CIFS support in lion was upgraded to support microsofts v2 of the protocol or something like that maybe this is the issue people are seeing? I have connected to my synology ds101 through smb and haven't experienced any issues. It is slow but then it always has been really with only 10/100 connection and an ATA100 drive inside I have adobe cs5 installed and opened ps. It opened. Whether it works properly I don't know as that about as much checking as I did. Lion server however is horrible. IMO it is completely unusable in anything but a home environment. While trying to set up the services to get some sort of usability out of it I found the essential ones (web, webmail) not to be easy to configure at all. Couldn't even get webmail running at all. Anyway back to lion. I have mail configured for google mail access. Runs ok but I don't have much in the way of email in there. Speed overall though I do think has been improved. The response of the OS seems snappier.

Why using login hooks? Can you not just add the shares to the login items using WGM? This is how I mount staff data shares, pupil data shares and an applications share found on the windows server. Also you can mount afp shares using Kerberos authentication. Do man mount_afp for the command. I think that's what it is. It's been a while since I looked at this as it was easier using WGM.

Hello, I came across this site while browsing: Michael Kuron's Blog There is some interesting reading here (well, i thought so anyway)about all sorts of stuff. Its not a great deal of info but what is there seems quite useful. I posted it in the mac forum as there are 2/3 interesting articles potentially relating to OS X. One is about building an OpenLDAP server using Linux and also has a plist available for the Directory Util plugin configuration. Could be useful since the XServe is no longer with us. Also there is one about making Secure Dynamic DNS updates against a Windows Server 2008 R2 box. Again useful for mac clients or any others needing to do this. Anyway, I hope it helps some folks out there.

Hello, I have been given a USB Stick by the head who is asking if I can sort a problem. The folder that contains important data can no longer be access on her USB Stick. I have had a look at it and found that the file seemed to have no file association. I stuck a .doc on the end and found Word could still not open it. On closer inspection I realise this is in fact a folder which cannot be accessed. Double-clicking it just tries to open a programme and then prompts you to choose one. I have tried to recover the folder from the drive with software on both OS X and Windows XP but each comes back with lost data that has been deleted but nothing picks up the dodgy folder. I have verified the stick with both Disk Util in OS X (which reports no errors) and also ran a chkdsk from the CMD prompt which again states that there are no erors. How can I recover the files inside this folder if nothing detects it as a folder to recover? Hope someone can help me here. TIA.

Hello, I have an issue with the Meet the Staff module. All of the images are fine in the small thumbnail view but when you click on them you get an undefined note in the top-left corner of the enlarged image. This isn't so noticeable with the default sam image. However replacing the default image with an actual image results in the enlarged image to still be the default image with the undefined message in the corner. Can anyone shed any light into whats gone wrong. I have updated the moo tools installation as well as the core design engine stuff. The Core design web gallery has it's own highslide style so I am thinking that there may be a conflict somewhere. Are these guys still a valid SSL Cert company? Does any info get sent to them data-wise? I'm not entirely sure how SSL works. I would like to secure the connection between my VLE and the clients accessing it. i would also like to secure the connection on my website and webmail system.

If it's just IE then it doesn't matter really. Although I would still choose VirtualBox myself. Also VirtualBox was the only VM manager that supported PXE booting at one point. This was the main point for myself. If you could use this feature it may be a deal-breaker for the other alternatives if they don't support it.

One thing I would like to know about is how you lock down your windows clients if you have no AD infrastructure to dole out GPOs. Do you use Local GPOs instead or something else entirely?

The only person who can change any of the system settings /system files is the root user. The admin has to enter a password before he can change anything too. The only thing an admin can change without authentication is the applications in the applications folder. You can also disallow access to the system volumes using WGM. You can also set read only access to them.

I don't restrict access to applications on an app by app basis. I use the folders instead. Any apps that are in the apps folder that I don't want them to run and that can be moved I move them to the utils folder. They can run all apps in the apps folder but none in the utils and server folder. But then my school is a primary school. I've had too many problems trying to chase down applications that get disallowed because they aren't in the list of approved apps (Perian's updates checker for one). Although the apps themselves live in the applications folder, some apps stick things in other locations that want to run to do other things. These also need to be in the list to stop the error messages popping up. Some don't stop trying either and so the only thing to do is to log off and then back on. Front row is a prime example of this IIRC.

