  1. Out of interest, is there anything obscure if you run ipconfig /all after waking up from sleep? Since I clean installed RC Win7 onto my laptop, every it reboots/boots it adds a default gateway of 0.0.0.0 - this gives me internal access, but the internets do not work... I get around by deleting the route and ipconfig /renew
  2. Where are you setting the defaults? Properties > Advanced > Printing Defaults?
  3. hehe... for those who don't like the new SuperBar, you can enable labels for all the icons when they're active - which is what I do. It still functions the same as without, just it tells you with words the title of the application as well as the crazy icon.
  4. From a personal PoV I had no issues with Vista whatsoever... when I ran it at work, it was horrifically slow browsing network shares (which was the main killer), it didn't run some bits of software properly. Haven't tried SP2 on Vista though.
  5. Are the permissions on the share correct? I have a test student account which loads the default profile etc, but doesn't apply any of the lockdown settings so I can emulate a student, but also have the ability to get to areas I need - in this case, I would see if I could manually map the drive as a student. My VB head has floated away the last few days... I've always used the network object to obtain the computer name and username should I be that way inclined, but I suspect it doesn't really make any difference.
  6. It's possible. If you're using the Group Policy Management Console, you can run a results wizard and obtain an overview of all the policies that were last applied when x user logged on - it'll let you choose a remote PC and enumerate the users cached on that PC to run the results against. You can also use the modelling wizard to see if changes you make will apply. You can also see then which policy object applied the restriction as well. It's a very useful tool
  7. Grab the delprof utility from the Microsoft site > Download details: User Profile Deletion Utility (Delprof.exe) Run it using the switch /r /i /q (roaming only, ignore errors and don't ask for prompt) See if the kids can log on then... We've got the same issue here but it's very rare occurence and this has always fixed it for us, we had it during SP2 though as well. We run delprof at shutdown in the evening and again at every boot and the problem is not very common anymore.
  8. If it helps anyone... I've solved the issue for our site now using hard-coded site paths and names. I created 3 sites in Dreamweaver as Administrator, took the Registry keys out. They're in HKCU\Software\Adobe\Common\9\Sites\ Each site has it's own Key and you can tweak settings if you need to. All the paths point to their \Dreamweaver\Site (which is created at logon if it doesn't exist) I inserted these into the ntuser.man file and then popped it back into the profile. When Dreamweaver is opened, it defaults to one of the sites and rebuilds the site cache from the source folder, if you select a different site from the site navigator, it'll rebuild the cache for that one too. We've just ran it in 4 lessons and the staff so far are very happy with the solution.
  9. The Adobe CS3 suite isn't "annoying" (I'd say), but the deployment is very picky unless you're gifted with System Managment Server. Once you do get the deployment going though it's pretty solid.
  10. We've ran Premiere Pro CS3 on laptops with 1.6 celeron's + 512mb RAM for the most part for staff and they haven't complained too much, in the process of bumping them all up to 1gb RAM and that seems to cut through stuff pretty well. It probably more depends on what you're going to do with the project, we've had project's that iMac's have struggled with in the past, handily they're not that common.
  11. Premiere opens most things... The PureDigital site implies that you can use the software that comes with the camera's to convert the video's from MPEG-4/AVI to WMV/MOV. We've got some JVC camera's which originally we had to use the Cyberlink software to convert the video's to another format before we could use them outside the CyberLink software. But we wroked out after a while we could batch rename the files to something else and it worked
  12. Word save's Auto Recovery files every so often (assuming they haven't been disabled) They usually reside within the %APPDATA% folder somewhere. You might have luck flicking through the Office button, or asking the mighty google where they're saved.
  13. Turn on Displaying scripts I can't remember where the option is without looking... Computer > Administrative Templates > System > Scripts I think that's the correct path (you can also set the maximum wait time in the same branch) There should be an option which when Enabled, shows the prompt window and what the script is currently up-to. if nothing happens, you might have to add a pause in so you can see..... Not 100% sure but, can delprof even be run from a network location? I rolled it out through a batch file to the C:\ drive of all the PC's and run it from there....
  14. Haha, my bad
  15. Same place as it is in Windows 2000 onwards. Device Management > NIC Properties
  16. If you wanted to, you could rule out Auto-Negotiation on managed switches. I suspect that me not having any speed issues whatsoever with Win7 is because most of our Admin PC's are all forced to 100mb/1gb FD at the Switch (HP) and client.
  17. Some are in Local Settings, the bulk and the key parts are in the registry. I know how to automate the backup and restore of the site at logon/logoff... I'm just not 100% comfortable with enabling students access to registry keys (for the moment anyway) I did wonder whether it can be something that is added to the ntuser.man for everyone and everyone uses the same default site paths etc for their websites - which would also solve the problem... In fact, I might go try the latter now and see what happens!
  18. As defeatist as it is, have you tried it without the offline file & folder caching enabled? (made a huge speed difference in Vista)
  19. have you tried SUPER? SUPER .
  20. We've used RM's version The Basement which is slightly more expensive, but does work for all students (and parents of students) who in primary/secondary education.
  21. If the start menu is something you don't like, there's a regkey change you can make to convert the "Favourites" area into a fake XP style extending program list which worked quite well I believe when I tried it out. I like the new taskbar and start menu though, it's much neater than Vista's (don't know why) and it's a damn sight easier to use especially for kids who a clever enough to use the quick find option than use all programs. The run command still exists... you can use the shortcut or just add it back in the same way you would add/remove it in XP. In my experience, staff complain whatever you do, so you either provide a machine where they can just play with it, provide resources on how it differs etc, or just leave them on XP (you could tell them to suck it up and deal with it if you're feeling brave...)
  22. nope, I have a Skype phone which doesn't work natively... Then again, it didn't work in Vista either. What you could try (which works with my skype phone) is find the driver it calls and replace the Win7 driver with the "working" one and it should get you around the problem... You'll need to take control of the folders obviously and add yourself to the security tree, but should be good.
  23. Did it work within XP Mode? I tried, but I couldn't get it to install, I suspect I need the administrator password, but I'm not sure what it is...
  24. I get 3.4 at work, up from 2.0 in the beta (using the same drivers too...)
  25. I tend to spend quite a while and just filter the audio... I leave the pages up so people can browse the pages - I'm very evil, I do the same on game websites, I tend to try as hard as possible to just filter the actual game
