Though that's pretty artificial, they would receive Windows 10 when they bought a new PC anyway, it reads as if you have to trade in the non-genuine device for a new device and they take some of the licensing cost of windows off the top.

Anyone who buys a new PC tends to get Windows for free/cheap as chips anyway, if they're buying pre-built.

Yeah, my point was it's nothing new, so Microsoft touting it as a 'very attractive' offer is a bit silly. I'm wager most pirates, if for no other reason than the offer doesn't apply to them, pirate windows because they don't buy pre-built. Which I admit does miff me off. I'm an IT professional, I can (and do) build my own machines. Why am I being 'punished' (in a manner of speaking) with a £100 price tag for that, when someone with no PC knowledge who buys a PC gets an OS for near-free? But eh, bellyaching won't solve anything. It is what it is.

Toshiba will build a Cortana button into its Windows 10 laptops

 

Cortana will be one of the major features to come to Windows 10, and at least one PC vendor plans to treat her especially well. Toshiba's Windows 10 laptops will feature a dedicated Cortana button, for launching Microsoft's digital assistant from your keyboard.

 

The Cortana key will be on all of Toshiba's Windows 10 PCs—“across the board, top to bottom,” according to Jeff Barney, the general manager and vice president in charge of Toshiba America’s PC business. The key will sit in the upper left area, near the function keys, he said. Triggering it will launch Cortana, Microsoft’s digital assistant.

I'd rather laptop keyboards be improved, not made worse by further 'squeezing' or removal of other keys..

The 'correct' thing to do (IMHO) would be to have cortana be triggered by push and hold on the 'windows' key. Upper left is not a useful place for something I want easy access to, and the Windows key is something we should already be used to using for quick access to search.

Sensible idea, holding the key doesn't have a current equivalent so wouldn't be too confusing for users and fairly easy to "market" as the OS runs through the OOBE phase

I was thinking the same. I'd suggest double-tap the windows key or something.

WIN + C? In Windows 8 it opens the charms bar, but that's been removed in Windows 10 so they could just repurpose the shortcut.

Toshiba has chosen the F1 key for Cortana.

Not sure if this has been answered just yet, but does anyone know if the EDU version of Windows 10 will come with bitlocker?

I would assume so. From what I understand, the educational version is supposed to have features in addition to the Enterprise edition rather than being a gimped version of Enterprise

Upcoming changes to Windows 10 Insider Preview builds

 

If you don’t have your Microsoft Account (MSA) connected to your PC, starting in the next build you’ll start seeing notifications asking you to do so. You’ll need to connect the MSA that you registered for the Windows Insider Program with (and accepted the “Microsoft Windows Insider Program Agreement”) in order to continue receiving new Windows 10 Insider Preview builds (both Fast and Slow rings) from Windows Update. If you already have your MSA connected to your account on your PC, then you’re all set. We’re introducing new infrastructure in Windows Update to help us deliver new builds more effectively to Windows Insiders, and ensure that we’re flighting builds to people who have registered and opted in to the program. Connecting your MSA also allows seamless access to Windows Insider-only functionality in the Windows Feedback app and Insider Hub too.

 

This change is for the Windows Insider Program ONLY, and is specific to how we’re delivering the Insider Preview builds. Once available on July 29th, you do not need an MSA to upgrade Windows 10 on your Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 PCs if they are not receiving Insider Preview builds. You will not be required to use an MSA on new PCs that come with Windows 10 preinstalled or clean installed from media. Some features in Windows 10 do require an MSA to use, such as downloading apps in the Windows Store.

 

Getting the final release on 29th July

Windows Insiders running the Windows 10 Insider Preview (Home and Pro editions) with their registered MSA connected to their PC will receive the final release build of Windows 10 starting on 29th July. This will come as just another flight. I’ve gotten a lot of questions from Windows Insiders about how this will work if they clean installed from ISO. As long as you are running an Insider Preview build and connected with the MSA you used to register, you will receive the Windows 10 final release build and remain activated. Once you have successfully installed this build and activated, you will also be able to clean install on that PC from final media if you want to start over fresh.

That's pretty good of them to do it that way.

 

Now I've got more thing to test with it: if I connect my MSA can I still sign in with the picture password rather than text, because I don't know what the text password is for my MSA thanks to keepass. I'll try it later today and let people know in case anyone else has a similar situation.
