Do they? I'd assumed they were ground-nesting because of their size. It still looked odd in such a small tree as that.

Yea most Herons nest high up in trees, usually near by each other or indeed in the same tree if it is big enough. Occasionally a pair will nest in reed beds if there are no "suitable" trees near by.

 

We have a number of Herons around us, I'll try and get a picture of their nests at some point, they should be getting them ready by now! :-)

Had a lovely day out on Sunday at RSPB Blacktoft Sands and Fairburn Ings. All sorts of things there - marsh harriers displaying to each other, cettis warbler, heron, avocet, shovellers, geese, pochard, black-tailed godwit in winter and summer plumage and many more beside - all very exciting stuff!

Last week we took the dogs up Scafell, enjoying the views on the way up.

 

Then it got a bit foggy at the top and it followed us all the way down back to Eskdale :(
