See if there is an authorised Apple repair centre close to you. I know we use KRCS for our repairs and they kindly pick it up when in the area an bring it back to us as well once repaired. Very kind of them

iOS may be a simple interface to use but this does not mean that it is less powerful than its competitors. iOS was built from the ground up to support multi-touch and it shows. With regards to purchasing more software, you would only need to upgrade the license to cover the VLE which IMO isn't a bad thing. The more content that you get on there and let kids have access to is surely a good thing.

In theory you could edit your local copy and then send it out using the ARD copy command. It should work in the same way. Just use the Root user when doing the copy and specify the full path as /etc

For me the first port of call for the font book would be the console. It may tell you more about what is going on. Also the same for word 08. Also with regards to Word have a look around MS site. There was a deployment guide for Office 02/04 which required the fonts to be redirected or something IIRC.

With the implementation of Mobile computing and VLE's most educational software is being made available for online use. Most educational software is usually flash-based and most licensing is changing to incorporate VLEs as well. I know that the interactive charts (Daydream education?) can now be licensed for VLE use. It costs a little more but more useful IMO. The only issue with this direction is that Apple's hardware doesn't support flash yet. It's an interesting stance since if anyone here has used flash on a Mac you will know just how bad it really is. As soon as Adobe release a version that does't require 100% use of a qua-core processor to display a video then I'm sure Mr. Jobs will change his mind. Also with the release of Lion/Lion Server comes the Profile Server. This should allow establishments to deploy and manage Apple hardware more easily.

I have just migrated to 1.6 from 1.5.22 using the jupgrade module. I am running the Edugeek template. It seems to have messed up the layout of the site. Has anyone gone through a manual upgrade process? If so did this go well?

Out of Interest do you have more space on the XServe as opposed to the Windows domain? I use the XRAID here to store the home dirs and use smb to connect the windows users to the Homedir and directed to the Documents folder in the Group Policies. This seems to work really well. I then use IIS on the Windows server coupled with the FTP Service and have taught the pupils how to configure iWeb for FTP access. IIS is configured to pick up the information directly fro the shared folder where they publish their sites to. I use the FTP service on the windows server as Apple's FTP service is terrible. Just another option

It's at times like this when you realise what teachers can go through when using ICT to teach. I recommend all IT support staff take at least one lesson where ICT is required throughout. It's a pain in the ass. I taught email once and the server was fine first lesson. Came to the 2nd lesson and no-one could send anything. Turned out that the SMTP service had failed and didn't restart. Took me about 15 minutes to sort out the issue.

Be aware that when using DeployStudio to deploy images they use the "-" to separate the name and the appended number for the client name when using it for host naming. For example, iMac-01, iMac-02 etc. I've never seen the issue mentioned though.

Or buy a cheap 2nd hand Smart board and I think this then covers you for use of their software in School. IIRC you only need to have one piece of hardware to be entitled to use their software, unless the license agreement has changed?

Apple's implementation of SMB on the server is (I think) similar to the linux one except they have to roll their own for Open Directory Support. You can edit the smb.conf file directly if you wish to but you will then need to manually start and stop the service on the server. The clients though I'm not so sure about but then it shouldn't too different since to connect to XP client shares relatively fine as well as Server 2003r2. My setup is like so: My OD Server distributes the management settings but also hosts the home dirs via AFP and SMB. The clients also connect to my Windows Server 2003 r2 shares for the Papercut client app as well a 2003r2 server for the Applications share, again via SMB. These all mount on login using Kerberos. These clients are a mix of 10.6.6 and 10.5.8. My domain suffix is sch.uk. I steered clear of the .local due to the issues with Tiger. My DNS is replying with all of the correct DNS records. My clients also have manual IP with DHCP and reserved DNS entries. I have configured the DHCP Server to update the DNS records on the clients behalf, trying to keep the reverse and A records updated. I generally don't run into issues apart from a slight slow-down (due to a single 1gb connection to the server) or the odd client not picking up it's managed preferences (damn you Apple, you said you fixed it ) Are your servers 2008 or 2003? Do you have a spare 2003 license you could use to test some home dirs on to see if it is indeed a compatibility issue between the two? It took Apple to 10.5 to start digitally signing connections to the SMB service or whatever it was. Before this you had to disable the setting in Group Policy. Did I read that MS have recently beefed up the security around that area again? Maybe causing incompatibility issues again. Just a thought. Also remember that OS X doesn't support DFS shares out of the box.

