Not really my cup of tea; it's all quite slight and far too low key.

LeMarchand Posted September 15, 2018 Author Posted September 15, 2018 Momentum Olga Kurylenko stars as a thief with a past that comes in handy when a heist goes wrong and she finds herself pursued by a bunch of ruthless bad guys led by James Purefoy. Somewhat hard to believe even given the standards of the genre. It's nice to see a female-led action film, but it's not the best and some of the early shots make Michael Bay's bottie fetish look tame.
LeMarchand Posted September 16, 2018 Author Posted September 16, 2018 Sky Fighters aka Les Chevaliers du Ciel Basically Top Gun en Francais, though the source material is a comic co-created by one of the Asterix duo that was previously adapted back in the 60s. Members with longer memories may recall https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2ZaeGXYhRY. After a shooting that is made to seem his fault and he refuses to join a shadowy governmental agency in recompense, France's top pilot is cashiered out and banned from flying anything but small prop planes. However he is lured back in for one last mission when it appears that terrorists have infiltrated France's flying service. Not bad, and I'd rather watch Sky Fighters 2 than Top Gun 2 (hated Top Gun), but it really felt like it was an episodic series cut down into a film (apart from the stunning production values). I was also thrown by the perfect French of the "American" pilots and they have finally changed the law in France and it seems as if it is no longer mandatory to have a gratuitous boobie scene in any non-children's film. (There is a gratuitous striptease scene, though). See it if you have a thing for fighter planes, as the plot grinds to a halt for regular flying scenes, but it's only a tolerable time-filler if not.

Shocking ending, even when you know it's coming.
smurfomatic Posted September 20, 2018 Posted September 20, 2018 Hurricane The true story of 303 Squadron, made up of Polish (and Czech) fighter pilots who travelled across Europe after their countries fell to the Nazis and joined the RAF to keep fighting. Great film, showing the tough time these pilots had getting accepted by the British hierarchy, then becoming the most successful squadron in the Battle of Britain, and finally being left out of the victory parade to appease Stalin.

LeMarchand Posted September 20, 2018 Author Posted September 20, 2018 Crazy Rich Asians Rachel Chu's boyfriend Nick invites her to meet his family at a wedding in Singapore, and it's not until they reach the airport she starts to find out that he's rich and not until they reach Singapore does she realise that he's... crazy rich. Obviously she knew he was Asian; she's not blind. Unfortunately for her, pretty much every woman in Singapore has set her sights on Nick - and most of them would be considered a far more suitable match by his family. Quite a sweet romcom, though there's less com than the trailer makes out. It's like a very expensive-looking Hallmark film with a better cast, more laughs, and far more gratuitous shots of men taking their shirts off. Was a bit thrown by the bride-to-be's transformation from a seemingly down-to-earth girl to a shrieking harridan and the subplot with the lovely Gemma Chan didn't make a lot of sense, but I did enjoy the film. As an aside, I was quite surprised that this made it to our local cinema. It's been doing far better than expected in the U.S. but, whilst there is a growing number of non "native looking/speaking" people, our town's very "White". I was even more surprised that they put it on in the main screen. My wife and I formed 50% of the audience.
LeMarchand Posted September 23, 2018 Author Posted September 23, 2018 Final Score It's Die Hard in West Ham's old stadium as hard nut soldier Dave Bautista tries to keep his teenage charge safe while dealing with Easter European terrorists. Quite a lot of fun if you like this sort of thing, the fights are surprisingly brutal and the ability to shoot at the soon-to-be-demolished stadium adds a much-needed sense of realism as it's all quite preposterous. Best bit: When Dave's Asian sidekick is being racially abused by fans as he tries to get them to safety and has to adopt a desperate ploy to shift them.

ICTDirect_Dave Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 Solo: A Star Wars Story I finally caught up to this on Saturday night, and do you know what? I really liked it. Despite a troubled birth, the end product was a decent film that ticked all the boxes en route to filling in large chunks of Han's backstory. They did a great job off Kessel and the Maelstrom, and finally seeing an interpretation of the Maw in a Star Wars film was exciting! Two gripes... I didn't like how he got his surname, it seemed too contrived. And the surprise reveal towards the end, not sure it was necessary. I can't really see how they would take advantage of it in later movies. But still, thoroughly enjoyable

Not sure why there's been such a backlash about it and can only assume that the incels don't like the idea of a female character who isn't meek and mild (they seem to dislike Olivia Munn anyway for some reason). The plot doesn't make a lick of sense, and I managed to miss the main bad human's death, but generally a lot of fun.

I think perhaps something was lost not watching it at the cinema, however if you are wanting to just watch a mindless monster action movie then this will deliver that. I did have a few little things that popped into my mind when I watched it, namely that they reused particular moves/jokes throughout the movie. Which in itself is not a terrible crime, it just felt a little lazy. But then, what do you want for a movie based off of a video game where monsters destroy a city.
