Love Never Dies (2012)

 

Not actually that bad although some bits of it are a bit weird. It picks up 10 years after the end of The Phantom of the Opera after He has moved to New York

As it's a musical there is quite a lot of singing, all of it performed really quite well, but as with every film I watched recently there were a few niggles

1. Christine sings so high that sometimes I struggled to make out the words

2. Meg reminded me too much of Mel from Doctor Who - only missing the ginger hair (technically bonnie langford but i don't think i've ever seen her in anything else so they remain one and the same person in my mind)

3. The Phantom of the Opera song doesn't get a look in except for one, occasionally repeated, line.

 

The boy's performance was really quite good but hearing a 10 year old boy singing like that kept making me think of the film "The Snowman" and I've had "Walking in the Air" running around my brain all weekend now.

 

Overall I quite enjoyed it but I suspect I'd have enjoyed it more seeing it live in the West End (the dvd release is just an edited recording of a performance in melbourne)

I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives In The House

We watched this after reading a lot of positive reviews. It stars (the wonderful) Ruth Wilson as a nurse who moves in to an isolated house to look after an old lady. But the house has a history...

So, the idea behind this movie to work solely with atmosphere and tension. Which, to be fair, it does well. However, nothing, and I mean nothing, happens. Nothing! A movie cannot live on atmosphere alone!

 

There are lots of (beautiful) shots of Ruth Wilson drifting around the house (the film really is beautifully framed) while she wastes her talents. We learn nothing about the characters and there's no story to speak of.

 

mrs_sparkeh and I were both hovering over the off button on the remote but as we like to see a film through we waited and endured an hour and a half of moody drifting. Unfortunately mrs_sparkeh fell asleep just before the end when the only real event of the film happened. However, I envied her as she missed a real let down and will forever be better off for it.

 

Despite the positive reviews from critics I urge you not to waste your time on this film.

Ender's Game

 

Been a while since I read the book, and this seemed reasonably faithful (though I though there were a lot more "training encounters" against the enemy in the book). Some of it seemed filched from one of the sequels. Was the only one in the house to stay awake...

Like Stars On Earth, Indian film about a kid with undiagnosed dyslexia. Quite fun, somewhat simplistic/overly sweet. Interesting to hear English and Hindi mixed together so much.

One of those films where half way through I picked up my phone and started browsing the net. Torture scene is pretty rough, but that's about it. 5/10

really enjoyed the film and jaw dropping towards the end. going to have to read the book again to see if there are any diffrences 9/10 (to get a 10 it has to beat the lego movie in awsomeness)

I was going to see the new Star Trek film, then realised it was already out.

 

Horrible movie, all action and still boring.

 

Inferno looks good, can't wait for it to be released on home media.

Yesterday I watched a good old classic, John Wayne in "The Horse Soldiers". The ending has always bugged me about this film; as they escape across the bridge leaving the duke as the last man across to light the demolition fuze, then dramatically riding across it just as it explodes. Question is why on earth didn't they just set the fuze on the other side of the bridge? Obviously dramatic effect won over the film directors common sense!!!

I felt sorry for Kate Winslet too.

 

Just watched Dr. Strange - the 1978 TV movie, which was way worse than I remember. My teenage self was probably distracted my Jessica Walter's Morgan LeFay, one of the first "evil lady" crushes I had. Only of interest to lovers of 70's pr0n moustaches. Possibly students of film scores may find some interest in the odd range here; it's all over the place - piano porn, pimp funk and even some John Carpenter-esque synths. Oh, and former Mrs Michael Crichton Anne-Marie Martin is love interest. Was obviously a pilot for a never-made series.

Loved the first 2 Pee-wee Herman films but found this recent effort a bit grating. Possibly one of those things that should have stayed in the 80s.

Having confirmed that Chris Pratt's character does what I thought he did, I'm waiting for this on Sky movies.

 

Rewatched: The Last Boy Scout (not as great as I remembered, but still fun), The Legend of Tarzan (still great) and Shoot 'Em Up (forgot how much mad fun this was).
