Anyone else on here run assemblies?

Im looking for music suggestions.

I want to take the kids(and teachers) out of their comfort zone and play them something a bit different.

any suggestions (it needs to be safe of course)

Personally I always think this is the ideal opportunity to play classical music. It's 100% safe and for many kids, it will be the only time they have to sit and listen to classical. Familiarity may well lead them to like the music and consider listening to more.

I still remember we had Holst's Planets suite as our going-in music for assembly when I was at primary school, and the teacher started assembly by reminding us which planet we were listening to, and what the meaning of the music was.

Why take them out of their comfort zone? Why not play the extensive repertoire of classical film music that they will recognise and perhaps begin to understand that classical doesn't mean uncool or boring?

Our music teacher always asks if the children like classical music - and when they all say "nah" - he plays them something like the music from Harry Potter or Pirates of the Caribbean.

He also plays film clips with and without the backing music to show how music can be used to set mood.

If you really want weird music, how about Schoenberg, or Morton Feldman

go for the classic ones, like M-people/heather small, and even enya-orinoco flow

What about John Cage? No, not 4'33" before anyone says it, but some of his other music that has been really influential on electronic dance music. Would be a good eye opener.

I really like classical mixed with modern music, so

(Sounds like plain ol' classical at first but stick with it. Music nerd fact: this song is written in 7/4 time rather than 4/4 like most electronic music)

Aphex Twin - Girl/Boy Song (Probably a bit too 'electronic' for people who have no taste in music, the drum complexity in this track is mindblowing)

(Sort of like Jungle/DnB meets classical)

I think kids nowadays have this opinion that all classical music is terrible and old, so maybe these songs will help them realise that it's not at all.

...or Pierre Boulez or Elliot Carter.

Personally, I'd go for something like Olivier Messiaen's 'Quartet for the End of Time'. Great background story (written and first performed in a WWII POW camp with the instruments available) and you can get the children to listen out for different birdsongs.
