Good Sam

 

 

A TV reporter is pulled from the more action-packed jobs she prefers due to her risk taking and told to cover the story of a woman who has been left $100k by an anonymous benefactor. Whilst she is initially unhappy with the assignment, as "Good Sam" makes more donations and seems to be making the city a better place she finds herself determined to find out what is really going on.

 

Nice to see Vicky the Demon from The Good Place (Tiya Sircar) getting a lead role - even if she does appear to have had to bring along some of Vicky's sweaters in some scenes. Unfortunately for her she seems to have been typecast as her next role also saw her as a reporter on the 2020 version of The Fugitive which more unfortunately is/was on Quibi and even more unfortunately gave her character the name Pritti Patel. Anyway, it's a sweet, heart-warming film. You'll work out what's going on well in advance, but it's a pleasant enough watch if you're in the mood for something slight.

I think it's just an age thing, where people of a certain vintage are far more likely to enjoy the original, anti-Dahl ending or otherwise. (That ending is typical of movies though, keeping things "happily ever after" when the original source is usually much darker. Take any Brothers Grimm as a great example or indeed Lord of the Rings)

Borat 2

 

I found it quite amusing, and less uneven than the first. Not a "must see" though hopefully enough people in the US saw it pre-election to make a difference.

 

Not sure how much of it was staged, as it's hard to imagine people putting up with SBC's behaviour or not wondering why there was a cameraman present. Though kudos to the "babysitter" and Jewish ladies if their scenes were real. Maybe I'm getting soft in my old age, but I felt sorry for the Trump fans who took him in to be made objects of ridicule.

Based on a Lovecraft story - was slow going to start with but just got stranger and stranger and what a completely crazy ending

 

Quite enjoyed it though (but I do like odd films)

Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears

 

Sequel to the TV show sees an expanded scope and travel to London and Palestine(though not location filming in either). There is eventually a murder, but the main fun is the Indiana Jones style action. Let down only by some cheap CGI and the inability to fit in big enough roles for the extended cast.

 

Ends on a sequel hook which hopefully won't need the crowdfunding this one did to get before the cameras.

Elona Holmes

Elona, the younger sister of Sherlock and Mycroft is on a quest to solve the sudden disappearance of her mother. Millie Bobbie Brown stars as Elona, with supporting roles from Henry Cavill (as Sherlock), Sam Clafflin (as Mycroft) and Helena Bonham Carter (as Eudoria Holmes).

 

I enjoyed the film, it was fun and had good performances. Though there was on scene that took me out of the film, which was when Elona went to a train station - and they used the Severn Valley Railway in Kidderminster. I've only been there once and it was 40s day I think, though it has stayed with me and was instantly recognisable.

Watched Goodfella's with the partner and daughter, one of my favourite films, I couldn't believe they hadn't see it. Still amazing on my umpteenth watch of it!!

Ginny Weds Sunny

 

 

Ginny doesn't want an arranged marriage, but the guy she loves doesn't love her back. Sunny just wants to marry, and Ginny's mum is the local matchmaker and he has always had a thing for Ginny...

 

Less romcommy than the trailer makes it appear - it's often more of a relationship drama. Obviously, song and dance numbers occur, though these aren't as polished as in most of the Indian films I've seen. Possibly because I'm not immersed in Indian culture, Sunny did come across as a bit of a stalker and his Big Romantic Gesture was timed fairly callously. Also, all the younger people seemed impossibly wealthy and surprisingly Western - there's even a "special cigarette" smoked without it being a big thing in one scene.

 

That said, once we'd got past the somewhat alienating beginning, Mme LeMarchand and I both enjoyed the movie. Main criticism would be the title, as it's kind of a spoiler!

I've just finished my annual cycle of all the Star Wars films in chronological order of story, including the animated Clone Wars (just the film, not the TV series). What used to take a few days now takes almost a fortnight!

Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey

 

Put it on with my 8 yr old daughter, very long, too slow. At least 30 mins too long, seems to of been extended just to fit in some random song and dance routines. Turned it off with about 20 mins to go. Don't bother.
