[wds] Recommendations please for school imaging ...
garethEds replied to soveryapt's topic in O/S Deployment
I would love to look at SCCM but the LEA told us that we couldn't as there could only be one SCCM server on the domain. We use an LEA wide domain and have delegated access to our OU only. Seems SCCM 2012 might offer a different solution. Can anyone confirm or deny this for us? Gareth -
[wds] Recommendations please for school imaging ...

Same here. This is what we do. Although CS3 goes into the image and so will that bloatware called Sibelius 7. New images are made once a year in July. Gareth -
Help to vectorise/improve our logo please

Wow. I bow to superior skills. GJE -
Yes but no need for different bits to rotate. GJE

Morning guys, Does anyone have the skill set to turn our school logo into a 3D version? One that could maybe be rotated etc? Or simply just a 3D version. I'm not worried about the text at the bottom, just the main section of the logo. I've attached the logo. Please nobody put themselves out for it - it's just for an idea I have. Many thanks Gareth

A quick tweet to Johan Arwidmark got me the rather simple answer which was a massive oversight on my side. I simply didn't update the boot file in WDS for the pExe side of things. :-( Once this was done everything worked fine. Thanks everypme. Gareth

Having just updated MDT2010 to MDT2012 we are seeing an issue where out images do not list after putting in the authentication details. Picture attached. Any ideas? We've updated the deployment shares and done everything asked of us. WAIK is up to date etc etc etc. Gareth

Well our install is broke. We installed over the top of the original and it broke. Gareth

Evening awl, I've been catching up with MDT developments this evening as MDT2012 has been released. I've been reading Johan Arwidmark - I've not read it in ages but it always provides some interesting posts. Anyhow - for those that use HP machines (us), HP have released driver packs that can be integrated into MDT or SCCM. I'm not sure which model numbers they have in there but we purchase 7700, 7800 and 7900 from John Graham over at @ict-direct so hopefully they will be in there. Hopefully this news will be of use to some of you: Deployment Research > Blog - HP takes the next step and provides ready-made driver packages for MDT and SCCM Regards Gareth

We installed MDT2012 today over the top of our MDT2010 installation knowing that we have to rebuilt it soon (it's not a perfect install). Anyways - it broke. Nothing came up. We then realised that elements needed updating - this all worked. So we tested building a machine. It got so far and then gave us a white window with a Next | Cancel option. Clicking Next restarted the machine. Weird. Anyway @rich_tech informes me that the MDT2012 installation was downloading some extra components when he left so we will take a look tomorrow. Cannot wait to get my teeth stuck into this once the exam seasoni starts and Year 11/12/13 get gone. Gareth

Thanks everyone. It's what I thought - I'm staying well clear. Gareth

I've just seen an advert for madbid.com on the TV and took a look at the site. There are references to the BBC and other media outlets saying how good it is - but has anyone here signed up for it or other similar sites? Good idea or con? Have you won an auction? Gareth

Hi, This past financial year we have been replacing our desktop PCs with reconditioned HP machings from @ict-direct. We pay around £175 for a box which usually comes with 3 or 4Gb of RAM. A new keyboard and mouse is supplied. We don't need monitors most of the time as the ones we have are fine and 19". It has saved us a fortune. £10k bought us 50 new boxes this year and we rekitted out two ICT suites. We have also kitted out the library and our SuccessMaker room. I've just ordered another 27 for use in our DT department. We pay an extra £10 per machine for a platinum warranty. That gives us 3 years. We will never by brand new again and at £175 per machine if a kid breaks one then it's cheaper to replace. The machines built onto our network using MDT without any issues. Each to their own but with budgets slashed this is the way forward for us. Gareth

I've not heard anything of this in Swansea where I am. We have to seek quotes for anything over £1000. I thought I could get around this by putting things on different order forms and numbers. Seems that it is on 'cumulative' £1000. So getting one order for £600 and one for £500 from the same company would mean I needed quotes I've never been told that I have to order from the Value Wales framework either. Funny think is I've just had a quote for 2 Dell servers and a SAN that I was told was priced to the Value Wales framework but it's the same price as another company that are not on the Value Wales framework. All very confusing but at the moment I am ordering from where I want to. Gareth

All sorted now. Half the funding has been given so I've had to re-jig. The virtualisation project has been put on hold (this was the first half of the funding). The second half is going ahead but the whole project has been agreed by the Governors. Virtualisation will now happen at 6 months. It gives me time to look at other stuff I suppose. Regards and thanks everyone for their help, Gareth

Thanks Chris. I'm off now to have a bacon, sausage and egg baguette. First one in ages but it will make me feel a bit better. LOL. Gareth

I read on here that some had had problems with Dell servers. I'll try and find the post - but it could be a needle in a haystack. As it happens at 10:15 this morning all funding was pulled back in. Frmo having some funds last night to having nothing this morning. Quite fed up at the moment. Months of work down the drain. Gareth

I've been warned away from Dell on here as they fail. GJE

Okay - so the next question - which RAID is best on the hardware we are having. Our old RM (now non-RM servers) are Raid 5 with 73Gb SCSI drives in. But this box will have 10 x 4.5Gb drives in there. Our servers have 2 x 250Gb drives in there so can I assume that mirroring is fine there? Gareth

So we could put 2008R2 on the SAN and then get this target software? Where do I get that from? Gareth

I am used to Windows OS more than anything. I think this would be the way forward for us. Gareth
