It's a shame that you can't get it working as it is one of the easiest WYSIWYG web site creators available. You could argue that you don't get to edit/manipulate the HTML but you can add HTML snippets which allows you to add your HTML code or if you wish or just use embed code and place it on your pages. Redirects are simply like the windows Group policy counterpart where some folders are redirected on login. Useful for networked account folders such as the caches folder, logs folder etc. You could check the permissions on the /library/application support/iWeb folder. This is where iWeb stores its domain file used to build the site. Also check the console logs to find out what exactly is going on. It should give you. An idea of the problem being encountered. What hidden folders do you need to get on a regular basis? If you find the need to get to your library folder constantly, use the Go To Folder in Finder and then type in where you wish to go to i.e /etc. Then when it appears just press cmd + up arrow. This will take you up one level. Then click and drag the folder onto your sidebar. This will create a shortcut that will allow you the get to the folder in one click. This also works once the Library folder has been unhidden. You can hide at again after if you wish to.

Are there any re-directs being pushed out via WGM? If so that may be the cause. I had an issue with iWorks when i redirected the printers folder. The app would always crash when trying to print. Once the redirect was removed everything went back to how it should be. Another thing I have found is that if you redirect the Application Support folder, any apps/programs that rely on it's original location will fail. iWeb may be one of these since IIRC it places it's sites file there which it uses to store the pages being created. I use it in a fully networked home dir environment (using AFP) and I haven't had any issues like you are seeing. I'm on 10.6.8 fully updated. What version of OS X are you running?

have you confirmed that the proxy details being pushed out (including the port number) from WGM are indeed correct? It's the only thing I can think of. You could perhaps log in as a local admin (choose to ignore any preferences being pushed) and then set the proxy manually to see if this works.

I found an error in the Event Viewer. Apparently there is a DNS blocklist and that in this list by default is an entry for forward requests for the wpad file. This stops any queries for this host. To resolve this you need to either remove the entry or stop the DNS server using the blocklist entirely. More information can be found here... Windows Server\DNS\Event 6268 on trying to query WPAD

I would agree with Sean about the use of Webdav. It seems to be the best way of using the iPads with multiple users. If you have a VLE which can utilise webdav shares to store documents (I know StudyWiz does) then it can potentially be a great way to work. You can also use an app called webdav nav. This is more like a browser-based way of viewing webdav shares. I have experimented recently with the new iBooks author tool for mac and sharing it out using a webdav share which can be accessed via the webdav nav app, potentially allowing pupils to import the iBook I made into their own iBooks library.

There's a few guides on the mac forum to help you through the set up of shares on the mac server. What you want to accomplish with the home dirs however, requires the use of Augmented Records. I haven't used augmented records for ages, and never got mine to work anyway (I was trying to use IM handle augmented records though for iChat). There is a video tutorial I think on how to use these on Apple's Education site.

You need to be running at least 10.6.8 to be able to use the Mac App store. If your machine is capable of running snow leopard then updating it the latest version will do the trick and it will provide you with access to the mac app store. The mac version of Pages is £13.99. Hope this helps.

Hello, I have tried to create a new website in IIS which is using a 2nd IP address that has been configured on the 2nd nic on the server. This is to be used as an auto proxy detection service. However, after having created the site and configured the nic and added the dns record, the server cannot resolve to the 2nd dns name that is the new site. For example, 2nd nic IP is 192.168.1.10 and the site name is proxy.example.com. I have created an A record for proxy.example.com with a reverse entry. The reverse entry works as expected but the forward lookup cannot be resolved. The IP address pings as expected. What could be causing this problem? TIA.

I tend to install the KPrintD software on our mac clients (and servers). This allows the os x clients to use kerberos authentication to a mac server that holds queues connected to the Windows print queues. I have heard that this is no longer needed however, I have yet to see that this is true. The file is at http://www.deploystudio.com. Get it while you can if you wish to use it as they have deprecated it now. I haven't had a single authentication issue. My set up is... Window 2003 Print Server with Papercut installed and monitoring the Print Queues. A 10.5.8 PowerPC mac server with the 2003 print queues added. The only reason I do this is to allow me to manage the print queues in WGM. WGM on this server pushes out the print queues to the clients.

there a tonnes of locations that get changed by imaging software such as Deploy Studio after a successful image. If you have not used something like Deploy Studio that runs a change by host preferences file after the imaging process, then it is perhaps best to do so. Starting with 10.5 Apple introduced the Local KDC. This LKDC also needs to be unique on each machine. You may be able to use the change by host script that is in Deploy Studio to do what you need. Alternatively just use deploy studio to take and deploy your images if you have not done so already. If you are already using Deploy Studio to deploy your images then Im' not sure how you would resolve the issue other than deploying SAV after the rebuild process. If you have a pre-compiled package of the Sophos, you could tell Deploy Studio to install it after the image has finished deploying.

Check out VirtualBox if its an option? There has an update just 2 days ago. They have the ability now to create HDDs for both Parallels VMs and VMware VMs I think.

