I've recently (since February) spent my gaming time playing Horizon: Zero Dawn on PC, completing it as much as I can/want to. I've had the game since it launched on PC, but held off on playing it due to performance issues at launch. It's a fantastic game with a rich story and open world, and much better optimised for PC now. I think I've done pretty much everything there is to do, so I'm happy leaving it. I'm really hoping they'll bring Horizon: Forbidden West to PC as well.

So now I need to work out what the next game will be - Snowrunner is occupying my time at the moment, but in terms of story driven games, I have RDR2 and Doom: Eternal in my back pocket...

In this bridge period between big story games (since I don't want to commit to anything massive right now), I've been playing one of my favourite childhood games - Total Annihilation, an old school RTS game. It's 25 years old this year and it somehow still has a small semi-active community of players and modders. I've been installing various mods and it's re-invigorated my love for the game! GOG.com is just an amazing thing.

Total Annihilation is a magnificent game. I used to spend hours and hours playing LAN games with my mates. It was revolutionary for so many reasons.

Admittedly, I've never played against another person, but I still love it. I struggle with and get disappointed at newer RTS games in the same vein (looking at you, Planetary Annihilation) because I'm constantly comparing them back to TA.

EDIT - I also have TA: Kingdoms, which I haven't played in a very long time. I might give that a go soon!

Started on Horizon: Zero Dawn. Was beginning to worry that I was going to be watching a limited interaction visual novel about a toddler for a few hours, but Aloy finally grew up. Might have to fiddle with my TV settings as I can hear people talking (and creatures moving) but having difficulty spotting them!

Kingdoms is a cracker, though it didn't have quote the depth of the original.

For other RTS titles that you might enjoy look at these.

Supreme Commander (the first one, not the second) - It is considered the spiritual successor to TA.

I always end up coming back to Command and Conquer: Generals. The best game in the series as far I'm concerned. It was substantially different to original C&C or Red Alert, with different factions, additional general units depending on your choices. And with the ZeroHour expansion and Shockwave mod installed, there's variety enough to keep you going for days.

I have tried Supreme Commander before, but it was a demo and I don't think I gave it a lot of time. Since it's cheap, I'll grab it - Thanks!

I think I only ever played one C&C game, and I couldn't tell you which one it was...

I played the heck out of TA:Kingdoms back in the day!

Zhon ftw!

I can't remember the factions all that well, but I remember playing one skirmish against AI where I built walls, cannons and trebuchets, and had a dragon that I attacked with. Looking at the wiki, I think that was the Aramon faction?

I think it's been mentioned here already but i've been playing Control. Managed to pick up the bundle with the DLC for a good price a while ago and have gotten around to playing it now. Visuals are stunning especially if you have a good PC and card. Really captivating story, it has you scratching your head at first ( a lot like death stranding) but everything starts coming together. Gameplay is also very good being able to use the force is always fun :D and the weapon you are given is great to use.

Got Control, but haven't started it yet. Started Death Stranding a while back, but couldn't get into it. Didn't like the "social" aspect and found the missions too samey. Didn't get very far into it, maybe around Order 11 (https://www.ign.com/wikis/death-stranding/Order_Number_11:_Resins_Delivery:_Distribution_Center_West_of_Capital_Knot_City_-_How_to_Power_the_Reverse_Trike)? Not hating it, just finding it kinda dull and overly complex. Worth struggling on, or throw it back onto the "when I run out of other games" pile?

Control is ruddy brilliant - certainly when it got an update for full ray tracing.

Brilliant story, great visuals and a caretaker that replies to your inner monologue.

I think definitely worth playing through fully at least once. You're very close to the point where (without spoiling too much) you fight the first big boss and then I found the progression especially in terms of getting around and pace of the story picks up a lot after that. It then becomes less about mindlessly delivering packages and more about the story and about the Death Stranding itself. Granted it is a very long game and can be tedious at points but I really did enjoy it.

Yeah, I was getting bored of delivering parcels. I'll give it another go after I finish Horizon: Zero Dawn - which may take a while!

I'm about half way through the Guardians of the Galaxy game which released a little while ago now and I'm loving every second of it. Doesn't seem to get mentioned or praised that much but I'm having a blast.

The writing of the Guardians is superb, managing to capture the spirit and humour of the movies, without seeming like a blatant copy job. Finding myself preferring this take on the characters over the movie versions - theres something about the style of writing and flowing conversations during gameplay which just works so well. Gameplay, story and graphics are all up to standard but the characters are where its at for this game.

Highly recommend to anyone who is into anything vaguely Marvel - plus its part of Gamepass

Picked up Tunic last week. Lovely little isometric metroidvania with some soulslike mechanics (estus, dodge roll the roly poly, etc), but about half of the typical ability gates are actually just knowledge gates, where you need to know about a certain mechanic and how it interacts with other things, so lots of speedrun potential.

It's an odd little premise, you're literally collecting the video game manual for the very game you're playing (except most of it is written in foreign) and you've got to work out a lot of the hints from the book itself, by looking at the images, or the little doodled-in hints, or recognising characters from one place to another to infer relationship, etc.

Also lots of optional secrets to find, if that's your jam.

Would recommend.

FINALLY got the Platinum on Persona 5: Strikers, that took quite a while....

Decided I should really go through Final Fantasy Type-0 as it's been on the shelf long enough to gain dust on the top.

I'm back to work from 2 weeks of annual leave today, and I spent a lot of it with PlayStation titles that have been ported over to PC recently. I'm a good couple of tens of hours into God of War now, it's exactly my sort of game. Then, on Friday, Spider-Man Remastered released on PC, and I spent most of my weekend playing that - I've been wanting to play it for years but I've never owned a PlayStation. It's fantastic!

Finished Horizon: Zero Dawn, which I really enjoyed. Went back to Death Stranding, but decided to try something else as I staggered away from the terminal. Got Murdered: Soul Suspect for a couple of quid a while ago. It's a bit "on the rails" so far...

I'm about to start the final story mission in God of War on PC and I've been really enjoying it. I do want to get the new Spider-Man port at some point. Next on my list though is probably Stray and Cyberpunk 2077.

I've also been playing the horror survival game The Forest in online coop mode with my girlfriend. It's been enjoyable so far, suriving, hunting, building, exploring, fighting.

I'm gutted Hogwarts Legacy got pushed back but appreciate these things happen. Cannot wait to play it. Open world Harry potter is a dream!
