JRowley Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Beta builds aren't the same as release clients though, they are supposed to be rough and ready so they can throw features into it and get feedback quickly, then refine the code in the release client. I find it's pretty rare that you see the results of those refinements put back into the beta.

But 3 months before release of 7 & 8 the only problems I was having were "niggles" rather than "I can't even update".

True, but that was a very different approach to development, they had very few changes to make to the design and feature set so you were being pushed effectively release clients/preview builds.

Well yeah of course, I'm just saying that what you are experiencing isn't representative of the final product, this is more or less a true beta not the preview builds they have released previously.
gshaw Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 I ended up ditching it on my laptop and returning to 8.1. It's a shame because as an OS I think it's great, they've hit just the right balance between "traditional" Windows and "modern" Windows, although I still feel Start Menu is a bit clunky; there's minimalist design then almost total lack of visual hints; the latter makes for an unpleasant UI experience. Interestingly I feel the opposite, Win10 seems to feel like a compromise that doesn't really hit the spot in either camp of hardcore desktop Win7 users or Win8.1 tablet users, the UI still doesn't seem "there" as if Microsoft keep throwing ideas out there and hoping one sticks. Haven't particularly wanted to go back to my Win10 test machine after using it nor feeling inclined to upgrade my Surface Pro 3 (although may do it temporarily just to get the free license then see how it goes)

I understand your point, but not fixing major problems from previous builds seems a bad move, as does not releasing ISOs for each build. Interestingly I feel the opposite, Win10 seems to feel like a compromise that doesn't really hit the spot in either camp of hardcore desktop Win7 users or Win8.1 tablet users, the UI still doesn't seem "there" as if Microsoft keep throwing ideas out there and hoping one sticks. I find the UI a bit of a kludge, too.
JRowley Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 My expectation would be that in the final or two month before release they will produce a release client and let people play with that, that release client will be an amalgamation of all the fixes they have developed during the beta period and be a lot closer to the finished product than what some of us are struggling with currently.

Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 10061 now available Today we are releasing a new Technical Preview build for PCs – 10061. This build will be available to the Fast ring, and will be delivered via Windows Update. You can wait for your PCs normal installation time for Windows Updates and it will install automatically, or you can go to Settings > Update & security > Windows Updates and click the “Check for updates” button. If you’re in the Slow ring, we made the decision not to push 10049 out to you because of the bug with long upgrade times caused by installing all Language Packs. We’ll evaluate how 10061 goes in the Fast ring before deciding whether to push it out to Slow as well. The Language Pack issue is a good example of our approach to the Fast/Slow rings for the Windows Insider Program, and why we have two rings. For Fast ring Insiders who installed 10049, we recommend that you follow these steps to reclaim storage space from the extra Language Pack installs. Here are some known issues for this build We know this one will be a bit painful but there is a bug with this build in which Win32 (desktop) apps won’t launch from the Start menu. The workaround is to use search to find and launch these apps and pin them to your taskbar for quick access. The Windows Store Beta (grey tile) and Project Spartan get unpinned after upgrading. You can re-pin them to your Taskbar from All apps on your Start menu. The version of the Mail and Calendar apps included in this build (17.4008.42281.0) have a known issue that causes every typed letter to appear twice. Which might be funny if it weren’t so irritating. We have fixed this issue with updated versions of the apps (17.4016.42291.0) available in the Windows Store Beta (grey tile). If you don’t open the Mail and Calendar apps within the first 15 minutes after logging in to your device for the first time after upgrading and your device is connected to the Internet, the apps should update automatically. You can also go into the Store Beta and check for updates manually at any time. Cortana will highlight things it will be able to help users with, but some of these features are not yet implemented and we are working to deliver them soon. There is a known issue where you might see a black screen with only your mouse cursor during login/logout. We have a fix for this coming via WU. Downloading music in the Xbox Music and Music Preview apps is currently broken. We also have a fix for this coming via WU. When you minimize an app playing audio, it may stop playing once its minimized. In Project Spartan, no selection highlight appears when selecting text in the address box. You can right click in the address box to cut/copy/paste and it will work as expected. We also have a fix for this coming via WU. Magnifier does not work when you put it into docked mode. We will also have a fix for this coming via WU. 1

Download PSTools Run the following as an Administrator, which should launch powershell as the system user. psexec -i -s Powershell.exe Check for updates etc and start them downloading, before they fail run the following in the Powershell window you opened as the system user Get-BitsTransfer | Set-BitsTransfer -ProxyUsage Override -ProxyList proxy1:port -ProxyBypass ";site1;site2,etc." Replacing the proxy1:port bit with you own details. Seems to be a bit inconsistent and I sometimes have to try it a few times before it works but it allowed me to download updates earlier in the week and download build 10061 this morning. Sorry if its already been posted. 1

timbo343 Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Does anyone know a fix for the "Updating windows - do not turn off your machne" startup message which will sit there for literally days - turn off the machine and then it says "Cannot update windows - rolling back" which again will sit there for days. I think something broke my windows 10 installation.
