Our Virtualised environment has a dedicated box we use for the vCenter/vSphere server... that doubles up as our MDSM machine as well (since it's able to see all the management addresses).

Collins Science problem, running out of ideas!
DrPerceptron replied to samba_man's topic in Educational Software
DAMNIT! I knew I should've opened a ticket for this problem yesterday!! I had exactly the same thing. What I did was download a copy of procmon, fire it up, filter it to the collins application and one of the last things it did was throw a stack buffer overflow. I cannot remember what I did to rectify that problem though I know that procmon pointed me in the correct direction though... I'll have a rummage around the network around and see if I can recall what I actually did to fix it. EDIT: It was a quirk in the Intel graphics driver this particular laptop used (Latitude E5400). Update to the latest Intel provided driver and it was all good. -
Impero on a non domain laptop
DrPerceptron replied to mattianuk's topic in Network and Classroom Management
I believe they're concurrent as every workstation can be a console. I also think workstation licenses are concurrent as we had something like 800/1400 when we switched from XP to Windows 7. -
Does it do the same for local users? Is the file on the network? If it is, what happens if you copy it to the machine?

Impero on a non domain laptop
DrPerceptron replied to mattianuk's topic in Network and Classroom Management
Working fine here using Windows 8 CP (non-domain). Just put the name of the PC into the console access rights and that was it. I am only using 3116 at the moment still. -
If you're clustering stuff, if you can get coloured velcro (or anything to differentiate) that's always handy for seeking out the correct set of cables to unbundled when you need to add/remove any cables to that box.

[video] 1980's F1 Much more exciting than now!
DrPerceptron replied to Dos_Box's topic in Jokes/Interweb Things
modern cars still bottom out regularly - kust listen to one of the 2011 RBR cars qualifying, they don't have titanium blocks underneath to produce the pretty sparks... instead they have a plank... which is why Interlagos's main straight looks... odd. I don't necessarily buy into the racing etc being better in the 80s/90s or whatever era you choose... it's different. Aero is the biggest destroyer of 'racing', but it seems you can get around the aero benefit with tyres that actually degrade. -
Forced down the 64bit route...any tips or gotchas to look out for?
DrPerceptron replied to kennysarmy's topic in Windows 7
Software will be your biggest caveat. GPOs should just work. We pushed 64bit out to everything that would take it here in the summer and we didn't change anything on our network at all... we just said this software doesn't work anymore and people were happy with that...but we're lucky in that we don't have shelves of software written by monkeys for use in schools. Printer drivers can be a problem, but it depends on your printers... most printers are fine we've found, only stuff like LaserJet 1000s cause trouble with 64bit OSes. As long as you install the 32 and 64bit drivers it'll just pull down the correct driver when it's installed. -
Link Aggregation - Server 2008 R2
DrPerceptron replied to bwestlake's topic in Windows Server 2008 R2
Link Aggregation also requires supported switch technology (LACP I think). There are quite a few different teaming options and most server network adapters will support them. Intel cards I think bury the teaming config in the driver properties whereas, nVidia, HP and Broadcom provide standalone applications to manage teaming. You should be able to find plenty of documentation from the adapter (or server) manufacturer regarding teaming adapters. Last time I did it with an Intel card there was a nice helpful wizard who guided you along and gave a brief explanation of each of the options and even told you that fault tolerance doesn't really work on dual-port NICs. -
Have you tried a slmgr.vbs -rearm and slmgr.vbs -ato I'm not sure where you found out you have 2300 activations... that seems, odd (unless VAMT tells you) When you run dli, the highest value against "count" will only ever by 50. The rest is *everything* since you activated KMS.

[wds] Recommendations please for school imaging ...
DrPerceptron replied to soveryapt's topic in O/S Deployment
Download: Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2012 - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details I've been skimming through the Print-Ready Documentation for download there and it seems to cover all the bases regarding getting it up and running. -
If you're going to put desktops in classrooms, you need to find a way of either convincing teachers to not use their own laptops... or make it absolutely clear that it is their responsibility to unplug the pc, plug their laptop in and then plug the pc back in for the next person. We have desktops in 95% of classrooms here, but staff retained their laptops (which are 7 years old... vs the majority of the PCs which are 2) and there are a number of staff who are incapable of plugging their laptops in properly (damaging VGA cables etc) and more annoyingly... don't put the room back for the next person. You might also find that if theres a classroom pc in their main teaching rooms, their laptop might never see your network ever again... the longest a teacher has had their laptop at home here was 11 months.

