I have a car now but my new job is literally down the road (I mean literally max 10 minutes walk), however it is across sites so a car is required to move equipment. I am worried that my car at the moment won't be able to handle the short journeys so though about leasing a little 1.0 litre car and just using that? My car isn't 100% reliable at the moment and has recently started developing a few faults. Just wondered peoples opinions on the subject? Merci!
NB9457 Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 What car have you got now? If you've moving bits literally about a site, either keep running what you have now or buy a cheap half decent car. Depending on what you carry, I wouldn't want to damage a new car. That being said , as much as I despise them, Corsas seem very cheap, like £99 a month.
teejay Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 Skoda have some new promotion running from Friday, might be worth looking at the Skoda Citigo. I've used PCP plans for the last 2 cars, just less hassle and have a fixed monthly cost with no surprises, plus a new car every 3 years ;-)

Basically, over mileage only comes into play if the car is returned to the manufacturer/finance company. This rarely happens as usually the dealer buys the car back rather than the manufacturer/finance company and value the car as is, which is always higher than the manufacturer/finance value. Our last car was 17,000 over limit, weren't bothered at all and no charges.

I have a 10 year old fiesta zetec 1.4 so it drinks fuel and as I say I just don't think it will cope with the short journeys that well. Yer those or Up's or seat Mii or whatever I don't really care about the car just that it won't get damaged doing the short journeys really!

If you damage it no one cares, if it conks out you buy a new one, it won't last that long and you don't have the hassle of selling it. A decent Audi A6 won't cost more than about £3k.
unixman_again Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 I used to do Birmingham to Bristol every day but I had company car and petrol. I live just off the M5 and we were at Aztec West. Door to door was 65-70 mins. Many of the locals were taking 40 mins to get to work.

If your employer requires stuff moved between sites, why are you expected to buy them a car??
Quackers Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 I'd buy a decent second hand diesel people carrier or large saloon. If you damage it no one cares, if it conks out you buy a new one, it won't last that long and you don't have the hassle of selling it. A decent Audi A6 won't cost more than about £3k. Diesels are generally a no no for short journeys as most have DPF's fitted. (Depending on brand some 15 year old ones have got them). Short journeys mean the car never gets hot enough for the DPF to do what ever it needs and they get clogged and give you big bills.

Was having a car (as opposed to a driving licence) a prerequisite for your new job? If not, does the school have a mini bus or similar you could use? If your car is unreliable, you probably need to replace it. If it's running OK, I'd keep using it until it breaks - you'll be doing less damage to a 10 year old car than a new one, at least in terms of cost/depreciation. Also, don't buy a diesel for short runs - that's a sure way to kill them and a small petrol won't be far behind on economy. Selling a 10 year old car and buying something new will not save money even if you're driving a gas guzzler. Of course, if you're in the mood for something shiny and new, that's different:) Edited June 3, 2015 by jmak

That will go on until doomsday. My next car, dead serious. I'm gonna deliberately mis-treat it too (run until cambelt snaps or water pump screams etc) just to see how much jip it'll take! That totally put me off ever leasing a motor! Are there different types of lease? I think he got his from a leasing company but I have seen dealers offering X amount per month then a guaranteed buy back price after 3 years. I am guessing those are the ones to go for?

I've always done it through a dealer rather than a leasing company, had no problems with scratches, scrapes and over mileage. They want your repeat business for your next car so they tend to look after you. Also the manufacturers often do deals like 0% and free servicing which are worth snapping up ;-)

Sheddy ones start around £400, dreamer-quality ones still up to about £1k. For that you get dual airbags and little else but relentless, featureless motoring. Notorious as the most reliable and easy-to-work-on car ever. There are rumour-like reports of some 4efe engines almost clearing 200,000 miles having NEVER been serviced. 1

Not a believer in buying expensive cars as some %!%*!!! always damages mine and the current one is getting to that "a bit too many repairs being needed" stage.
