(Amazon Prime) A young student couple are about to head off to their respective parents for Christmas, but can't bear to be apart and run to each other's trains. Various plot devices mean they have to spend the holiday with each other's parents, but neither of them has been entirely honest with their folks or each other. I feel old: Bruno (from The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas) is now old enough to be the lead in a romcom. This one is sweet enough, but you do need to turn off any sort of need for realism (first question: why do neither of them try to find each other in "their" train?). What is it with Christmas romcoms and trains in this country btw?
Dos_Box Posted December 30, 2022 Posted December 30, 2022 (edited) Went to see Violent Night last night. Very funny, imagine a mash-up of The Santa Clause, Die Hard and Home Alone. Its run is coming to an end and we saw it in a smaller screen, but there were only three empty seats in the place and everyone was laughing out loud and making the appropriate noises whenever an on-screen ouchy occured. I can see this becoming an adult Xmas standard fun film. Go and see it whilst you still can! Edited December 30, 2022 by Dos_Box

Deffo Die Hard and (based on the bits I've seen; never watched the whole film) Home Alone. Not overly familiar with the first named film but I'd add in a touch of Peter Pan. Lots of violent fun and well worth a look if the trailer piqued your interest.
Bedders Posted January 3, 2023 Posted January 3, 2023 Avatar: The Way of Water Absolutely stunning film. I've seen it twice now, both times in 3D, and the effects were as good as the first film. Would highly recommend. However at over 3 hours long it's no easy feat for the bladderly-challenged!

I was going to splurge on the 4DX version and again... wish I has also.. I'm sure I missed out on some of the magic in 2D

LeMarchand Posted January 5, 2023 Author Posted January 5, 2023 Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze (Blu-Ray, but available as VoD) 1975 adaptation of the pulp novels from producer George "War of the Worlds" Pal. I loved this as a kid - to the extent of trying to find some of the books to read - but really should have left it as a memory. Sorry Dad! You were right, it really was a bit poor. The main points of interest were recognising Paul Gleason (the Principal from "The Breakfast Club") as one of The Fabulous Five and an early starring role for Pamela "Princess Ardala" Hensley.
Norphy Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 Saw The Amazing Maurice at the cinema today with my son. Sky continue their run of not making a complete pig’s ear of Terry Pratchett adaptations. In fact, I’d say it’s the best adaptation of his work that I’ve seen so far. Yes, it doesn’t stick to the book exactly but the changes aren’t horrific and the film flows quite well. Absolute stellar cast too. Recommended. 1
Ditto Posted January 8, 2023 Posted January 8, 2023 Moonfall - 6/10 It's exactly what you expect. It's a bad film in the best possible way. I experienced it in 4DX and absolutely loved it. Watched last night with family on Prime. Well described. I had some laugh out loud moments, but I'm not sure I was meant too. Mrs Ditto summed it up when saying "It would have been disappointing if you paid for it! It the right hands, it could have been big hit.

But things are not what they seem. A fun (if long) romp. Worth a look, but the "detecting" does seem to play second fiddle to the fun stuff.

Probably after co-lead Luke "Killjoys" MacFarlane pointed out that he had been The Obstacle in one the previous year. This starts with a long angry rant from writer, co-producer and co-lead Billy Eichner including an anti-romcom spiel. However, after a raunchy start, this soon settles into standard romcom tropes. Very funny, but not one to watch with the easily offended/shocked. Not worth the premium rental but, if the trailer amused, you'll probably enjoy it.

I'd only seen it once before and I recall it didn't gel with me at the time, largely I suspect because it's a Christopher Nolan film and he demands you pay attention. Put it on last night for the first time in 11 years and loved it! Sometimes it takes a while before you appreciate a film for what it is, but I am now kicking myself for not giving it another watch earlier.
LeMarchand Posted January 19, 2023 Author Posted January 19, 2023 Slumberland (Netflix) When she is orphaned and sent to live with her uncle, a young girl finds that her dreams take her to Slumberland, where she may be able to see her father again. This is very loosely based on "Little Nemo in Slumberland", my knowledge of which was limited to it being an old comic strip about a young boy, the creator's name and there being a walking bed (most of this from being featured in an issue of "Sandman"). Apparently the Flip character also features in the strip, but doesn't look like Jason Momoa and has a different "origin story". Not a bad film, but a too frenetic for adults and probably too long and possibly too scary for little 'uns. Still, the young girl shows great promise for her future career and, had this made any impact, the pig could have made a small fortune as merchandise*. *If they had produced one that looked like it rather than the poor copy they released.

But then, I don't tend to like films where the protagonists are mob bosses. Never understood the Godfather/Shawshank wars on IMDb though, having checked, things seem to have settled down now with the latter slightly "ahead" on scores, but way ahead on votes cast.

After a search of Sky movies, Netflix, Amazon and generally, we learnt it's only on Apple TV. Nope, not happening. So I searched for a shortish space based alternative and ... We watched A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon Not at the level of the best Wallace and Gromit movies, but a few good laughs and a cheap 90 minutes of light entertainment. I amazed the kids let me get away with the somewhat tenuous theme-link

My favourite bit of music from the movie is in one of the trailers. Wish they'd release an extended version and not just a lazy "full audio snipped from the trailer" version. On Oscars, Everything Everywhere All at Once is nominated in an amazing 11 categories. Was shocked to learn the below, though (not the qualifier about Merle Oberon): Yeoh’s nomination makes the Malaysian star the first Asian Academy Award best actress nominee (1936 nominee Merle Oberon suppressed her Indian roots) Although I wasn't taken by the movie, I kinda hope it wins in all categories so that they can market it as Everything Everywhere and All the Oscars All at Once.

Sophie dreams of being a fairytale princess while Agatha just wants to not be hated for her alleged witchcraft and ugliness. When Sophie wishes to go to the eponymous school, where princesses, princes and villains learn their craft before becoming stars in their own stories, both girls end up at the school. But things aren't quite as they seem. Very teeny, and fairly watchable but very predictable.
LeMarchand Posted January 30, 2023 Author Posted January 30, 2023 Three Thousand Years of Longing (Rental) Trailer NSFW and really misrepresents the movie, which isn't as "mad" or frenetic as it makes out. A scholar (Tilda Swinton) buys a glass bottle that turns out to contain a genie (Idris Elba). She realises the potential dangers in claiming her three wishes, so he tells her his story. Stunningly shot (though I did keep feeling that that Tarsem Singh would have been even better for the tale, which bears thematic similarities to his "The Fall") but never lives up to the title. It is one of those films that will have you thinking about it afterwards, though, as there are hints that the genie may be telling a different tale, or that maybe something else is going on. On the whole, I'd say wait for it to be free on whatever service you have access to if you want to see it.
