Turning Dell Laptops into simple bootable web browsers
Sonic007 replied to Sonic007's topic in How do you do....it?
Thought I'd update this thread with what I've done with my Dell 3190 laptops. Didnt want to pay to get them onto a Chrome managed system and as we just wanted them to be web browser machines then I have used Proteus Kiosk. Porteus Kiosk - free and open source kiosk software for web terminals. This has let me lock it down as a sort of kiosk so nothing gets saved and can customise it well. Boots straight to Chrome web browser and that is all they get access too. Students can then use the web to access their homework platforms etc. -
Thanks for this, but I've now found a sollution that is free and works for me. All I needed was web terminals for my users so Porteus has solved this. It's like a Kiosk system so easy to customise too so users cant change anything.

So I've just finished testing Porteus Kiosk and it is great. No need for licensing and it boots straight into Google Chrome. Have been able to customise it too. Perfect for what I need.

These are student only laptops and all go through our filtered Internet connection. I've found a version of Porteus that creates locked down kiosk style machines so going to trial that today.

I can see it makes sense to buy the licenses but as I basically need just web browser machines I think I’m going to try Porteus Linux install. The plan is to use the dell laptops we got handed to us during the pandemic. Unfortunately we got the slow hard drive ones and generally low spec so Windows just crumbles.

Thankyou. Do you have to buy licenses? We use GSuite free for eucation and wondered if there was a free version?

Hi all, We are beginning bto have more Chrome OS devices and wonderd how best to manage them. The school is currently using GSuite. What is the best way of getting all my Chromebooks setup, limit options, user restrictions, etc so that it can be panned out to all Chrome OS laptops? Thankyou.

Same as you.... Renewal in January. I cant work out how Im going ot be able to afford double what I'm currently paying. Might have to start buying candles and lighting a fire if it keeps getting this bad!
-
I currently pay £114 dual fuel per month and my renewal is coming out at nearly £220 per month! Way out my budget! Really going to have to do some digging to try and get a cheaper deal.

I've always found facilities to be good to me in I.T. and once they know what to do and not do then they actually help by making sure all is well. Teachers on the other hand, I wouldnt let them near it. It will become a junk yard for all left over crap from their classrooms.

Talk Straight - Issues
Sonic007 replied to Alastairb25's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Been a customer for about 6 months now and very happy. Whenever we've had an issue tech support have been on it and resolved it. -
A few practical tasks, for example disable the ethernet/wifi adapter and ask them to sort it out, ask to troubleshoot why no signal on the monitor, ask them to check why no internet access, etc. A couple of priority questions thrown in too, who to go to first, how quick something needs doing before the lesson gets disrupted, SLT not being able to print, etc.

Thankyoufor your help Paddy, It is very appreciataed. I've checked Mac of routers gateway and going to wait for it to go down again to compare. Just checked the ping -a on our gateway and it doesnt show any other machine listed, just the IP so hopefully that rules that one out. It is definately a pain to be diagnosing thats for sure! It doesnt help when staff are putting on the pressure too and coming out with things like "well when I'm at home i just reboot the router. Have you tried that". Oh my! Happy Monday to me!
