I can get it to work on W7 for user desktops, just not the pre-logon wallpaper (backgroundDefault.jpg). BGinfo (as far as I know) only creates Bitmap files and not JPEGs. So, the only thing I can think of at the moment is some way of stamping the PC Hostname onto the backgroundDefault.jpg Andrew

Does anyone know an easy way to stamp the PC hostname to the Windows 7 backgroundDefault.jpg image? We are using Bginfo via Group Policy for stamping user desktops, but that doesn't work for the pre-logon desktop image as far as I can see. Anyone got, or know of, a script that will write the hostname to the backgroundDefault.jpg image? (maybe using ImageMagick or similar) Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Cheers_ Andrew

Tried GPO and that didn't work at all on our WinXP clients. It was ok on the Win7 machines. We haven't fully gone over to Win7 yet and I need it to work on XP for a little while longer. The GPP does map the printers, it just seems to affect other unexpected stuff as well! A

We have server 2008R2 domain controllers and WinXP desktops. I've just deployed a couple of printers to a room using GPPs. The printers map correctly and work fine. However, users are reporting that the WinXP 'My Documents' link no longer works and gives an error message about lack of permission. The users can go into 'My Computer' and click on their home folder, but the 'My Documents' links has stopped working. I removed the policy containing the printer GPPs and hey presto 'My Documents' link works again...strange! Has anyone experienced this behaviour (or similar) or know of a fix? Cheers_ Andrew

I've worked at this school for about a year now and we have the (very loud) server cabs in our office. I have noticed a definite affect on my hearing. I really need to go and have a hearing test, but I fear they may say I need a hearing aid! It may just be coincidence that my hearing is not as good as it was, but I am not so sure.... Andrew

Just a quick question to you all... How many of you work in an office which doubles as your server room? If you do, is it very noisy from the servers? Our office has the servers in it, 12 of them, and various switches and the noise level is quite high. I am used to the constant background drone, but I think it may be damaging my hearing and possibly the hearing of my colleagues. Any thoughts people? Andrew

Yes, personally, I think they should. Rather than just doing death by Powerpoint or 'bouncing ball' flash animations, I think they should learn the basics of how a PC/Laptop/Tablet work. The only problem I can see would be the teachers keeping up to date with changes in technology which, if I am honest, they don't seem very good at doing now and they only seem to teach very low-level stuff! Ok, fair enough. We will give it a another try in IE9 and see what we get. The PC it was running on wasn't affected by Group Policies and it still looked strange, but I will try it on another machine with IE9 installed. I will post my findings here later today if it looks any different. Thanks for your help. Andrew

It works fairly well and is simple, but I would always test by deploying to a few PCs or a single room first before deploying network-wide. I have had a faulty MSI in the past which caused untold problems and we had to re-image a few classrooms of PCs because it broke stuff! Andrew

We've been using LIV@EDU for the best part of this year and in general we think its really good. It does have some Pros and Cons: Pros: Its FREE and fairly easy to set up Its hosted 'in the cloud' so is available via a web browser from anywhere It has a lot of similar features to full Outlook/OWA Its easy for users to get to grips with and to do basic stuff like adding folders, auto-replys etc. It cuts down on in-house administration and backup worries You can use lots of Powershell scripts to change stuff Cons: The Microsoft support is fairly slow/rubbish Its quite hard to integrate with AD or other on-site servers It does seem to struggle when receiving emails from some senders who use email filtering (small number) It doesn't work very well with IE9 and the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader In the main we are very happy with it and when compared to the rubbish Fronter email system this school was using, its a million times better Andrew