NetBoot Possibly. NetBoot and NetInstall are 2 separate things. You create a NetInstall set to boot from and start an installation or restore process of the OS. NetBoot allows you to boot into an OS as if you were using it. Upon restart the machine reboots again off the network but all changes from the last session are lost. This is part of the NetBoot service in OS X Server. NetBoot Overview

From what I understand when a password on the Windows account has been changed, when you log into the Mac it brings up a dialog that tells you that it doesn't match the keychain and so gives you the option to update it. Alternatively you could just trash their keychain when an account has had it's password reset.

Sorry just noticed that you had replied. Google decided to mark it as spam. I purchased mine a good while ago now from the Apple store. It was the terratec cynergy t2 that was in the box. But i think this has been discontinued now as all tuners tend to be stick based. An alternative would be to build a iptv system. Myth TV has been ported to os x. The only issue I found was to find a compatible tuner that works with it Apparently the homerun box works with it but i wasn't willing to spend that much to find out.

You may be able to use the elgato stuff. Their software is really good and has an iPhone app to go with it. It allows recording shows remotely i think. I purchased the elgato dtt tuner a while ago now. haven't used it in a while. Still the software gets updated with additional features quite regularly. Take a look at their website, it may give more information with regards to the remote side of things. Disconnect any devices connected to the machine and try to boot. If this still fails proceed with the safe mode. If this fails pop in the server dvd and then boot from the disc (hold down the c key) and check the HDD using the disk util from the utilities menu.

Set up the additional OS X server as a replicated server. This will replicate all the information in the ldap DB and kerberos DB in case the OD master fails. If the OD master fails you just promote the replica server up to an OD master and continue. However, how this works with bound machines I'm not sure as I've never used this feature. We just backup the WGM groups and preferences. Rebuilding an OS X server from scratch is pretty quick really. If you export all of the server preferences using server admin, once the os is installed reconfiguring the entire server is really just a few clicks. One of OS X servers better features

I got MoH from asda for £25 new and I must admit I like it. The dingle player campaign is a nit ropey but the online stuff was made by the guys that made battlefield bad company's online stuff. I must say it feels a big more real (although I've never experienced the real thing. Respect to those that have). You get shot and don't know a thing about it. The range of the weapons is huge. From one end of the map to the other. The sniper rifle actually feels like a modern sniper rifle with good range and thats the basic model as well. Looking forward to levelling up to see what else is available. In all I think I would recommend it. It's Hard though

One thing I picked up on straight away is the .local domain. Although apple says this isn't an issue anymore, in some cases I believe it can still cause issues. The log in problems you are seeing may be due to the shares themselves or permissions related. Take a look in the post I made with apples best practices guide for ad-od integration. The best thing to do to narrow things down is tail the logs using a second machine over ssh. You can use a local admin account on the machine next to it if you want. You will then be able to view the log entries as they are generated. You can also run a tcpdump on the client to see what is happening in regards to thenetwork traffic. You may find that dns may be the issue which brings me right back to the .local thing. Hope this helps a little.

But what difference do they make to your game? Do you still get taken out by some random person that should have zero chance but still does? You will always get the lucky ones but I don't think it's that all the time. Maybe I'm just blaming others and other things for my lack of skill What I meant by ghost and the choppers is bringing them down rather than being invisible. IMO You just can't bring down a piloted chopper without ghost enabled with a strela.

From what I can see using ghost is one of the only ways of staying alive. Especially when the bloody choppers come out. Man, I hate killstreaks. They serve no purpose but to ruin the game. I don't even mind campers. Actually I don't understand this term. To me a camper is someone who sits in one place abusing a glitch or right next to a spawn location. For the definition of camping, check out Killzone 2 where if you lay a spawn grenade they just sit over the spawn location meleeing it until it disappears. This to me is camping. Sitting in a certain location with a sniper rifle picking people off isn't really camping. Annoying if you keep getting shot, yeah but it is the way some people play and I would suspect part of war.

None of the Apple keyboards come with the Apple key now IIRC. They just have either the cmd logo or just cmd on them. maybe have a look at ScrumpyMacs - Buy or sell second hand or used apple macs, iPod, iMacs, PowerMacs, Mac Pros, Mac Books and spare parts online.. They may have some of the older keyboards. Hope this helps.

We purchased some old hitachi IDE drives from Misco instead of Apple's extortionate offering. 500GB HDDs they were for around £49. We used to have 1TB striped RAID and now have 2 1TB arrays with 1 mirroring (0+1 is it?) I am looking to obtain either an XServe before they go or a mac pro with the drive bays and a raid card or just flesh out the remaining HDD bays in the XServe. This will give us more space than the XRAID without the hassle of finding the carriers.
