OU structure and moved all pupil accounts into it. I set-up a new default user Group Policy on the new OU. Here is where I am having a problem. If a user logs onto a PC and they already have a local profile. It seems that group policy preferences don't run (I have the detailed status message policy applied and it looks to go direct to preparing desktop) this results in them not getting the pupil shared drive from the new policy. Now if that user logs off and straight back on I can see the policies run and the drive appears! also if a user logs onto a machine they've not used before all works. Anyone know why its not processing the preferences on the new policy straight away? I don't really want to go around clearing the local profiles of all the machines. Thanks!

Yes you will need to use an MDM or Configurator and purchase the apps through the apple VPP. It will then link one of the licenses to a particular device using some sort of unique identifier I'm guessing. I wouldn't be surprised if have to have them set to supervised too.

Try selling them on ebay? even if you only get £10-£15 per drive its a bit of money for the school and its better than them sat taking up room in a cupboard somewhere. See if any local computer repair shops would buy them as spares? Or as others have said pick up some cheap caddys and give them to staff so they can keep their own backups**? **Or more likely save their entire careers worth of work to it with no other backup and then leave it on a bus/drop it/do some other sort of damage to it

I saw a news article I think on the BBC showing the basement area and how they were trying to trace thousands of cables that nobody knew what they did or where they went that alone was going to take probably years. Surely with the age and cost of the building it is simply no longer fit for purpose. I know some will argue that parliament has been there for hundreds or years and that a new location would be wrong and go against traditions, but you've got to draw the line somewhere between tradition and what is now relevant and when its time to move on (do we really still need all of the theatrics of slamming the door in the "black Rods" face then have him bang on the door three times and all that carry on?) this could be a fantastic opportunity to totally modernise politics with a new state of the art building full of modern technologies. Maybe then you will actually get more young people engaged in politics. The old building could be re-purposed into a museum showing the history of politics and be a world wide tourist attraction, the entrance fees would at least then contribute to the future upkeep of the building. On the other hand they could just rent a couple of units down on an industrial estate and stick them in there!