[wds] Recommendations please for school imaging ...
DrPerceptron replied to soveryapt's topic in O/S Deployment
We use MDT2012 here. Microsoft Deployment Toolkit I wasn't happy managing images all the time, so now, we push out the WIM off the DVD and choose the software we want on machines at deployment time - if we want anything post-deployment, we'll roll it out over Group Policy or use Impero to push it out and check it into MDT for future deployments. It's an amazing, tiny little tool that will also deal with backing up and restoring user data for you as well. -
Is Z the drive you map your home dir to? Or are you using Folder Redirection as well? Change the path so that it uses the IP rather than the hostname and see if that works? We had similar messages for weeks until we got fed up and re-wrote everything user-related and pinned it down to IP/DNS wierdness (entirely random occurences, not user or machine specific)

Impero - Delete Files doesnt work
DrPerceptron replied to timbo343's topic in Network and Classroom Management
Their support is top notch. It's not working here either though. The tick box is ticked in the server software, but nothing is logged about the files I deleted... the Window Captions has grabbed that I deleted multiple files though... -
Disagreement with Ricoh engineer. Advice needed.
DrPerceptron replied to edutech4schools's topic in Hardware
We're using an RCPS driver which fixed the problem as we were getting the problem in all sorts of programs. -
It's something we've got on our DHCP box (which is also seperate). Open up the DHCP tool, add your server, expand IPv4 right click on Server Options and "configure options". If you scroll down the list you should see those two options. Then try again.

Not too far off, the rule book was updated after that mandating the use of the wooden plank under the cars amongst other thinsg. There are lots of reasons why racing in persistent, heavy rain is problematic... I'm not trying to justify not racing in the rain, I love driving in the rain and I love watching it, but just pointing out reasons why... most of them are design regulations and limitations of the design regulations - part of the reason my F1 cars all have the same basic shapes and layout. GT Racing is where it's at for the rain... infact, V8 Supercars at Bathurst. There's an awesome video of Glen Seton driving a Skyline in the rain at Bathurst (I'd dig up the video on youtube if it wasn't filtered here, but it's easy to find)

Perez is a class act. Kobayashi is a very "good" overtaker. I'm a fan of both, but I rate Perez as the better driver all round. As for Rain... wet tyres raise the ride height a few mm, but ultimately at speed the downforce pushes the car into the road, at Silverstone they run about 6mm off the ground at a stand still, but 2mm at speed. There's only so much water a tyre can clear... are you honestly saying you've never been in a car that's aquaplaned on UK roads? given that your road car would have at least 10 times the ride height of a modern F1 car?

It does work across VLANS but can't remember if I needed to do anything other than set 2x DHCP scope options: 066 Boot Server Host Name > . 067 Bootfile Name boot\x86\wdsnbp.com

Exchange unbale to send emails externally
DrPerceptron replied to kai91's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
what's mentioned in the Queue Viewer? they should all be backing up in there with a reason why the queue isn't working. Is your AV blocking access to port 25? -
Is there anything in the OSDLOGS (C:\MININT\) I know in the past we had trouble with some display drivers (notably ones for some prehistoric machines), but since there are only 20 of these machines at our site, I ignored the whole thing.

we had tonnes of issues with CS5.5 since we rolled it out, I think it's just not designed to place nicely with networked environments... or non-admin users. kids don't always wait, they just hit save, then log out regardless of whether the task has finished, this usually left incomplete files floating around. Sometimes, you can solve the problem by manually specifying the file extension as part of the filename when saving...

So, I imagine I'm not the first poor soul to come across this and as long as Apple exist, won't be the last either. We have a set of 16 (now 15) iPods that get lent to students, they do their typically rubbish myspace poses, duck faces and the occasional genitalia shot taken by "accident". How do people here go about getting these photos/videos off the iPods and into the grubby hands of the individuals who took the pictures? The only suggestion 'we' have come up with so far is a raft of generic email addresses to sign up for instagram accounts. Ideally, I'd like some sort of solution where they can very easily dump the stuff somewhere and either collect it themselves, or get it dumped in their user areas (without it remembering who the last entry was and very quick timeouts). Empart your wisdom upon me oh mighty fellow edugeekers! *I'm not at all a fan of using iPods in this fashion, so apologies if this comes across as unnecessarily negative.

It's all about science, engineering and understanding the world we live in... granted it's not on the level of CERN , but there's still something slightly wonderful. What was the point in going to the moon or creating the ISS? Why bother exploring the bottom of the ocean? You want to test materials to the extreme, otherwise, why would you bother creating new ones when they'll be vastly more expensive initially? Red Bull have seemingly unlimited pockets, it's often a struggle to find someone who isn't sponsored by Red Bull these days - hell I know of a student here who is.
