As long as you can work around the lack of iSCSI support is the main thing. I have done a quick search online and there does seem to be a few mentions of some companies having iSCSI initiators for the mac platform. The main thing to do is to place the AD above the OD in the authentication list found in the Directory Util. This is due to the mac client looking at the AD first for authenticating the username/password combo and then dropping down to the OD for client management prefs (MCX records). If done the other way around OD first, this would suggest that the client would look to the OD for username/password authentication instead, resulting in a login failure. This was the done thing in tiger and I have done it ever since. Whether it has changed I don't know but I would still do it now and plan to if/when we upgrade our clients. Hope this helps a little. I have also re-installed my lion server and about to write a little guide as best I can anyway. From the looks of my posts I may waffle on too much as well. Oh, and Apples documentation is poooooooor. Always out of date and never of any use really. Lacks most of the detail and also contradicts other sources sometimes. EG using Time Machine to back up a server. Yeah fine, but Time Machine doesn't support the ability to stop services to get a consistant snap-shot of the password/slapd database. Anyway, I'm ranting now abit..... Glad you're moving in the right direction.

As far as I'm aware OS X still hasn't brought iSCSI support to the table, so unfortunately you will be out of luck unless you can find a third party alternative. I know that drobo provide an iSCSI application to allow macs to support their own devices. Whether this can be gotten from elsewhere and whether it supports other devices I don't know. As far as I'm aware the process is pretty similar in Lion to the other versions. Saying that though I haven't done it yet myself. Guides for this sort of stuff more than likely won't have been written yet since most places running AD-OD integration wouldn't have upgraded to lion yet as it's very limited compared to 10.6's offering in services. I have a Lion server currently sitting on my desk. I would be more than happy to go through the process and document how I do it along the way. I need to look at it myself anyway for the near future. But I would also address the first issue I pointed out if this is a problem.

I assume the server is Lion server since it is a mac mini server. What version of Windows are you using? XP apparently has issues connecting to webdav shares. If you are not specifying the type of share you are connecting to then this maybe the problem you are seeing. The client maybe picking up the fact the folder is held in a realm which is password protected and trying to authenticate against the webdav service rather than the smb service. I'm not sure if any of that is true but theoretically it might be I haven't dabbled very much with webdav and haven't shared out a webdav folder using other methods myself.

Hello, I am starting to try and use InfoPath to build some additional services on our OpenHive install. I am looking for some good tutorials on how to go about creating things using InfoPath and Sharepoint Designer. Does anyone know where I can find said good guides? Also is Sharepoint Designer a stand-alone app like Visio? If so how much does it cost as a rough guide? Thanks.

We had some issues with Squirrelmail and any messages coming from Outlook. Depending on how they are sent depends on what the attachament is if the message is forwarded as an attachment with the doc attached to it rather than just being forwarded the message came through as a .dat file or something like that which only outlook can open. You have to check it it a specific way to see the contents. However, it was Ok. But we did move over to a roundcube installation as .dat files can be viewed inline with the messages. Roundcube seemed to handle things a bit better than Squirrelmail and overall a better webmail experience IMO. If you are running squirrelmail on an OS X server, you can install a roundcube verson and have it running really easily without damaging the default installation. I found a guide online. If your interested I can post the URL. Of course this could all be nonsense and not the problem you are seeing at all.

Hello, We have just had our OpenHive portal made available and I am trying to migrate some of our services into it. I have spoken to the provisioning team and they said that there is a resource booking template in there. Whilst looking for it I came across the help desk template. I have created a new site using the new template but now I am stuck. How do I customise it to look and feel like something similar to what I am migrating from (webhelpdesk)? Also is the process for creating the resource booking system the same? I'm still awaiting information on the training for OpenHive. I need to migrate these 2 services as soon as possible so I can close down the internal mail server. TIA

No one using LDAP authentication with MRBS?

Also did he use Office 2011 for mac to do this? If so he may need to update the Office installation. We had a problem here where any documents created in Office 2011 would not open in 2010 or any .docs in 2003 until we installed the critical update. We are now running the latest version 14.1.3 (110805). It won't help recover the docs though.

You may be able to recover some text using the text recovery option. I managed to view rows and rows of text (a word on each line) but no formatting.

Why do you need to stop after you can completed the builds? You could then go onto installing an OS, drivers etc. Then once they have done this, move on to creating a mini network between the machines that the pupils have just built, allowing them to configure the systems for access to the network. I thought of doing something similar to this. I even did some dinner time clubs where the pupils disassembled some computers, learnt about the components and then rebuilt them. We started going into the OS install (each machine had it's own OEM license of Windows). I told them that if you could save your folks from taking a machine to PCWorld and paying someone to sort out problems then it's more money towards your crimbo pressies. We are a primary school. And again here the girls were more interested.

