Paddington 2

 

Paddington is sent to jail for a crime he (obviously) didn't commit, and he, the Browns and all his friends both in Windsor Gardens and the new friends he makes in the clink must work to clear his name and catch the real crook.

 

A lovely film; absolutely charming. If you enjoy family films get out and see it. Seemed to go down very well with the rest of the audience; there was one scene that seemed to elicit an "awww..." from just about everyone in the place. Maybe not take the more sensitive little ones, though - we had one burst into tears in our screen when the little bear is marched into the big house.

 

Not just kids! I watched it last night and there was a few adults in tears!

Not great until over half way through when there suddenly seemed to be a bit of coherence. Having the main villain as CGI didnt help either

Very funny, and very rude. Not as funny as the first, and definitely lacking in a proper story, but if you enjoyed the first one you should enjoy this.

 

Guys: you may find you are pretty much the only male in the cinema, though.

The Great Wall

 

Matt Damon and Pedro Pascal play a couple of adventurers trying to get their hands on gunpowder in ancient China. They eventually wind up on the eponymous wall which was apparently built to keep out a race of violent lizard creatures. Luckily Matt is such a great warrior that he can help the locals defeat the enemy. A lovely looking film, but I struggled to stay awake, drifting off at times (the LeMarchand ladies didn't last long at all). I'm presuming Matt Damon was doing an Irish(?) accent as America hadn't been founded, but historical accuracy wasn't one of the film's strong points!

 

If you want to watch a beautiful looking Chinese films, pick another. At least this one doesn't have the tragic ending that most similar Chinese movies I've seen go for, I suppose.

Incendies, mystery/thriller, 2010, from the director of Blade Runner 2049. A mother dies and leaves instructions to her children to seek out members of their family, also told in flashback to her life in a fictional middle east country torn apart by ethnic cleansing.

 

I liked it, some felt the ending undermined the message.

I too watched (parts of) The Great Wall the other night. Awful plot, average CGI, possibly terrible middle bit (thankfully fell asleep) and a predictable massive battle that good wins but at a cost ending...

I actually saw SAW Jigsaw in the movies. The movie itself was ok but gotta say that there are way better horror movies out there.

Yeah but the SAW franchise isn't really horror in the traditional sense. I'd consider them more thriller rather than horror.

Valerian, just don't. Lead actor is immensely annoying, couldn't actually finish watching, shame because they clearly had a huge CGI budget, all looked slick just terrible story and acting.

Agree about Dane de Haan, but otherwise it wasn't that bad. Apparently they didn't have the money for the CGI as its poor Box Office performance has all but bankrupt producers EuropaCorp.

LipGate was completely overblown; the only time I was sure the moustache had been brushed out was in the opening shot (probably not the best place for it). The complaints about "bare midriffed" Amazons were similarly overstated - only the ones whose job seemed to be standing around waiting to swing a massive hammer if disaster ever struck had bare tums, presumably to allow better movement.

 

That said, I wouldn't recommend a trip to the cinema - wait for VOD or a free cable showing if it interests you.

DC Just don't seem to be hitting the same level of quality that Marvel enjoy, which is a shame really.

Tokyo Story: Post WWII japan, parents travel from the countryside to Tokyo to visit their children, who are mostly way too busy/mean to look after them. The daughter in law of their dead son is the one who's nicest. After a while they travel back, things happen, the children go to visit the parents.

 

Shot with almost entirely static cameras, placed at head height if you're sitting on the floor, no pans, no tilts, no zooms. Very slow, supposed to help you remember how to sit still and appreciate things, but I'm too far gone for that. Not as bad as my friends who watched it at 2x speed though.

 

Once the final act begins it gets more interesting, but the first 2 thirds? Too slow for me.

What Happened To Monday?

 

After civilization nearly crashes due to overpopulation/climate change a new technique manages to partially revive failing crops, but has a side effect of increased fertility and multiple births in humans. A "one child" law is enacted and siblings are removed from their families to be kept in cryo until the world's food shortage can be solved.

 

When his daughter dies in childbirth after giving birth to girl septuplets, Terrence Settman hits on a cunning plan: each girl will be named after a day of the week and on "her" day will get to live outside their apartment as Karen Settman. Things work, with Karen eventually getting a well paid job in a bank. But then Monday goes missing...

 

For some reason I was expecting this to be more of a mystery, but it's actually a tense (and bloody) action film. Generally enjoyable, but the food/overpopulation crisis didn't feel "real" (most people looked reasonably well-fed and there were large and empty apartments) and once again the "population control" advocates had to go OTT and start killing people willy-nilly (cf. Utopia).

Better Watch Out

 

Christmas horror/comedy fusion. Classic home invasion film executed very well in my opinion. Interesting plot turn. I was expecting more comedy/jokes before hand, but having watched it, now feel they got the right amount in. Worth a watch.

No Mortal Engines, when I just saw Ep 8 at Imax 3d Odeon, Ready Player 1, Maze Runner, Lara Croft and Black Panther trailers.

 

I love Star Wars, even Ep1, but this one I dunno, bits I loved, the action, the humour, nods to old films, but certain just didn't sit right, had me head scratching and I think stopped my enjoyment to a certain extent

I saw Star Wars Ep 8 yesterday, and I really enjoyed it. There was one big plot hole, but I'm not sure if I missed something or not. I might have to see it again to check.

 

On the whole, it was very good in my opinion, and different too!
