  1. Isn't the Computers "OU" actually a Container - thus can't apply any policies apart from the Default Domain Policy? If you're having slow logons - you could look into Environment Debugging - we've done some here in the last week and sorted out a lot of 30+ minute boot times. ( *shakes fist at WMI* )
  2. Get-Mailbox -OrganizationalUnit "Students" | Set-Mailbox -HiddenFromAddressListsEnabled $true Something like that?
  3. The only way I know is through James Wilcox's "Ease of Access Disabler" - A 3rd party app. What about disabling access to the Control Panel items or does that not work?
  4. We're using managed software here... but we apply the install middle of last period and give staff a week warning of it. To be honest though, I don't think more than a quarter of the laptops our staff have are actually ever used in college gates once they've been issued.
  5. The first barcoded product was a packet of Wrigleys gum wasn't it?
  6. In Office 2007 there's a calculate button onb the Formula tab which has the Calculation options etc - perhaps you need to change it to automatically? If it's fomatted sims data into O2k7 (or 2010) I've never been able to use excel formulaes etc to do anything with the data, I always had to export as unformatted text/csv data.
  7. arrComputers = Array("Computer1","Computer2","Computer3") For Each strComputer In arrComputers Somewhere around the top (line 84?) and then end with a Next around line 320 should do it. Connecting to WMI on a Remote Computer (Windows) I may be mistaken but ou could just deploy using group policy as a startup script and you wouldn't have to worry about names, whether the PC is on currently etc.
  8. I haven't touched it for ages - basically the same reason. We virtualised it... not that that was supported with them... but it was horrendously slow, 4gb of ram... I never did find all the PC's on the domain either... but half of that is our domain has just over 2000 pcs (over a 1000 don't actually exist anymore). I might go back and revisit it at some other time, but I think if you just install the OMCI stuff on clients, you can still use the BIOS settings... not verified that theory though - it's sjust a script so why not?
  9. Couple of questions that I thought I knew the answer to... but apparently I don't 1. I was certain that in Exchange 2007 OWA, when using the Direct Access stuff (document tab) you could "Send As Link" or something along those lines so you could just email a link to your work, rather than the actual document. Does this still exist in SP2? Or did I somehow make up the entire thing? (I'm aware I can copy the link but that is I'm sure, not the feature I used) 2. Can you use Dynamic Distribution Lists in Transport Rules? I set up a transport rule, but it doesn't seem to do anything. 3. How can I prevent sending externally emails as well as recieving externally?... I guess I need to use powershell (but quite frankly, I can't be bothered to learn it for the 5 minutes - pushing it - I'll use it a week)
  10. I can't imagine not having them... then again I came straight out of sixth form, so it's all I know in a school. NB: Doesn't your computer have a clock on it? Or are you like me... always forgetting its there!
  11. It's like looking at a network map of my place... For network performance - make sure the 5406 does all the routing etc etc and is the default gateway. I'd say: 1x DC, your 2x file servers, 1x backup box. Then some form of virtualisation to keep the rest as flexible as you possibly can. You can expand, play and everything else you want without buying new hardware etc. (you'll want 1x physical DC if you go virtualising, it solves a LOT of problems). How you choose your virtualisation is up to you, find out though if 2008 can give you everything ESX/Xenserver can give you. (I only know ESX so I'm not suggesting any)
  12. possibly a stab in the dark (on a really skinny person in a wide alley) but... on a blank profile, setup the google search preferences as you want them and copy the cookies?
  13. Why not go look int the DUP and find out? I found a year or two ago that Group Policy has an option called Verbose Logging... more orientated at Vista's Software Installation policy (how I found it) - not telling you what its actually installing... I've left it turned on ever since (works with 7 and XP) and it makes figuring out minor difficulties a bit easier. You might have some luck with: How to enable user environment debug logging in retail builds of Windows If you haven't looked at either already.
  14. The only thing that makes a noticeable dent in our 32mb line is flash games across site at lunchtimes... How do you cripple a 100mb line? that's got to take quite some doing...
  15. http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/estimation.png
  16. I'm after a DVD, or more accurately ANY copy of a movie - Feathered Fan and Silken Ribbon Well, ok, I'm not but I said I'd look into it - in short, our Drama department are keen on using it for part of their GCSE/A-Level work amongst other things. I can't find any DVD, VHS or copy in any form anywhere If anyone has any ideas, I'd like to hear them... if not, oh well...
  17. Odd, I've just tried it here and it worked fine. You could try using alt+013, see if that gets you anywhere... VBA may possibly be able to search for vbCRLF if you wished to go down that route, but I'm not sure on the fundamentals of such a scheme.
  18. try regsvr32 /u twext.dll I don't understand why you would want to hide it though? the amount of people who can restore their work on their own now through previous versioning made my life bearable.
  19. I went back... had a look, could see them all there... so got annoyed and decided to do the windows updates. Updated it, rebooted and now it works? Solution: Don't have the foggiest, perhaps a reboot is an undocumented step? (yes I did IISRESET)
  20. Ok, so obviously I'm trying to setup my SSL access for OWA and its associated services using a GoDaddy cert. I overcame some minor mishaps to get my cert (had to go through manual verification because automagic didn't work). I've followed the GoDaddy instructions @ Installing an SSL Certificate in Microsoft Exchange Server - GoDaddy Help Center, Search the GoDaddy Knowledge Base I had to repair a cert when I inserted so that I could use the Management Console to assign the cert to the services... but now I have... Untrusted Certificate -> the security certificate was not issued by a trusted authority... NB: If I add the intermediate certificate to the client it works... but that defeats the point of a £40 certificate
  21. What's up with the new "Super" Bar? If it makes you happy, you can display labels against the task bar items... I can't get my head around just icons...
  22. Woody Norris invents amazing things | Video on TED.com That guy patented directional sound in some form and tested it in supermarkets in the states for advertising at checkouts.
  23. I guess I may have a stab at the professional racing driver line... perhaps a mega subscription to iRacing and praying I get picked for some odd virtual-real-life transition... I've got another few years before BSF comes along and I need to consider it... perhaps a more realistic alternative would be a taxi driver... but maybe all that driving would destroy my admiration and enjoyment of driving - especially in the rain.
  24. How do you deal with offsite machines anyway? I was thinking more along the lines of a central (ie: you have it) map etc.. we started to build one here over the summer and it's quite handy.. not that we've used it yet As for laptops, they're individually named to a convention here (based on the owner) so as long as I know who I'm talking to, I can guess the name. Just an idea though, I doubt there's a be-all and end-all solution to anything in a school...
  25. They're not anything out of Adobe or a CAD/CAM package are they? I remember being asked to open an e(xx - can't remember exactly what) file which the internet knew nothing about, but I managed it somehow by finding out what the contents of the file should be and some faffing around.
