Congrats mate!

It's an eye opener and no mistake (to steal a phrase from a slightly tubby hobbit!).

My advice. Start buying nappies, baby wipes and essentials now as the little un will go through them like they're going out of fashion.

If you've lots of friends and family, clothes and blankets and stuff should take care of themselves :)

Congratulations. You can now look forward to things like sleep and disposable income being officially things of the past and possible, distant future. ;-)

Congratulations!

Echoing @ICTDirect_Dave, buy as many of the essentials as possible now. We bought copious amounts of baby wipes and nappies (loads of size 1's and 2's), signed up for all the offers available from Bounty, Boots, Cow & Gate etc, and received loads of goodies throughout the pregnancy.

You're about to embark on THE best journey you could imagine, albeit will spend much of it in a zombie-like state of sleepiness.

Enjoy, and get as much rest as possible now!

That's the other thing. I soon learned to store loads of ebooks on my phone and iPad. Sometimes they'll only sleep on you and if you're not near the tv remote you'll need something to do without moving and potentially waking the beast ;)

Congratulations! :)

My baby turns 18 next week and is nearly as tall as you. Enjoy him/her while they are young and you can still look them in the eye... though if yours end up taller than you there will be some serious doorway modification needed :D

Congratulations Luke, its life changing and awesome parenthood, little man is 13 months here and started walking this week, hes also been chattering away pretty much non-stop for the last 4 months.

+1 for kiddicare, they are excellent, also be prepared for things like "Mother and Baby" events that happen quite regularly with the supermarkets, some decent discounting goes on there when those event's go live.

Congrats!

Don't be afraid to take second-hand offerings - and don't buy too many size 1 clothes as it is amazing how fast they grow out of those initial mini-sized clothes. Let's face it, your baby might be very very long! :)

Enjoy it - I would love to go back and do it all again. Mind you, my eldest has just bought a house with his girlfriend of nearly 8 years - maybe I won't have to wait too long to be a granny!

Agreed. Neither of mine fitted clothes or nappies for newborns in the first place. Let people give give you those. Invest in the bigger sizes!

I taught myself to juggle when we had our second one after I relaised just how much time I spent awake at 1, 3 and 5am. I thought I may as well do something useful with the time!

Congratulations Luke :) Your life is about to change in a way you cannot possibly understand yet!

Anyway, my advice:

  1. As others have said, stock up on essentials you can't ever have enough!
  2. Don't think the more expensive nappies/wipes are best. We found Tescos were better and many people I know used Aldi's and other 'own brand' nappies. You are going to spend a lot of money on them so be warned
  3. Buy a decent pram with an integral car seat if you can, but if you cant set it up or collapse it in 5 seconds then don't bother with it. You first 'getting-baby-in-car-and-pram-in-boot-in-downpour' experience will show you why. Also try and get one you can fit 2 bags of shopping underneath and forget about trying to sell it on after you have finished with it. It will be trashed
  4. Your clothes (all of them) will be puked on if you hold the baby and there is nothing you will be able to do about this. Be warned
  5. Lot's of baby things you buy will never be used. Beware of fads
  6. As Witch said, accept second hand clothes and acessories if offered. You child will be in them for such a short amount of time it's not worth the outlay
  7. Do not buy £40 designer baby trainers. It's a waste of £40
  8. Or designer anything. babies look cute enough without them and they grow FAST!
  9. The first 6 months are the worst, you start to get your sleep back after that, unless you are lucky and have a baby that will sleep well quite early on
  10. Oh, and nothing, I repeat nothing will prepare you for the second your wife goes into labour. You will run around like a headless chicken :)

I think that's about it..oh hang one, one more:

  1. See if anyone can give you old baby magazines. They repeat the contents every 9 months ;)

...and you will feel really guilty - and so you should!! :)

Congratulations!

It's a great journey. But expect consequences in all areas of your life!

For example, when it happened for me, I ended up losing one of these:

And getting one of these:

And eventually when it became two, one of these:

I still wouldn't change it for the world though!

It's worth looking at Amazon Subscribe and Save for Nappies and Wipes once you find ones you are happy with and get into the swing of how many you're using. The regular deliveries are convenient and the saving worthwhile.

Above all, enjoy!

Being a dad is epic, and great fun. You have a real chance to make yourself proud. For example the day you go to their school plays or the day you take them to their first sports match, or the day they say dada, or learn to walk...its all good!!

Congratulations :) it'll be the best thing you'll ever do, and I feel confident saying that despite having no idea at all about any of your life achievements to date. My two boys are 20 months and 5 months now, and if you want to know just how quickly babies grow through their clothes - the younger of those two is wearing 12-18 month size clothes now.

Get a TENS machine for the labour. I have no idea if it really works or not (though my missus swore by it, and got through both those births with no other pain relief (scared of the epidural and gas and air makes her feel sick, not because she's some sort of martyr!)) but the important thing is that it gives you, as a man, a button to push. When your missus is incomprehensible amounts of pain and can't control her screaming and doesn't even seem to recognise you, having something to do with your hands, and feeling like you're making some sort of contribution (minor as it is), is invaluable.