That's not strictly true. We do not use authenticated binding here and I still manage the computers fine. What you need to do is instead of using the plus button to add the computers to lists in WGM, make sure that the machines are switched on and then use the button that has three ... on it. This will bring up a list of the macs that are available on the network. You can then add these to the computer lists. It finds them by Mac address as far as I'm aware. I think you can also add them to the list by the mac address. This is how I have always done it. I have had people say that you should use authenticated binding as the computers can occasionally disappear and then are not managed by the MCX's. I've never really had a major issue though. @speckytecky Have you imaged this machine with an image taken from a mac that was already bound? If so, it is always best to image a mac before binding. Also if the sharing name in the sharing preference pane will not change, this comes from the DNS Server. make sure that the dns settings are correct. If there is an old DNS record, the mac may use it causing confusion with the naming. Its usually the reverse zone records that cause the issue IIRC.

Go to WGM and then choose a group to manage. Click on the preferences icon and then choose Finder. In here you will see the options to show Hard Disks on the desktop. This will display the Macintosh HD icon on the desktop for each user logging in.

The mac side can just use schedules found in the power settings under the system preferences in WGM. Set up the shutdown times and start up times. You can also use ARD and schedule shutdowns, log offs and restarts. The benefit of using ARD to do this is you can schedule more than one shutdown, unlike the WGM method which only allows one startup time and shutdown time. I usually have a shutdown -R script that runs for the windows xp side to reboot the machines back to the boot picker and then use a scheduled mac shutdown in ARD about 15 minutes afterwards. This allows the macs to use the startup scheduled time in WGM. If the clients are in windows when they shut down the scheduled startup time does not work and the clients do not start up in the mornings.

If the NetBoot.nbi file you have available is from the latest mac you have in your school you can boot all macs upto that date using just one file. This means that if you have 30 macs all the same then creating a NetBoot.nbi file on one means you can just NetBoot the rest straight out the box. Hope this makes sense.

This is my point about Lion's decision to hide the folder being the wrong decision. It just makes things even more complicated to resolve issues. I know you can navigate to it using the Go To folder option or even terminal but shouldn't need to. After all it's their preferences!

Synching everything could be the problem. You may need to choose which bits to sync. For example if you are using mobile accounts most likely you won't have the cache re-directed or nor the temp dir. So if Safari is used extensively then this would mean all of this data will need to be synched. I use a mobile account on my iMac which is using 10.7 at the moment connected to a 10.6 server. I have constant permission issues but this may be related to something else. However, if you are using a wireless network to work then maybe using a forced local home dir with the pupils uploading data to their server home dir that they wish to access from anywhere. You can still have kerberised access to the shares and it would alleviate the issue of the synching problem and possibly the reduced bandwidth as the synching data won't be flooding the network. However, the down side is that if they haven't uploaded something then they won't be able to access it. The networked home dirs may work but they are a strain on any network but a 10Gb fiber connected network. We have a 1Gb network here where the systems run fine usually but can slow-down occasionally. Runnign them over WiFi network I would say is perhaps not a great idea. We have done this with 15 laptops on one WAP and slowdown was an issue. We redirected the cache folder and tmp and log folders to speed things up but it was still slow. Macs don't download anything to the client when using networked home dirs. They run across the network at all times. If the laptop loses connection at any time the machine grinds to a complete halt. Sometimes the machine can come back to life other times it will beach ball till the end of time. Always needs to be a consideration when using networked accounts over a flakey network, especially one such as WiFi.

Macs don't tend to mount directly to the user's dir. They only mount the root of the share, in your case \\Server\Staff. I think the reason for this is that each user has a sites folder and a public drop box that you could take advantage of if it mounts the root of the share. If it mounted the user's home dir then this would not be possible unless you went back up the hierarchy. You can script it as some people have done in this forum. I don't tend to as I use security to restrict each user to their own dir. Every user in my case mounts the root share but has no entry to any other dir except their own. If the amount of users that are in there is the problem for browsing, you can add the home dir to the dock using WGM preferences.

There is a command that you can run to search for files/folders. You maybe able to search by name. I will find the command and post it here as soon as possible. Also I'm not sure if you know but OS X Lion now hides the Library folder. Personally I find it a PITA. As long as they cannot access the /Library folder I'm not too worried. Is there any reason you wish to hide the library folder?

Not sure if you know anything about this but I have run into an issue where if anyone logs into a machine with a different set of Printers being managed by WGM then they get added to the list. For Example, a member of staff logs in with staff-copier queue being pushed from WGM and then a pupil logs in with Pupil-Copier queue, if they go to print they see the staff-copier queue as well as their own. Have you seen this issue before. Sorry for being a little off-topic but it is related in the fact that I would deed to reset the print queues myself to alleviate this problem as pupils have access to machines that they should have.

If you have allowed the the option to see the connected servers in the sidebar, which is default I believe, then any drive that is mounted on login will be available in the sidebar as afar as I'm aware. If not but you can see any nearby servers, if you are mounting using kerberos just clicking on the servers names will mount the shares you have access to. But after saying all of that I'm running Lion on my machine with much difficulty so cannot really check things out properly.

Are these machines in any Computer lists or pointing at the OD Master. Maybe they are rejoining themselves as they are still in a Computer list and therefore being managed. I'm not sure. It may be a case that they are bound to the OD Master but usually deleting them from the Records just stops them using any preferences or logging in users. Are you going to the All records tab and selecting computers from the list?
