Advice about setting up Live@EDU
adhutton replied to steve_nfi's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Apologies if this has been asked before, but I wondered if anyone can tell me if the Windows Live Messenger part of Live@edu can be turned off or restricted (for students)? Andrew -
We are considering buying Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 Server Edition. I would like to see it in action first and believe there is an evaluation copy available. However, the download link for the eval copy on Symantec's web site is dead and I can't seem to get a copy anywhere. Does anyone have an evaluation copy they could let me have or know of a site where I can download one? Thanks - Andrew

Our school purchased 4 new Optoma (EX-531-EDU Projector, 5yr Hardwar, 3yr Lamp) projectors in September. Two of the four have already failed! - they get lots of specks on the image first, the colours go strange and then the unit refuses to work! Just wondered if anyone else has had any problems with this model or have we maybe got a bad batch? Andrew

Yes, Darren and I have fixed it: "Phew. I've fixed it. I got the mdl_courses table and went through it looking for differences and found something like restrict modules was set to 1 in new courses. Changing this to 0 fixed everything! I found the setting in admin and changed it back to 'no courses'. It turns out somebody was trying to restrict access to the chat module but either selected everything or nothing. Hope this helps anybody searching in the future. " Read more: Using Moodle: New Courses Broken - Teachers Can't Add Activities Or Resources Thanks to everyone for your help. Andrew

This is strange. Over the last few days we have noticed that teachers cannot add resources or activities to newly created courses. They do not see the 2 drop down boxes at the bottom of each section. They do see these drop downs in courses that were created previously Admins are unaffected. Other teacher editing rights within a course are uneffected. Nothing has changed recently on the Moodle server. Moodle 1.9.9+ (Build: 20100707) Thanks

reapplying user security to already made folders

Try this - it may do what you want - http://www.wisesoft.co.uk/software/ntfsfix/default.aspx We have used it before and it works well. Andrew -
I suppose it depends on the 'Terms & Conditions' which are applied to the use of such data in your school. This kind of thing exists on Facebook and elsewhere, so I would think that as long as you have the permission of those involved then you shouldn't have any problems. Andrew

We used Wisesoft Bulk AD Users (http://www.wisesoft.co.uk/software/bulkadusers/default.aspx) to export the Y9 emails into a text file and then imported them into Mass Mail. Bit of a clart on, but it worked. A

We use Parentmail (http://www.parentmail.co.uk) for this, but if you can't afford that or don't want to sign-up we have also used Mass Mail (MassMail BETA Version - KGP Software) which is free/cheap. Andrew

I would be interested to see that as well please. We have subsequently gone with Moodle and it is being very well received by staff and students. Andrew

I've had several broadband suppliers over the last few years and have found Sky BB to be the best, most stable by far. Never had any problems with any of my Sky/Sky+/HD boxes either. Maybe I have just been lucky? Andrew

Just Google for the trailer. We found it on various trailer sites including the IMDB. Not sure about YouTube - haven't checked yet, but will do that now. A

It has come to our attention that some of our students have been accessing/watching a trailer for the Serbian Film. You may want to ensure that all access to the film and its trailer are totally blocked on your network! It is well nasty. It is basically torture porn and from the small bit of the trailer I watched it has turned my stomach. Apparently it is fast becoming a 'cult' movie for the kids to watch and has been widely discussed on Facebook etc. You have been warned! Andrew

ACS:Law Boss: I Feel Defeated And Could Go Bankrupt.

I agree. He deserves everything he gets. My heart bleeds for him....NOT! A -
Sorry, but I have to disagree with you on this one. I have 3 children and my wife and I both work full time and are on modest incomes - nowhere near the £45k a year. We get only £10 per week Child Tax Credit and would find it quite hard to lose the Child Benefit money. Do you have any kids? Do you know how expensive they are? Have you seen the price of food, shoes, clothes etc. these days? Andrew

Some projectors turn themselves off when the filters get full or if they start to get too hot due to dust build up. Once you have cleaned the filters try resetting the filter warnings via the projector menu and then re-start. Andrew

Did you find a solution to this issue? We have the same problem. Thanks - Andrew

Did a Windows 7 course at Washington (Tyne & Wear) with them which was ok. Seemed a bit rushed for the amount of info. involved and the manual we received was a bit lacking, but not the worst training I have ever been to. I would suggest buying the books and doing some home study as well. Andrew

I think we've had this problem..... If I remember right you need to log-in on each PC as an Administrator, run the software and extrude the shapes. Then it will work for other (non-Administrator) users. Hope this helps? Andrew

We have a teacher with a weird printing problem. Each time he sends a document to a network printer (any type of document, any printer) he gets multiple copies out of the printer. For example he might want to print 5 copies of a Word document, but when it prints he gets 55 copies! It is almost as if the amount he is selecting is being increased by that number again. For example 6 copies become 66, 7 - 77 and so on.... I had thought this might be simple user error, but I have observed him on two or three PCs and printers and the same thing happens each time. We have checked his AD account, checked the printers, print server etc. and no indication of any problems. I am at a loss as to why this might be happening. Any ideas chaps? Are we missing something really obvious? We are on a MS Windows 2003 domain and use PCounter as our printing management software. Any/all suggestions welcomed. Andrew

iPhone 4 Sound problem...anyone had this?
adhutton replied to adhutton's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
She has a bit of a history of dropping/breaking/losing/destroying her phones, but on this occasion I think it is probably a hardware/software fault. Not terribly impressed with the iPhone4 so far..... A
