  1. Have to say, apart from my current problem with safe search, the FortiGate units we have here are amazing...
  2. Thanks Arthur, but our school management system only works on IE so that's our default browser.... The Fortigate has the option for safe search, but as i've said it just stopped forcing it! Does anyone on here have a FortiGate that can confirm or deny the problem?
  3. Matty, thanks its on the HTTPS side of google, but it worked a few weeks ago and we've changed nothing! I can use the FG to do deep packet inspection, but thats a bit over kill!
  4. To add to this, we have just found a problem with both our Fortigate units, they are both now allowing images in that are not what we would like, safe search had stopped. Is anyone else getting this problem? I have been in touch with another school who use SonicWall and they are getting the same. It only appears to be google...
  5. Normally i would, but our e-mail is configured a little different. Basically we have a 100meg pipe for general internet vai C&W and our e-mail on a 10meg pipe from RM, so the exchange server needs to look at RM's connection and not the C&W one, if you get what i mean!
  6. Morning all, I've been battling a funny error that has recently popped up on my exchnage box, and so far have drawn up a blank, so fingers crossed some may be able to lift the stone i haven't. Right the even log shows error 2013 and 2012 "SMTP could not connect to DNS server 194.238.48.3 the protocol used was UPD. It may be down or inacessable" Now, exchange is working fine, we can send and recieve. I can't ping the DNS server by IP from any of my machines However i can do a NSLookup using it Exchange is set to use these as external DNS serves and from my lasy check RM haven't changed them So thats it, i'm lost...any ideas? Thanks, Iain
  7. Actually in surrey, Charterhouse School. Was in west sussex, at Farlington School.
  8. Upload is always a problem, the speedtest site isn't great for it, but it constantly being logged with C&W as its never what they promised. As for paying, we've set up a payment for the % share, so if we only get 20mb upload we only pay 20% of the 100meg price...if you get what i mean
  9. Sorry to burst the bubble but we have a Les 100 (that’s 100meg both ways) fibre from our phone room to the local exchange... http://www.mni-solutions.com/images/web.jpg
  10. Just a thought, do you have any streeming on that part of the network? Happened here when a tech turned off the IGMP blocking and flodded the network with multicast traffic!! Needless to say, he doens't work here any more
  11. Plan on doing a domain migration over the summer all 2003 to 2008, but all on fresh hardware and fresh installs, no upgrade option being ticked! From what i hear and using it in our test enviroment 2008 is one fancy bit of kit. The R2 is even better allows for pull real time P2V migration!! Almost does me out a job!
  12. Wow quick reply... We're a MS shop here so no VMWare i'm afraid (just don't have the internal know how)... 2008R2 is what the plan is (most of my techs are MCSA or MSP) so we tend to lean quite heavly in MS products. The network is all HP 2524, 2650, 2610 and 5308 or 5406 swithes with a gig link to the core and 10gig link between cores. Good to see that my thining is still in the land of reality!
  13. Hi all, I've recently taken over management of a fairly large school network (1000+ Users), having been here a year its become apparent that the current set-up has been cobbled together, the documentation is almost nonexistent and after a big infrastructure refresh in the summer (new core switches HP5400’s, 10Gig link, VLan implientation and new edge kit) the network is still slow and creaking. So my plan is to re-build the entire domain, all on new hardware and start a fresh. So what I’m asking here is, if budget was no object and you wanted to create a new domain for 1000 users what would you do! My idea so far: 2 x Domain Controllers (Running DHCP, DNS, etc) 1 x File server for staff 1 x File serve for students Both sharing a SAN of disks 2 x Exchange Servers 1 x Back-up to disk server with LTO 4 Auto loader on 1 x Web Server 1 x Intranet Server Now not all of these have to be physical machines, I can use VM’s!! I throw the floor open to comments and suggestions....
  14. Hello all, i've been buzzing the site for a few months now and thought it finally time to join up! I'm Iain, a Network manager for a big independent school in Godalming. Prior to this I was in IT for a big pharma company, looking after IT in the UK and US offices, along with the odd trip to India for help out there. Just wanted to say the forum is great, been browsing for some info and found it extremely useful. All the best, Iain
