Really good family movie, managed to keep my 5 and 9 yr. olds sat still through it all. Lots of clever jokes for us grown ups too. Netflix seem to do family films really well... not sure about the other stuff they throw out.

Seconding @Simcfc73's recommendation of The Mitchells vs the Machines on Netflix. Done by the same studio that did Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse, but this time they use the tech to create a scrapbook aesthetic rather than comic book. It's an Extremely Online film but in a way that's not leaning on you getting specific references (though there is a feral hogs reference) but more about the way Gen-Z use technology to access the world, including the world in front of them. It's not preachy, it's very funny (Eric and Deborah-5000 are my favourites), Olivia Colman is clearly having the time of her life as the evil AI, it's heartfelt and gorgeous and absolutely up there with anything Pixar have done. It's worth watching even if you've not got kids, tbh.

Yep, after the Jack Ryan series thought this might be great. It was just standard fluff really and not really anything I could get excited about.

 

Into the Wild I watched ages ago after a friend said what a lovely story it was, we were both very outdoorsy so I after reading the the blurb I thought it would be great, inspirational story. Decided to watch it on a grey stormy Sunday afternoon to give me a pickup... That was a bad idea.

At the weekend I watched The Wicker Man (1973) with Edward Woodward and Christopher Lee in it, for the first time ever.

 

Not watched the US remake either, and I don't know if I want to, as the plot of this was very well done in my opinion and I don't feel it would work in a US setting.

Godzilla vs Kong

 

Not as bad as you'd think, though you need to switch your brain off before viewing as it doesn't make a lick of sense (and the "Team Godzilla" subplot could have been cut and not made any difference apart from the audience wondering why Millie Bobby Brown wasn't around). However, if you want to watch a giant CGI ape duke it out with a giant CGI radioactive beam breathing dino and also a , knock yourself out.

Murder on the Home Front (Netflix)

 

Looks like this was a 2-part backdoor pilot from 2013 that never went to series that has since been released as a movie. Think "CSI: The Blitz" and you're pretty close, though for some reason this has added (corpse) boobies, which makes you wonder who those shots were aimed at. We were assuming it would be one of those cosy/nostalgic type things but it was slightly darker than expected, with the eventual reveal being a bit of a surprise in tone. Acting was variable; thank goodness Tamsin Merchant was much better by the time of Carnival Row.

 

Not awful, but not particularly worth a watch either.

Mortal Kombat. Far better than the first couple of attempts, but still not exactly 10/10 material. Properly gory as you'd want to see from that IP. However general characterisation seemed poor, and the excuse for Raiden not to get involved in anything was grating. Kano was the films saving grace.

The Christmas Chronicles: Part 2 (Netflix)

 

The kids from the first film are on holiday at Christmas with their mum, her new fella, and his kid when a naughty elf tricks the girl into being his way to get his revenge on Santa.

 

Didn't get time to watch this at Christmas and was sick of seeing it on the list. Actually a fairly amusing (for this sort of film) sequel, though it does promote Hollywood's blatant Felineophobia and has a touch of The Problem of Susan with the older boy being interested in GURLS, and so not getting into Narnia Santa's Village.

Interesting film spoilt for me by stupid errors: a baby's heatbeat being far too slow, and people going out into what appearted to be the Artic or Antartic without proper face coverings. Also swimming in freezing cold water without consequences it seems
