Ghost Stories

I really wanted to like this one - a British film, in the great tradition of things like Tales of the Unexpected.

But I couldnt

Not very scary - other than the "making you jump" sort of scary.

Stories were underwhelming and the twist at the end was...more like a bend really

How to Train Your Dragon 2

 

Great film in its own right and an excellent sequel, if a little sad at times.

 

This, along with 'Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs 2', are my go-to examples of 'Sequels which were actually better than the original films' (well, where the original films were bloody good themselves.)

Yep, agreed on both counts.

 

I'm particularly impressed with the Dragons franchise as they've also done such a good job with the tv series (8 series and four or five shorts) without breaking continuity :)

Oh, really?

I watched a bit of Race to the Edge but I didn't really stick with it. Not to say it was bad, I think I just started bingeing something else and didn't go back to it lol.

I'm a couple of seasons behind now. It's a pleasant enough 20 minutes, but rarely seems essential. The animation once the first couple of seasons pass is noticeably better (though not up to movie standards).

Actually movie news, but as the spin off show has been discussed here recently...

 

Good news for "Dragons" fans - the final part of the trilogy is pencilled in for a March 2019 release.

 

Saw Rampage last night.

 

You don't go to see a film about wild animals mutating to a huge size and chomping down on a city expecting a subtle film with nuanced performances and a socially relevant theme etc etc, so as long as you go in just hoping for a (really) dumb action flick this delivers in spades.

I remember playing Rampage on the Mega Drive.

There's not really much of a screenplay you could adapt that into. I assumed it would just a 'veg out, watch the pretty explosions' type of movie.

I assume it's big nasty monsters start terrorising a city (bonus cliché points if it's New York), humans come in to save the day, make it worse, $MovieStar shows up, does something risky all maverick-like and saves the day?

It's a little more complex than that (but not much). The Rock is ex-Special Forces, ex-Anti Poacher Squad who now works in a zoo and has taught a rare albino gorilla he rescued to sign. EvilCorp (not the name in the film) have been doing genetic experiments on a space station and it all goes wrong, leaving 3 canisters of their formula to crash to Earth. George the gorilla + a wolf + an alligator are mutated into the 3 most well know creatures from the game and summoned to Chicago by a signal at EvilCorp HQ, who want to harvest their DNA. There's also a wronged scientist to provide a hint of romance for The Rock, a team of mercs and a seemingly nasty but ultimately decent shadowy government agent in the mix.

 

But mainly it's about the explosions, gratuitous gun fire and big CGI critters. Who do eventually start climbing up the sides of buildings and punching them.

The Hurricane Heist

 

It's the Fast and the Furious meets Twister.

 

From the director of the first "Fast" film comes a tale of an attempt to rob a U.S. Treasury depot of $600 million during a hurricane. But the crooks hadn't counted on agent Maggie Grace and brothers(!) Toby Kebbel and Ryan Kwanten. Thick-eared action featuring a few British actors + an Aussie putting on various accents (along with a few Yanks). Probably OK after many beers, but even the thunder and lightning outside on Saturday night couldn't make any of it seem remotely feasible.

 

This was one of Sky's attempts at a simultaneous theatrical/Sky release. On the basis of this, I don't think Netflix has anything to worry about.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.

 

Didn't quite hit the atmosphere it was aiming for. It wasn't bad but various bits were telegraphed WAY before they were announced. Lily James is OK but she huffs a lot to show emotion - gets a bit wearing after a while

Avangers - Infinity War

 

Tired this morning after going to see this at 00.01 this morning. Loved the movie, had stayed away from any trailers, spoilers, ANYTHING.

 

Absolutely loved it, some proper laugh out loud moments, great storyline and well, WOW.

A Quiet Place

 

Whilst not quite as great as some of the reviews/raves made out, a tense and effective thriller. Particularly enjoyed the fact that they gave you enough information without resorting to lots of (signed) exposition.

 

Those who've seen the trailer and wondered just how the family cope: some, but not all, of your questions are answered. My theory that they should just move somewhere with lots of natural noise would seem to be a valid one (they even show it's safe in one of my imagined safe havens) but maybe such places with existing habitation don't exist in the area? The kids are all annoying in their various ways - beginning to wonder if I'm in the wrong employment sector! - and I found it a bit hard to believe that no-one thought of a way to combat the creatures before most of the population got gobbled up.

Stalker: 70's Russian SF philosophy film, a decade or so ago something landed on Earth, now that area is off limits, fenced in by the military, people sneak in to find...meaning to their lives mostly.

Avengers: Infinity War

 

Lot's of fun, but looong.

 

No spoilers (maybe when the moratorium is lifted the discussion could move to http://www.edugeek.net/forums/tv-movies/190949-avengers-infinity-war-official-trailer.html?) but:

 

 

  1. If you're planning to go, go as soon as possible. People have been pretty good about spoilers, and I have yet to see the equivalent of "The Life of Jesus: OMG!!! I can't believe they killed him!" (apologies to anyone who didn't know) but I have seen articles on normally sensitive sites along the lines of "The Life of Jesus: What drove Judas to his decision?" - which doesn't say what the decision was, but does suggest that a fateful decision is made by Judas.
  2. Maybe temper your expectations as it would be hard for anything to live up to the hype.
  3. There is a post-credits scene. It is good, but you shouldn't feel you have to stay.

Girls Trip

 

Raunchy comedy following for slightly estranged friends on a blow out in New Orleans. This time it's four middle-aged black ladies. There were some very funny bits, but a lot of it fell flat and it's all very predictable.

Is it wrong that I ended up stewing over poor grammar on the titles for the opening scene?

 

"The enemy have driven the British and French Armies to the sea"

 

Nooooooooooooooo!

 

The enemy HAS! Enemy is a singular noun! Hmph! :mad:
