Please see attached. Help! When students login and choose 'Save as' in Office it correctly defaults to their My Documents on the server but if they click on the down arrow a list of all the laptops and PCs on the network appear. They don't have access but obviously not something we want to happen. Doesn't happen in XP. Server 2003, 64 bit W7 Pro. Many thanks Doc1.doc

Hi - is it possible using folder permissions to have a situation where once students have saved a piece of work to the 'Hand in Homework' folder they can no longer edit the original document - they should be able to go back to the document and read it and, if they wish, resave it under another name but not edit the original once saved in this particular folder. At the moment it's set up like this: Share Permissions - Full Control for Students NTFS Permissions ticked - Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read, Write. I've also ticked Deny Delete Subfolders and files under Advanced XP/2003 and the folder is mapped to each workstation using a simple net use etc script. The above is working fine apart from the students can alter the original still. Many thanks

Hi One of our staff's USB pen drive has broke (USB bit has snapped off) - can anyone recommend a data recovery company that might be able to help with this matter. I know there's plenty out there I just wondered if folk here had had a good experience which they could pass on. Or any other suggestions. Cheers

Hi - I don't know Successmaker too well but I've managed to do a fresh install on our new server using the manaul provided by Pearson and that seemed to have gone very well. Logged in, created users, so far so good but when we went to assign courses the window is empty. I logged in as system admin, Window > Show SM Courses > SM Course window is empty so, of course we cannot assign any courses. Can anyone help? Many thanks.

Hi Is it possible to run a REGEDIT /S S:\changeregistryentry.reg command before a user logs in. I usually put things like this in a batch file and make it part of the log in script but on this occasion it's to do with an MSI installation and I need the change to the registry entry making before the MSI kicks in. Many thanks

Morning - we are still experiencing this problem at least 4 or 5 times a week. Any ideas? Thanks

Hi, I'm using the following formula to generate user names in Excel: =LEFT(A1,100) & B1 Forname in A1 and surname in B1 this is producing JoeBloggs: what I want is JoeB. Any ideas how I can amend the formula so it extracts only the first letter of the surname? Thanks

Thanks very much for putting me on the right track. I've moved the page file over to E: and we've a healthy 5Gb free. That'll do for now. Cheers

Hi, I wonder if anyone can explain the following. Our newly installed Server 2008 has a 25Gb partition system drive with only 1.5Gb free. The total size of all the files on the C: drive using Select all and properties is 14.7Gb; where's the other 9Gb gone? Any advice much appreciated.

Hi We have 32 of these laptops and they really are very nice to use and the longer battery life is a real bonus in the classroom situation. However, there is one problem which is driving me mad and occurs on all the laptops. When you go to shutdown, without exception you get the 'This program is not responding' message from explorer.exe, the shutdown procedure then hangs for around a minute, it then finally shuts down. There's nothing in event viewer; anyone any ideas what may be causing this behaviour? Thanks

It's a Atheros AR5007EG, drivers dated 13/02/2009. I've discovered a later one so I'll try that and see how it goes. Thanks

We have a bank of 60 laptops which perform reasonably well on our D-Link managed wireless system. The problem we find is that over the course of a week or two 6 or 7 will lose the tick in the box 'Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings', meaning, of course, they cannot log in. I put the tick back and all is fine. It's not the same laptops which have the problem and there is no 3rd party wireless adapter software on the laptops. Any idea why this may be happening? Can I force this choice through the policy? Laptops are Tosh Satellite Pro L300s and a vanilla XP/2003 network. Thanks.

Regrettably Manchester LEA and Stockport LEA have now unblocked Sparklebox following a brief block on the site after the recent controversy. What's the current situation in your LA?

Hi Server2003/XP I'm trying to run the following two lines in a batch file at the students' logon...... Cacls C:\ /e /g "studentgroup":r net time \\SERVER /set /yes I've stuck it in Netlogon and it runs but come up with an Access is denied error and the net time command says 'A required priviledge in not held by the client'. It works fine for staff. I realise it's a permissions issue in that the students haven't got permissions to alter their priviliges to the local C: drive but I'm not quite sure how to get round it (other than to go round and log in each computer with a staff account!). Many thanks.
