Yeah, the reviews I've seen say it does the orginal justice, which is fine by me.

I just hope it has a soundtrack to match the first!

It was great. My OH enjoyed it greatly too and she’s not normally into action movies.

 

Soundtrack is definitely as good as the first movie.

I see no one has said they have seen the new Top Gun movie yet. I'm off to see this Thursday with a bunch of freinds who all remember going to the cinema to see this the first film. Then retiring to a pub for some post-movie critique!

 

 

Off to see it this Thursday too! Very excited; it's reviewed really strongly, and I maintain that Top Gun is one of the very best movies of the 80s, with something for everyone. Watched it again at an outdoor screening a couple of years ago--which is to say, not at home, where I assume I know what's going on and only half pay attention, but actually properly engrossed in it--and it is still a brilliant film.

 

Got round to The Batman (2022) last night and that is honestly my favourite Batman film now. So completely nails the atmosphere and mood of Gotham that I could have stayed soaked in it for another three hours. Having the maskless Batman look like The Crow was never not a bit weird but when he was mask on, he was as convincing and engaging a Batman as there's been; the fight scenes were superb, and really reminiscent of Arkham Asylum et al. Three hours is a long run time, but it felt weighty in a way that justified it.

In my case, that's because I have no intention of seeing it! I remember being excited by the advance publicity for the original; I'd loved "The Hunger" and the thought of seeing what Tony Scott would bring to a film that seemed designed to show off aerial combat had be salivating. Alas, IMHO what we got was 40% Top Cruise posing, 30% military/macho posing, 20% training exercises, 5% topless guys and 5% aerial combat. I then got excited by the idea of "Wings of the Apache", which seemed to be going to right those wrongs but turned out to be "Top Gun with helicopters".

 

That said, I think anyone who did like the original will like the sequel.

Found out yesterday the Wings of the Apache (which I enjoyed too) was orginally called 'Fire Birds' in the US!

I saw Top Gun Maverick over the weekend in IMAX and really, really enjoyed it. It really does stand up against the original, with less of the worst things of the original, like the long love scenes, shiny/naked volleyball. There's obviously VFX in the film, but they still did an awful lot as practical effects and stunt flying.

To stay on topic, I will recommend Bobby Robson - More than a Manager, I saw it on Prime Video recently, very good film even if you're a Sunderland fan like me about one of England's best managers.

Finally got around to seeing The Batman last night and now kicking myself for not watching it earlier. Very detective noir and didn't seem like almost three hours of movie.

The limited and contolled use of fight scenes and gadgets (such as they were) made it even more character focussed, and I never thought Robert Pattinson would be able to pull this off, but after his great performance in Tenet, this is making him a favoriet of mine now.

We really should organise some movie nights on Discord for us all to chat whilst watching some new and classic films.

Ben (Jack "The Boys" Quaid) and Alice (Maya Erskine - think Awkwafina's slightly less abrasive, more conventionally attractive cousin from another culture) are sick of being the singles at the weddings they go to and form a deal to be each others plus one. No prizes for guessing what happens around 2/3rds of the way through, 3/4s of the way through, or just in time for the end. Quite a fun romcom with an indie/improv edge. If you only have time for one movie on this theme, I'd suggest Holidate is better but this isn't bad and also has Keiko O'Brien as Alice's mom.

It's a slow burner with, for me, an unsatisfying conclusion.

The Contractor (Amazon Prime)

 

Chris Pine plays a soldier who is forced to take a job as a contractor for an allegedly on the level private military outfit. Things soon take a turn for the worse.

 

I can only assume the ladies of the house, whose choice this was, just saw "CHRIS PINE" and didn't bother to even read the synopsis as it turned out not to be what they were expecting (but exactly what I was expecting). Dull, predictable thriller full of the "hero" (who seems to think shooting a bunch of cops is fine) making loads of dumb decisions.

Message Man's past has consequences for those around him, and he sets out to resolve the issues, reluctantly at first.

 

Routine, but will pass the time if you like this sort of thing.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

 

Kinda hard to give my likes and dislikes for this one without spoilers. I generally enjoyed the film and l loved the trip to a different version of Earth that had a selection of other heroes, and hope that it means we'll see some of them in the main MCU, Did anyone notice what job connected two of those actors, btw? Hated that the villain was someone who had seemingly achieved redemption recently. Also, why did Benedict Wong only get third billing? Worth a look if you're a fan, but not an "essential" watch. The mid-credits scene is OK but don't bother with the end credits scene if you see this at the cinema.

Sorry, but this one didn't do it for me; maybe I just wasn't in the mood. I can see why it's getting so much love, but it left me cold. If you weren't convinced by the trailer, I'd say you might not be enamoured either.
