Duke5A Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 I have officially had it! We're using Symantec End Point 12.1 and it's a total, putrid bloated pig of an application. Installing it on anything is like putting a boat anchor around the systems neck and expecting it to tread water. The final straw was me discovering it eats 10GB of space on my base image. Various cleanup tips from Symantec have been useless. A word of caution to anyone thinking about a Symantec product: don't walk away, run! Whether it is anything in their AV line or even Backup Exec (we ran this pile for years) it's all complete crap. Does anyone have any recommendations for a replacement? I'm interested to see what your opinions are. We recently ditched Backup Exec for Veaam and I couldn't be happier with that decision.

I agree with SEP where I am has also just about had it Kaspersky is where we will be going to all being well part of us has already done this so just us to our side to go now when we get funds approved and the time. Backup Exec I cannot agree on the new release has been very good and much better than past version. 1

Seemed pretty slow at installing too. Then we got the renewal fees through so I started looking for a replacement. In the end we went with Panda Cloud Office Protection Plus, 3 years of this for the price of 1 ear Symantec end point. Key points that helped us decide, besides the price Centralised management from the cloud - Great east to use management portal Real time monitoring Great reporting Antivirus, firewall, anti spam and anti theft protection included Web filtering by category and web browsing monitoring, wherever the user is, not just on site (works as a secondary web content filtering system) Whitelist and blacklists for websites Device control (lock down USB, CD/DVD and more) Cross Platform protection Grouping of users and changing groupings on the fly Installation via distribution tool or remotely via installation URL Remote uninstallation and centralised uninstallation tool This software is as Tony would say Grrrrrreat!!

I don't think you even need to licence System Center, you just lose the central management, so deploy with GPO with a config file for each client/server type 1

mikeprice Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Just installed AVAST for business - the free version - on all desktops here Seems great so far - it has blocked several threats that seemed genuine already And I was in the Head's good books when I told her I didn't need to the money I had put aside for new anti-virus! 2

I had no idea the standalone AV was offered free with that licensing. We have Office and Windows covered under EES, so I'm definitely going to look into this.

CAWJames Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 Rereading my reply, I think I should have expanded with: if you have an agreement with Microsoft, ie licence a desktop with core or enterprise CAL's, you cant go wrong with free... I made the assumption that people would have the education desktop with an EES agreement. Thanks James
Oaktech Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 For sheer ease of everything MS System Center Endpoint Protection... However, I've had better detection and enhanced protection from Eset. Eset is fairly expensive, but I really feel it's worth it.

Also, amongst the ANME members, it's by far the more popular of the 20+ different AV solutions used and nearly 50 of the 360+ members using it... bossman Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 @Edu-IT We have done it manually over a couple of weeks, we had to remove Kaspersky (Which required the removal tool) so one of our technicians was tasked with this duty, he did a very good job and so far it has been very good, as I say it will have a an msi for mass deployment but there is an exe file (Full exe not the lite version) when you sign up so you could deploy using that which I was going to sort but just haven't had the time. The console is very intuitive and the help files are good, if you using Smoothwall there are a couple of things to do which is documented somewhere on here, just search for Avast for business and you should see the thread. It seems very light on bandwidth especially when downloading the updates, it has a notification function which flags up any updates required or if it has stopped any malware/virus through either scan or webshield. Try it for free, nothing to lose Highly recommend

bossman Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 @Edu-IT You pays your money or not in the case of Avast and you makes your choice its that simple, one is free and up on the top with the paid for AV's for us it was an easy choice to make as we have no budget for renewal with Kaspersky.
SteveM555 Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 Been using Sophos for 3 years. Seems good so far, detected lots and had no outbreaks. Also handy with Application Control policies too so we can block certain software if needed.
Wubbalubbadub Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 If just recently purchased a 3 year package for Sophos Cloud. I love it. Installs nicely and takes up so little space. Web interface is great. The only weird but is it likes to base some things on "users" by default so I need to change the views to "device".. Still it's handy if I need to quickly check who's logged onto a certain device!
