Finding 'Ohana (Netflix)

 

 

It's The Goonies with a touch of Indiana Jones (in the case of one of the supporting cast literally) in Hawaii. Entertaining family film if that's what you're in the mood for.

Hercules (2014) - slow to get going, over reliant on big battle scenes. A few minor bits of humour. One innuendo which seemed out of place. Mediocre overall in my view. Kids stayed the course so must have been OK for them, but I think the Percy Jackson movies were more all round entertaining

The Wedding Guest (2018) (Amazon Prime)

 

 

Starts off well, but then can't make up its mind what it wants to be (or maybe that's the point). It could've been a good on-the-run thriller, an action flick, a twisty-turny noir or even a romance but it never commits. Dev's fans may enjoy the fact that he's obviously been hitting the gym as he keeps taking his shirt off.

 

Didn't hate it, but wouldn't particularly recommend it either.

The Lake House (2006) Netflix

 

 

Was looking for a "Valentines" flick and couldn't find anything new we fancied*, so revisited this one.

 

Still good the third time round, though we both couldn't quite work out the timeline(s). When did Kate live in the house? There didn't seem to be enough time (in the film's timeline) for Alex to have moved out before she moved in (and back out to Chicago). Guess we were more swept up in the romance the first two viewings.

 

Amazon's suggestions included "The Grand Tour" (wth???) and a teen Groundhog Day with a trailer that suggested that the girl in the loop was happy to stay there as she was going to die otherwise.

Funnily enough I watched that on Friday as well.

It was slow to do anything, then nothing really happened. Wasn't a bad film - it just didnt grab my attention in anyway. But as I was about 1/2 through I kept on watching.

I do wish they had stopped it when the screen went blank at the end... the last 3 minutes were unnecessary.

In 2028 "Nurse" runs a hospital that caters for crooks. One Wednesday things get very complicated - and violent. One of those low budget but interesting concept movies that you used to find on rental back in the day.

In the Shadow of the Moon (Netflix)

 

In 1988 an ambitious uniformed cop helps track down what seems to be a serial killer with a weird M.O., but the perp is killed falling in front a subway carriage. 9 years later the killings start again.

 

Quite entertaining, and possibly more so if you haven't seen the trailer which pretty much spells out what's going on rather that letting you try to work it out for yourself.

Meditation on US foreign policy hidden in an SF tinged actioner that ultimately chickens out of its convictions.

Trailer is completely misleading, but it's hard to say why without spoilers.

 

An office drone discovers that his reality may not be where he should be. You'll probably work out what's going on fairly swiftly and it's all a bit of a downer. Still, Salma Hayek makes the hottest bag lady you'll ever see.

Yes, it seemed to have promise and also seemed to have a commentary on the ethics of AI and just failed to deliver. Cinematography was good and interesting seeing some places I recognised.

We were talking about this in the office today, American Psycho is an acclaimed film but it seems to be a critics favourite and people latch on to that. It is gorgeously filmed and has its moments but as a film I found it a bit dull and pointless, as did others that had just watched it.

Exactly. Conversely, there are many films that have been savaged by the critics and/or ignored by audiences that I've loved. Some of them have even finally been recognised. Blade Runner, for instance, got decidedly mixed reviews when it was released.

Space Sweepers Netflix

 

New Korean film

Given that everything else, both korean films and series we have watched have been very good, this was SUCH a disappointment. Confused narrative, plot leaps, rubbish acting, the lot!

 

Saw this last night. Whilst I wouldn't recommend it for the reasons above plus the out of place (to those not into the cinema of the Far East) broad humour and the casting (the two main leads looked like they should've been in school - certainly not old enough to be battle-hardened soldiers who'd left the service and turned into embittered no-hopers), there is a central core of something that could've been so much better. Plus it was nice to see something which, while the cast was mainly Korean, had a future with people from France, Russia, Nigeria(?) and other nationalities in it. No prizes for guessing the nationality of the bad guy.

 

Whilst I keep seeing trailers for stuff on Netflix and Prime that interest me as a movie, but not enough to invest 10 hours into when I learn it's a series, this was the opposite: I think it would've been better served as a limited series. The audience would've had more time to get to know the characters (so no literal info-dumps) and the world. It even felt as if it had been hacked down from a longer work as some bits didn't seem to deserve the weight they were given. In fact, I'd be more interested in seeing that than 4 hours worth of Justice League. As it stands, though, not worth 2 hours of your time.

Yes, there are hundreds of films out there and if you have access to many streaming services as well as catch up TV and so on, it is easy to spend a very long time trying to find a film you like the look of. In fact it is easy to run out of time all together

Stage Mother (Netflix)

 

SOMEWHAT NSFW TRAILER.

 

 

Jacki (not Jackie) Weaver stars as a religious Texan woman who inherits a gay/drag bar. Not as fun as the trailer suggests - it's more a slightly melancholic drama with comedy moments - but whilst it's predictable, it is quite heart-warming. It does feature a line that is an early candidate for movie line of the year; unfortunately it's too NSFW to post, so let's just say it's advice to the Lucy Liu character on how to handle a guy who's enquiring as to whether she likes it rough.

Legend directed by Ridley Scott with Tom Cruise on Mubi. It really didn't do anything for me - I guess that's always a danger with 'cult films'. Then, Back to the Future on Sky with the kids - superb, it's still a very entertaining film and the kids liked the humour. It's 35 years old!!!
