Bad Boys For Life (Sky Movies)

 

17 years later(!) sequel has Martin Lawrence wanting to retire while Will Smith wants to be a bad boy for life. Unfortunately, if a cartel from south of the border gets its way, his life won't be long...

 

Wasn't expecting that much from this, but it was like putting on a comfy slipper: nothing life-changing, but surprisingly good. Those worried by Michael Bay's absence can rest assured that the new guys are close enough to the "house style" and Bay even makes an on screen cameo.

 

Somewhat surprised by this being the biggest Hollywood box office success of 2020, though I guess opening before lockdowns/lack of competition started helped. Suspect that the Chinese market isn't as unwilling to watch films with Black stars as is made out as Tenet was the second biggest Hollywood film.

 

Worth a look if you enjoyed the other two. They also seem to be hoping for a BBCU as the ending leaves the way open for Bad Men, Bad Boys and Girl, and Bad Bad Boy.

 

OT, and I've been biting my tongue on this but have to say @sonofsanta that some who is now "merely" a millionaire (rather than a billionaire) having given away around $160 million to charitable causes (and AFAIK still pays their taxes) may not hold the same views as many, but can hardly be considered a bad 'un.

Godmothered (Disney+)

 

 

Basically "Enchanted" with a would-be fairy godmother rather than a princess. Could've done with a tighter edit (it's not as snappy as the trailer) but a nice enough family film with a slight twist to the formula at the end that will annoy the MAGA types.

 

Santiago Cabrera (Heroes, Musketeers, Picard) stars as the love interest and is almost unrecognisable. Based on this, he should get a role as a Clark Kent/Superman style superhero with a secret identity - he might be the first one to make you believe that people wouldn't recognise him.

The Dig Netflix

Very atmospheric - the sort of thing the British are very good at. I don't generally like films that portray relatively recent events because the events are fictionalised when we do actually know most of what really happened. The main female lead for example is portrayed as rather a pathetic character when in reality she had travelled the world and served as a nurse. Ralph Fiennes was very very good though

When I read about that first, I considered applying (though not so sure about the content). Then I saw the picture they're using to publicise it and thought "no way". I like being warm.

The Martian. Good, even very good. Kids stayed the course for 2+ hours. Many Oscar nominations, but none won, which is probably about right. For me, it lacked real edge of the seat tension and visually I expected a bit more.

Ocean's Eight (Netflix)

 

Enjoyable female-centric spin on the "Ocean's" formula that I enjoyed whilst viewing, but struggled to remember this morning.

 

Not sure why this sort of thing gets such stick from would-be alpha males on the internet. Surely watching a cast of generally attractive women swanning around should appeal to such manly men than the same with guys?

The Imitation Game - clearly a dramatised version of Turing's life, but still some shocking truths within the film. Excellent watch.

Space Sweepers Netflix

 

New Korean film

Given that everything else, both korean films and series we have watched have been very good, this was SUCH a disappointment. Confused narrative, plot leaps, rubbish acting, the lot!

I've been revisiting my childhood films from the 80's this week. So that's The Last Dragon, Airplane, From Dusk til Dawn, Ghostbusters, Alien, the Blues Brothers and See No Evil, Hear no Evil, plus 1 from the 70's Blazing Saddles. What a fun week it has been.

The Secret Garden (2020) (Sky Movies Recording)

 

Somewhat uninvolving version of the classic novel, slightly updated (for no discernibly good reason) to post WW2. Parts seemed to suggest that some of what was going on was in Mary's head, which was a bit odd for a children's film. The garden itself seemed to be around the size of a small county and certainly took in locations across Wales, Cornwall and parts of the south as well as Yorkshire.

In anticipation for the 16 inches of snow we were forecast in the middle of England known for never getting snow, I watched the Day after Tomorrow the other night. Still enjoyed it despite the inaccuracies that Emmerich is known for

As for the snow? 16 flakes is more accurate.

I have a whole theory on John Wick being a member of the Fae. They're the best urban fantasy movies made in ages (if not ever; not much competition) IMHO.

Have been on a bit of a 80s computing documentary kick this week while I've worked from home. Have watched, and enjoyed:

* Console Wars, about Sega taking on Nintendo in the late 80s/early 90s

* Insert Coin, about Midway's time in the industry

* And finally got round to From Bedrooms to Billions: the Amiga Years, that @Dos_Box gave me on a penstick about four years ago at EDIT. Didn't actually get any work done while this one was on, was too sucked in by everyone's love and enthusiasm

It's The Goonies with a touch of Indiana Jones (in the case of one of the supporting cast literally) in Hawaii. Entertaining family film if that's what you're in the mood for.

Varies, but that's a Netflix Original and I can't say I've noticed those getting released elsewhere. They don't even seem to put them out on disc.

 

I wouldn't swear to the above, though.
