You can also get a simplified ARD tool bar as well to make things a little simpler for him. It allows access to the tools he would need without the whole GUI getting in the way.

We have some Utax printers that are just rebranded Kyocera FS 2020D models. The drivers work fine for us.

You can mount DMGs on the machine with ARD on and drag the pkg file intot he install window and do it straight from there. Unless there is a valid reason to copy the .dmg across and start the process, it may be a bit of a waste of time.

If I'm not mistaken, the leopard clients get their updates from the snow-leopard-merged catalog as well. Also there is a post on AFP548 site about tweaking the 10.6 server to provide Lion Updates if needed. so you should only need the one URL.

To run the software updates from ARD you need to specify the proxy settings for the admin user. I send mine out by managed preferences for the computer list. If you don't specify the proxy settings with your update server in the bypass list the update will fail when trying to connect. Once this is done you can then click on the Unix option and from the templates list choose Miscellaneous > Install all Software Updates in ARD. This should run the command silently (even at the login prompt) and then install the updates. You may need to manually restart the machines to complete the process. Also make sure that you lock the machines while this is going on as there is no sign that the process is going on from the client side. In ARD however, you will get a live report from each client. Again this should be possible for stand-alone clients.

I think the answer lies with the sidebar. If you have the sidebar configured to show connected servers then the user can click on these and view the shares available to them. The shares should mount automatically using Kerberos if you are setup in that way.

Have you updated Office 2011? A new update has recently been released that resolves some issues.

One thing to try is to restart the NetBoot service and also untick the shares in the NetBoot settings and then re-tick them to force the NFS share permissions to be set correctly. Also try restarting the NFS service on the Xserve. You may need to drop down to the command prompt to do this... sudo serveradmin -list I think to see the services that you can manage. Also if you hard reset a machine while it is net booted from deploy studio this can sometimes crash the NFS service.

What price did you get out of curiosity?

To be honest I think it's more a training/learning issue rather than a technical one. The 2 are there for a reason and maybe they need to be shown/told the difference. Other than that not sure how you would get around this.

I've tried to make a meta package using apples package maker but I struggled with the permissions. I tried to use a package to install simple apps that. Need copying over such as the comic life but not for ARD though. I wanted to create a mpkg file to allow for easier setup after the imaging process since deploy studio can also install applications as part of a post imaging process included in the workflow. If that makes sense But yeah ARD is great for managing os x clients. Don't forget you can do almost anything in this software. You can also copy plist files into right locations, images into the desktop pictures location (great for forcing the desktop background image), even whole folders. You can edit applications and then re-copy the apps updating all of them in one go! And don't forget the terminal command. Run software update for all clients at once. @stevenwba, ARD works with the account you have setup for remote management. As long as you have the copy process enabled for the local admin user on the clients then being standalone should not matter at all. Hope this helps.

You may be able to download the Server Admin 10.7 tools and install them on a lion client. See if this allows you to manage these clients?

Copying apps over is really as simple as installing the MPKGs. If any apps downloaded just need to be placed in the applications folder, this can be done simply enough with ARD. You just choose the copy command and then pick what you want to copy and Choose the Applications location from the list. You can also specify full paths which is handy. I have deployed Comic life like this: Copy the Comic Life application into the Applications folder. Copy the Plasq license file into /Library/Application Support/ This works fine. Just work out where the files need to go and then use ARD to copy them into place.

Yes it will. I have just deployed Windows 7 Pro with OS X 10.6.8 to some new Macbook Pros. Worked absolutely fine. Remember to download the latest version of Deploy Studio though and also update the .NBI file with the latest version of Deploy Studio.

Am I reading this right? You have a newer version of Office and so want to update their Docks with the new version? If so then just open WGM on a Client machine and then go to the group that the users are in and then click the preferences icon at the top. Click on the dock option and then click on the "Manage Once" option. Now change the old Office icons to the newer Office icons. If you have not got things set up this way or do not have a mac server then you could use ARD to copy a cm.apple.dock.plist file into the location you want it to go into. Log on as one of the users that have the docks set up right copy the preference file and then use ARD to deploy into the user.template. Failing this you could just use the sudo cp command to copy the file into the correct location. I wouldn't bother trying to change the file (unless you don't want to remove other previously set dock options), I would just overwrite the file with the updated one.

If you're not extending the Schema of your AD or using another piece of software such as AdmitMac or Centrify to manage your macs then you will more than likely need a Mac server anyway to lock them down. This is the common reason for a Mac Server and occasionally the only reason one is purchased. Being able to use it to deploy images is a bonus. Also Deploy Studio can image standard PCs as well so it could be your all-in-one solution. Not sure of its support for pre-staing and scripting though.

You would need to use augmented records to do this. You place the user home dir path in the augmented record and then on login it will overwrite what is found in the AD with this new home path. However, remember that the 2 home dirs will be separated and so a link to the Home dir on the Windows partition will be needed either on the dock or on the desktop, unless you want to keep them separate. Also bear in mind the potential for confusion. How you go about Augmented records though is a different matter. I only looked into it briefly when 10.6.3 came out and supported it. Never got mine to work (Apple-IM Handle attribute) but that doesn't meant o say you won't have better luck. TAke a look at the Apple education/Enterprise how-to videos on their site. I'm sure I saw an augmented records video on there.

The hostname and the computer name are different. The computer name is the name found in the sharing pane in system preferences. The name with the number between brackets is the computer name. I think the local hostname changes depending on the IP address it gets. In deploystudio under the Computers lists there is the option to specify Local Hostname and Computer Name. These are specified by the mac address of the machine. I've never used the workflows to deploy hostnames so can't comment on how these work.

Many thanks for the summary. It's most appreciated. It does sound like something that could do the job we want to do. The problem with using Excel is that the details won't get updated (i.e. new school year year groups change, pupils leave and arrive etc.) We, or I, was hoping for something that would be more centralised and perhaps the marksheet could fill the roll. It's looking to be that I am becoming the data manager

Yeah, sounds very similar to my issue. I would swap a working stick for this suspected faulty one to see if it now boots and then the working machine should fail with the dodgy stick.

If you don't hear the sound of the chime Apple's make when booting then it isn't getting that far. My iMac had a similar issue where you just got a black screen, no chime but you could hear the fan turning (listen closely ) IT turned out to be faulty RAM. To check there's a screw on the bottom of the case just above the foot. This will remove a cover to the RAM. There are leavers on each side. Pulling these apart should make the RAM pop out. Mine is a core 2 duo aluminium iMac. The white ones may be slightly different.

Hello, I was wondering how you guys collect and maintain/manage the EAL data in youor schools? Is there any additional software that you have to do this or do you use your Student record system? Ours is Sims.Net. Does Sims.Net have any EAL modules that will allow us to interrogate the data for our needs? Sorry for all the questions. I would just like to see a better, more efficient way of dealing with EAL and related records/assessment data. At the moment we use an Excel spreadsheet. We have just started out recording and monitoring EAL properly, but already I can see this becoming increasingly difficult to maintain, both through the amount of data and also the limited time to update the records. The spreadsheet was created manually so any data coming out of Sims would be difficult to import as far as I am aware. Hope you can help.

VirtualBox was at one point the only VM software that allowed for PXE booting on a mac. This would obviously make it much easier to deploy your XP image OS onto your VM. Not sure if the rest have caught up.
