Together at last - OSX and Windows
DrPerceptron replied to Geek_of_HeathMount's topic in General Chat
What about using the MacBook with VMWare Fusion? I do believe it supports full DirectX functionality, not sure whether it's v9 or v10 though... -
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ork2003/HA011402581033.aspx Have a look at what you think of the Outlook Profile Tool. I use it here to setup outlook for staff, but there shouldn't be any reason why you can't use it and the path suggestion mentioned previously to do it - you could come up with a different way, but keep in mind that it will have to be the same for all your users.

File conversion & Office Compatability Pack
DrPerceptron replied to rocknrollstar's topic in Windows
Ahh, OK, it's obviously changed. I guess you will need to get the MSI from the original compatability pack and apply the MSP from the SP2 version to that either at the administrative point or in the GPO (if you can do that using the "upgrade" tab...) -
File conversion & Office Compatability Pack

.exe /extract It'll ask you to confirm, then ask where you want the files. -
yup, just the tick boxes, I assume if you add the $ on the end, it will change the path and everything stops working.. You might be able to solve your problem by denying access to UNC paths in file explorer - not sure how you go about that off the top of my head though.

File conversion & Office Compatability Pack
DrPerceptron replied to rocknrollstar's topic in Windows
Not familiar with FileFormatConverters.exe - first I've heard of it infact. We rolled out the plain Office 2007 compat' pack and didn't have any problems with it. Download details: Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack Service Pack 2 (SP2) That'll get you the full install, let it run through so far and you can nick the whole MSI from a Program Files directory somewhere (not sure which...) I don't remember changing anything in the MSI to deploy it either, just slapped it in a GPO and it was happy. -
I've always used PortQRY. I think it's part of one of the resource kits... but it's available from ms.com too Download details: PortQry Command Line Port Scanner Version 2.0

Everything in our netlogon folder is hidden.... if that helps Doesn't seem to have drawn upon any problems.

Depends on what you want call bulk editing, you can roll a VBS/BAT file out which updates the registry by way of importing a file...

Screen Saver Lockout for Staff - Preventable on certain systems?
DrPerceptron replied to link470's topic in Windows
I think you can just set them back to not set, It's been a long while since I turned a group policy setting off, so can't remember - usually when it's not configured, it acts in its default state.... which is explained in the explanation of the object. Can't say I've experienced the WMP disable of screensavers either, would definately be handy to know about though -
Screen Saver Lockout for Staff - Preventable on certain systems?
DrPerceptron replied to link470's topic in Windows
You can disable it for certain systems, you'll just have to enable Loopback Merge Mode - we used to have the setup here, however we've just gone back to having a blanket lockout. If people don't want the lockout, we offer 15, 30 and 60 minute versions of the lockouts, but ultimately, it will remain. New staff appear to just agree with the system and older staff will know why it's in place - data protection apparently isn't something teachers cared about too much... -
I last created a universal image a while ago, haven't done it since, but there's a lot of info out on the net about it and some good guides on what you need to do - I think there's a comprehensive one somewhere written by a guy or two at Altiris on it (not using ADS either!) jimtsay - MySysprep is a bit of software I definately remember using for HAL purposes.

That's very unfair localzuk.. I've had */settings.aspx filtered for a few days, haven't heard of it having any adverse effects on other websites, but it stops them changing their settings (or at least it stops me...)

WMS will happily stream media over the LAN, it doesn't have to use a webpage to present the stream, though it certainly helps, you should be able to build a set of pages to present the videos in an easy format. I've used WMS here to stream the BBC radio stations and we've also used it during college productions to show the students in the changing areas what's currently going on stage so that they don't miss their cues. We don't use it as much as it should be used though - but that's down to no content to show.

Anyone up for a little challenge? (CSS & PHP)
DrPerceptron replied to Little-Miss's topic in Web Development
minishowcase | community - Sub Folder Updates Is that what you're looking for? It seems you're not the only person looking to do it, there are a few topics dotted over the the forums there about it. -
Does RDP not automagically launch itself in fullscreen mode? I've never used TS though so I don't know if it's any different?

A person with industry experience is a valuable asset - said person should be able to bring the know-how and experience of running a mission critical network 24/7 ( most schools would be happy with 8 - 5 / 5) which I would've thought would be brilliant. Just a shame I'm too lazy to register... evidently Grumbledook, you are the voice of reason if it was to be personified.... I'd say johnbrown is TES' resident vampire...

Does it import if you add it manually? you could try bolting a pause at the end and asking Group Policy to show logon script in process should tell you stuff. I think (not sure, was a while ago) that I had problems with importing stuff into the registry because group policy denied access to it for students, so I had to come up with an alternative solution - I added it to the mandatory profile.

Setting up a trust between servers.
DrPerceptron replied to steve_nfi's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
I do believe if you right click your domains in Active Directory Users and Computers (or Domains and Trusts) you can choose a "Domain Functional Level" from the menu and that should tell you. -
Can't say I've found any issues even with my ATI card, I ran the beta and the RC as my main OS and played plenty of games, mostly ones that were designed back when XP was the business, but they're all still good and happy.

sometimes I amaze myself how stupid I can be...
-
It would appear that for some bizarre reason a few days ago I thought it'd be a brilliant idea to treat users as containers... so that when I click on then, it doesn't open properties - but rather a blank page because they don't contain anything... Does anyone remember where you turn it off and go back to normal mode? I can't find the option

With the exception of the Wii, they're all additional controllers, so I can't really see them doing away with the controller. iRacing is the only racing game I'm aware of that doesn't support a keyboard and wheels have been around for quite a while.

Exchange 2007 Direct File Access
DrPerceptron replied to DrPerceptron's topic in Windows Server 2008
Interesting, could you explain the further how Louis Vuitton handbags go towards solving my issue? I'm quite happy to purchase one should you be able to resolve my issue... -
Now all 3 big-boy conferences are over and there's plenty of stuff floating around the net... time to throw on the boxing gloves. I was genuinely impressed by Natal, the games that were demonstrated I felt were pretty tame, but showed a lot of promise - however, just under an hour ago, I was much more impressed with Sony's implementation - including live tech demo's of FPS, RTS, swordplay, whips (if you will...) and archery... Which one is the superior, I cannot say... but they are both equally eye-opening. Looking forward to ModNation Racers, GT5, GoW3 (duhh...) and obviously some other games that have slipped my immediate grasp... AC2 etc Metroid Prime looked like a lot of fun, looking forward to hopefully one of the new Mario games - yeah, I'm that
