dany2010 Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Hi, About a year ago I sold my little rover metro and brought a fabia vrs, although the speed is ok on the vrs the fun just isn't there for me and I'm now bored. I think it's because of two things. One is, it's diesel so I miss the revs and second i find your forever watching it making sure no one scratches it, worrying about the alloys etc. Thinking I would like to go back to a older car as they seem Left heavy but not sure which. Looking at the Peugeot 106 gti which is supposed to be a fun little car. Any other ideas. Thread might sound a bit racer but I've never stuck a big exhaust on or made any mods. Just looking for fun.

If you are bored, keep it and use the money to get it mapped. assuming its not that different from the tdi sport pd130 ibiza i had (as its the same car underneath not unreasonable) in a straight line it was fine but it diddnt do corners it was the worst car ive owned for that even the old works rover 111i was more fun to drive

I agree with the Zetec S. I have the MK6.5 .. very nice car, cost me £3000. Fun to drive, quite pokey, fuel I get on average about 35 - 41MPG Clio 172 Cup Also a very nice car!

Some top suggestions thanks Will take a look when I get back in. Thinks its between the 106 and the Clio 175 at the min. Other tech at work has the Mazda and it just drinks fuel. andrew_91090 Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 I can vouch for the Peugeot 106 GTI, fantastic little cars, very light and good (ish) on petrol, Same with the Ford Puma, as a 1.7l, it's quite quick for a small car and is low, so good for handling May even be able to get a (old) VW Golf GTI, best thing about these is there are the most reliable cars EVER! but whatever you do, STAY AWAY FROM FIAT (Fix It Again Tomorrow) I have one for 6 months and ended up spending about £2.5k fixing it up and I wouldn't knock diesels just yet, most now have turbo's in and ALOT more efficient.

Dont bother with the Fiesta ST they are thirsty yet not all that powerful, my mates £400 1993 polo with a few mods was quicker (bike carbs and different head) Not much over £2k can get you an Cooper-S which has buckets of power and crazy supercharger noise. All for this price range will be terrible on fuel, the focus TDCI 115 + remap is fun and around 140bhp plus handles loads better then a Fabia

Looked into getting a BMW when i was looking last time, came to the conclusion that they are lovely cars but i would have to park it about a mile away from home as there is so little space round our way. Focus's are supposed to be brill cars but (sorry to offend any owners) they look terrible. Guy next door to us has a st (in the only colour it should be, orange), i just dont like the back of it. Golf gti is another option i will take a look at. The only issue im having with the older cars is finding a unmolested one. Think my plan of action is to get the fabia paid of (few months) and take them all out. Theres a nie 2002 106gti on auto trader at the min
SHimmer45 Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 my other half has recently purchased a mk1 1.6 focus edge 3 door and it drives VERY well sticks to the road nice and level when pushing it no real body roll or wobble so an ST must be great fun. and i have seen them for sub 3k in good nick and not molested as they have decent wheels anyway. I know it might be considered a girly car but have you thought about a BMW E36/46 compact? RWD goodness still i think

I did really enjoy the mk6.5 ZS TDCI it was lowered 30mm on eibachs so it had no body roll and handled amazing but resulted in a very harsh ride.

Norphy Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 I had a mk1 Focus built in 2003. It drove OK but the interior and general build quality of the thing was awful. The doors sounded like they were made out of tin, the plastics felt cheap, the seats were uncomfortable and were made out of a horrible shiny fabric. The tailgate rattled unless you put electrical tape around the locking pin. The external door trim strips kept on coming off. It was unexpectedly thirsty for a 1.6l car. Plus the radio was rubbish! I don't think the look of the car has dated particularly well either. I stuck with it for about six months then bought a 2001 Golf. Hand on heart, the drive isn't quite as good (not that there's an awful lot in it) but overall the car is a much nicer place to be when you're driving for upwards of two hours a day. More comfortable, velour seats. More solid construction. Much better brakes. Quieter too. Even things like the switchgear feel more solid. So, um, yeah, not really helpful I suppose
