Microsoft releases massive Slow Boot / Slow Login Hotfix Rollup (KB2775511)

A massive Slow Boot Slow Login (SBSL) hotfix rollup for enterprises that includes 90 post Windows 7/2008 R2 hotfixes is available for download. The hotfixes focus on performance (Hooray!) and stability (Hooray again!). There are improvements to the DFSN client, Folder Redirection, Offline Files and Folders, WMI, and SMB client to name a few. There also improvements to Group Policy which gets blamed for pretty much everything when I'm doing a WDRAP. You can read the full list of improvements here.

 

"To take full advantage of this improvement for Windows 7 clients that log on to Windows Server 2008 R2 servers, install this rollup update on Windows 7 clients. Additionally, install this rollup update on the Windows Server 2008 R2 servers that clients authenticate and retrieve user profiles, policies and script data from during the startup and logon process. You can update your environment by installing this hotfix rollup on both clients and servers in no particular order."

 

This hotfix rollup includes the following improvements:

 

• Improves the Windows Client Remote File System components. These components include the following:
   
  
  • Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV)
    
  • DFSN client
    
  • Folder Redirection
    
  • Offline Files and Folders (CSC)
    
  • SMB client
    
  • Redirected Drive Buffering Subsystem (RDB)
    
  • Multiple UNC Provider (MUP)
    

   

  [*]Improves the SMB Service and TCP protocol components. These improvements work together with other improvements to help improve the overall networking performance on Windows 7 SP1-based and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1-based computers.

There are a couple caveats around roaming profiles and some other issues, regkeys and so forth, so test it. But most customers should see a minute or more reduced from boot, and a more peppy system, as a result. (Source)

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh for christ sake, i just rebuilt an image yesterday!!!!!!!! >_< And I've just deployed 4 of these fabled hotfixes to all the PCs in the school because i was hit with the slow boot issue. *BANGS HEAD AGAINST WALL*

 

EDIT: oh and just to really make it feel like it's rubbing it in.....the KB Article ID is the same as one of my IDs here at work! WHAT THE ****!

I must admit, I had probs importing the updates into WSUS. I tried an hour later and it worked correctly. It could be Microsoft's servers are being hammered by Edugeekers tut tut

This needs to be a 'sticky'.

 

I note that unlike most Update Rollups and before them Service Packs, almost all the included component updates move machines over to the LDR branch. I think MS has scared people in the past with dire warning about 'only apply if affected by the issue' and this is the first formal step I have seen that indicates the new world order of patch early patch often.

 

Update Rollups are the future.

Roaming Profiles don't work well with wired 802.1x if you transition between machine and user authentication.

I've not done this before, but here's what I did.

Remote into server, open up WSUS.

Click on the root of the Updates branch, then in the Actions pane on the far right, click "Import Updates..." which takes you to the catalog site.

On the site, I searched for "KB2775511", then clicked Add for the ones I wanted (just the Windows 7 one, in my case).

Then click "View basket" at the top and click "Import"

They then downloaded and imported straight into WSUS

You can't, you need 'special' RM updates.

In regards to the SMB Service and TCP protocol components, does anyone know if this addresses the SMB performance issues of using a W2k3 file server with Win7 clients?

This is what I did too. Just remember the updates you download may/may not need manually approving depending on your WSUS configuration as they're classed as an Update Rollup.

 

I've now set this to deploy and haven't noticed any problems as yet. Question still remains whether or not it'll improve logon speeds further....

You can also import Internet Explorer 10 using the WSUS import method for Win 7 and 2008 R2, but they're something like 140MB (x86) and 190MB (x64). Can't see me deploying them this way, but at least you can Approve or Decline it once it's in your WSUS database

word of warning.. i applied this update this weekend and has definalty made things better, whilst i havent seen a increase in logon speeds ( they are fast anyway) i have noticed certain settings that never seemed to apply properly have suddenly started to work so very happy.

 

now the warning is if you use mandatory profiles be aware i had to edit mine and rename it to dat log on and log off then copy it back to the server because when logging in as a pupil with mandatory profile the login would hang at Applying personalised settings... for windows desktop update.

 

So just be aware you may have to modify your mandatory profiles after applying this update.

I tried the import method above, but in the catalog site I dont have an Import option, just a download button which prompts me for a local folder to save them to. How do I get them into Windows Update?

Did you install the ActiveX control for the Update Catalog website? Do you see the 'Import directly...' check box shown below?
