Anyone upgraded from 2012 to 2012 R2 yet?
DrPerceptron replied to DrPerceptron's topic in Windows Server 2012
VMware Compatibility Guide: System Search According to the VMware site it is... (5.1 too). Yes, DHCP Failover is in 2012. It's not instant failover (maybe you can set it like that?) > Ensuring High Availability of DHCP using Windows Server 2012 DHCP Failover - Microsoft Windows DHCP Team Blog - Site Home - TechNet Blogs -
Looking at doing it this week or next. Just wondering if anyone has done it already, does it support the Office 2010 KMS patch? (I haven't found much concrete info googling yet) Is anyone using DHCP Failover and upgraded without breaking the relationship?

Mandatory. The only thing I will say in terms of performance gains, is to make sure PCs pull down the correct profiles for the version of windows - ie: not a W7 profile on W8.

Thunderbirds is coming back in 2015 on ITV as well... Parker will be the only character voiced by the original voice actor.

SEAT, Mercedes-Benz and several other manufacturers let young drivers out and about in their little cars on closed courses with an instructor usually. They might be unrealistically priced though, I think I saw £30 for 30 minutes in some places.

That is madness... I'm 25 and have never paid more than £700 since I was 19... and my current and previous cars were not sensible, practical cars. That said, I don't have a problem with people having a minimum number of lessons with an actual current and qualified instructor (some I've learnt actually aren't!), to be 18. Maybe we should be looking to move to a more inclusive set of driving lessons and tests that resemble the requirements of a license in Finland - 18 hours of instructed driving, a session on a slippery course and there's a city driving aspect to it as well. The fact you can pass your test without driving in the rain, at night or on a motorway is a bit of a joke as well. On the subject of little cars, I once had a 2012 Ibiza Eco as a courtesy car... it had a little 1.2l TDI pushing out an eye-watering 60-70bhp and I did not feel safe in it at all. Braking on its low-resistance tyres was about the length of a football pitch at 30mph and it's acceleration could be best measured with a calendar.

90% of our user network is P4 (SX280) to Core2 Duo (Optiplex 755) God I wish they would all mysteriously fail in a spectacular fashion.

I've known about both versions of Silkroad - the popular MMORPG and the unrestricted marketplace - for a while. Is it a problem that you didn't know about it? There are also several replacements to Silkroad ready to come online soon to fill the gap. TOR contains lots of dodgy stuff, part of the reason it exists and part of the reason NSA/GCHQ are investing a lot of time and money into resources and technologies to destabilise and de-anonymise users.

Microsoft Virtual Academy Why go anywhere else? (get the experience, then use it to pass the exams for Microsoft Qualifications)

If you have any problems with PCs and they're logging any errors/warnings about Time, look at them first. Logged on as you, make sure that "w32tm /resync" is successful, also have a look see what "w32tm /query /status /verbose" thinks about everything on the machine As for the final error: take a look at this MS Support article for an unrelated product, but consider the solutions as possible troubleshooting steps to start with. MSBBN: Wireless Connection Is Periodically Lost The rest I generally ignore (that keyboard one might warrant some investigation too)

Opening files saved by students
DrPerceptron replied to Mrmichaelhill's topic in Windows Server 2008 R2
Did you remove/deny delete permissions at all? I recall having some trouble with saving files to a "public" folder which I removed the delete permissions on (because let's face it, we all know someone will delete them) and getting similar errors because of the way Office saves documents (it works in a temporary file in the original directory). My solution, though ungraceful was previous versioning and auditing... though I'm not entirely sure the auditing is totally accurate/useful. -
Have you tried deployment on a vanilla machine?

Have you tried asking your school? In the past, we've taken on students for a week and get them to assist with a little office tidying - they tend to find stuff about their age hanging around and also setting up new policies to roll out software, run through of MDT, some shadowing while supporting staff etc. If you have a big network, then your school would be quite a good place to think about. EDIT: As your location is listed as Exeter, there are loads of big IT places around there - Met Office, AI Corporation (yes, I know it sounds like an evil company from a weird robot film), I think Eclipse (ISP) is still based in Exeter and many more.- 6 replies

Not sure. We licensed our DC with a KMS host key and installed the Office 2010 key and patch and that's it. MDT uses a KMS option, as does office, anything that throws a wobbly about invalid product keys, we throw a KMS Client key at it (KMS Client Setup Keys), activate it and it's usually happily licensed.
-
I don't think it shows any keys regardless (ours doesn't, other than the partial KMS server key). You can use VAMT to check and troubleshoot the status of client machines though - it's an excellent tool (I use VAMT2 because its lower maintenance)

Did you change the permissions on the driver files? I can't find the info on what you need to do (we gave staff full control I know that much), presumably it's over the files in c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers... that are in the zip.

I found that with Scratch and more recently Lexia... I've just been using GPP Files to push them out to machines. I know they all have the same version of the ini then as well.

Saltash, Cornwall (Near Plymouth) - Deputy Network Manager
DrPerceptron replied to pirran's topic in Educational IT Jobs
I forgot about that Torquay post :/ I need to look into whether I can viably consider moving to the area (an hour's each way drive doesn't appeal, regardless of how much I enjoy driving), the salary band is a concern, but I'm likely to apply regardless. How big is the team/department if it includes graphic designers etc? -

Need help with home laptop before I shout at Dell again
DrPerceptron replied to elsiegee40's topic in Windows 7
Did you try installing the software one at a time, restarting after each to see if the problem exists because of one piece of software being weird? When you have the black screen, in task manager is userinit.exe and explorer.exe started? -

There's an "open missions" thing in the phone (top right). I've not used it though so I can't say if it's any good.

Have you tried running gpresult /H on both machines and comparing the results to see if they are doing something weird with a group policy somewhere along the line? Likewise, what happens if you move a "broken" machine to the same OU as the other machines? Or are they actually physically in the same room?