What do the logs say? Also do you have the Home dirs on an OS X Server? I'm not sure if this issue is present with Windows servers hosting Home dirs. In some instances if your pupils and staff have 2 different shares for their home dirs, i.e. Staff_Homes for staff, Pupils_Homes for pupils, when one of them (staff in this example) login first, it can stop the pupil logging straight after. Only when the client is restarted does the login then work.

Not sure if this relates to you as well but one of the bigger issues is that some of the licensing programmes Apple run aren't available on this side of the pond. As far as I know. One example of this is the iPad volume licensing. I haven't seen anything with regards to this over here. If there are indeed more and you are included as being in the US then at least you have one additional plus point. I'm not entirely certain but I thought that when the previous version of an OS gets a .1 update don't this make it compatible to some extent? Also if you can't downgrade the OS then IMO don't buy new hardware (unless you HAVE to of course). Apple's loss There is also the point of when you purchase newer hardware with the newer OS version, there is a chance that software could be incompatible. Take Snow leopard and all older webcams for example. Macam doesn't work with 10.6 (Quicktime X) properly. This has been a major pain in the ass for us and stopped us upgrading our laptops to 10.6, and as 10.6 is only £20 per license, and resolves one of the biggest issues 10.5 had with dual booting systems, It has had a big impact on how these machines are used. If these were newer models with no way of downgrading, we would seriously have to think about the purchase.

I've read somewhere that Windows 7 uses a newer version of cifs/smb for their file sharing. Apple have decided to build their own smb client to access these shares as SAMBA doesn't work properly with this newer type. How true it is I don't know. I'll see if I can find a link to it.

I switched from End point to Sophos. During my testing (downloaded the trial) I found that Sophos seemed to run relatively well on my server 2003 member server. Pulled in the Computers from the OUs Ok and deployed to all the machines with no issues once the download of the updated client install completed. I have used earlier versions of Sophos but it seemed to miss a fair bit. When I moved schools they had symantec Corporate edition which I found to be quite good. It did have issues deploying the client at times though but in the whole it did tend to stay out of the way. Now we upgraded to end-point. Man, is that thing dodgy. After trying to resolve an installation issue, I upgraded (after checking the system requirements using Symantec's own tool were OK) to 11.6.2 or something like that only to find that the system came to a complete crawl. Opening the central console took about 15 minutes and thats before logging in.

basing a system solely on graphical abilities is pointless. However, having a system on the market that cannot display the detail that their competitors can will always lose out. The Wii was a good concept but lacked one thing that the Kinect is also lacking along with the Playstation Move. GAMES! In my mind the way the Wii should have worked is using the Wii Fit board along with the motion controller. You could use the board as a sort of movement platform and use the controls to look and interact with stuff. Could of been interesting in a Zelda game. Speaking of Zelda, could the new Skyward sword be the first game on the new machine? I bet it is

I have looked into the template on the Edugeek Joomla install. Apparently the Axerescheck template only works on Joomla 1.5. I looked into how easy it would be to upgrade it to 1.6. It should be simple-ish if you know how to do it (which I don't really) but some of the config entries in the template files are missing which means you would perhaps needs to manually add the right bits to get it to work under 1.6. Sorry for the vagueness but it has been a while since I looked into it. Synacks media sensing should do the job. I had to do it to a few of my machines before. It's not all of them though (even though they are the same) which is a little odd but still.

The flash plugin on a Mac laptop is terrible. The CPU when watching a video on You Tube is around 90% use until you go stop the playback. Adobe have never released a single version on Flash that has been optimised on the mac platform. Only when Jobs said that Flash would not be supported on the i-devices has this started to slowly change. The last few versions have been better but still no where near the Windows version. It is only when you have had to use Flash on the mac platform for a period of time can you really see how bad it is. The Plugin crashes often (less now though) and the battery drain on the laptops is bad. To have this sort of drain on a device that really requires a decent battery life to have any real use out in the wild would have a massive effect on how well it would sell IMO. I mean if you think about performance when browsing and battery life is shorter than it's rivals, who is going to choose it over the competitors? But with Adobe releasing the flash to iOS converter, is this not an option for the developers?