Hello, I am trying to configure MRBS to use our OS X Server 10.6.8 Open Directory Server as the source for LDAP authentication. The services run on the same server. I currently have Joomla authenticating against this server. However, MRBS doesn't seem to want to play. I am running MRBS version 1.4.8. The only file I have configured at the moment is the config.inc.php. Do I need to touch the auth_ldap.php file as well? Has anyone else configured MRBS to use an OD server for LDAP authentication that can help me out? Initially we were authenticating against the IMAP service but we can no longer do this as we are moving to a new service out of our control. Hope you can help TIA.

The machine I used is just an example of what you can stick OS X Server on. You would perhaps compare better specced machines. Don't forget. You can also extend the AD schema too. There isn't a requirement to have an OS X machine. Also with RAID in a magic triangle system. Would this be just for disaster recovery? In a primary School it could be a little bit overkill. If you have an image of your server once built, you could potentially restore the entire partition in less than 10 minutes. The only data an OS X Server holds is the managed preferences data which can be backed up and restored in minutes. I just back up the OD data and the WGM settings. There are no user accounts to speak of and no passwords to restore since they are all in the AD. The only issue would be access to their home dirs.

Not sure if this still works. To install the Bootcamp drivers using the msi in Windows server 2003 you could open the msi file in orca and change the setting which tells the msi to only run on a valid OS. It may be able to do the same for the win 7 only msi. But the drivers would need to be XP compatible. Just to throw this out there. You are aware that the server version of OS X can go on any hardware. I currently have Lion server installed on a White Intel iMac. It's slooooooooooow but still works. You don't need hardware with the word "server" attached to the end to use the Server OS. Just thought I would mention it

How do you guys get around the "needs to be done for our job" response? We have Papercut here and while it does help to reduce duplicate documents, I wonder sometimes why we need to print certain things.

If you list the services in terminal it will tell you which kerberos realm that they have been kerberised with. The command is:- sudo klist -kt It needs to be run on the server. Again I need to point out that I am doing this on a 10.6 server and assuming that the process is the same. Try at your own risk on a live server.

As an FYI if you click on the Unix icon in ARD under the templates section is a whole list of options to choose from, each populated with the command. You just change the details in the command before you send it. Each one should also be pre-configured with the user to use for the command too.

If you have an AD connection already in place for your mac server before you promote it to an OD master it should automatically kerberise the services using the AD Kerberos realm. At least that's what used to happen in 10.6 I haven't tried a magic triangle setup under 10.7 yet. But I assume the process is the same.

Sorry I haven't replied only just seen the new posts. I have now managed to tweak a script I had for creating users to check the csv file created from the SIMS Command line. Everything works as I had hoped it would except for one thing. When I manually run the script everything works fine. The users get pulled in from the csv file and the accounts get created in the AD. The user homes are also created and the OS X default template is copied in to the newly created home dir. Then the script uses the CACLS cmd to set the perms on the folders. However, when the script is added to a scheduled task it doesn't manage to copy the folders over to the home dir and set the perms. The error is logged as a error 76 - Path not found. Am I creating the scheduled task properly? Can you even schedule a VBS file to run?

If you have restarted the servers DCs and OD master and the OD came up (which it usually does) before the Dcs then the Directory Utility will have the AD connection as Not Responding. You can either run the killall command to restart the Directory Service and then on restart it should reconnect or you can simply restart the OD master. I would just check the connection anyway even if you haven't restarted the servers. It could also be a time difference between the domains causing the AD connection to be reporting a not responding error? You could also check the connection using the dscl command.

Is the computer account still in the group that gets the proxy settings? It looks for the mac address I think.

CCC has the ability to archive old data, allowing you to keep older versions. It even has a cleanup option allowing you to keep say a month of backups. I have all data archived and CCC just copies the new stuff and data that has been changed. This gives me a month of backups and also the recent/current data.

The list if items that you have provided can all be done using StudyWiz. You can host the installation yourself, and it has the option of integrating with Google Mail and Google docs. It also has the ability to map what they call the E-Locker to the home dir in school. IMO the VLE platform is to some extent irrelevant. If staff don't want to use it then they won't use it. It just depends on the staff you have. Ours isn't very difficult to use and the staff have had 2 training sessions on how to use it, and yet it still doesn't get used as much as it should be. If the SMT/SLT are not behind it pushing it forward then it will not get used. There is only so much that we can do from the ICT side of things.

Yes. As far as I know there is no way to use ACLs in OS X 10.3.9 Yes Tiger is 10.4. All of the above assumes that the mac you are running is a Power PC based mac. If so then you can potentially go up to 10.5.8, this being Leopard. Tiger was a good version of OS X and the server even easier to support than Panther (10.3). But still there are a few hurdles that you need to jump over to get Tiger to integrate well into an AD environment if that is the direction you are thinking of going in. Leopard resolves most of Tiger's short-comings but does present a few of it's own issues. Take a look at AFP548 - Changing the world one server at a time.. It has a good bit of information regarding administering 10.3. It's where I got most of my information from when I started down the mac route.
