Who will still be running on Win7 and Server 2008 after Jan 2020?
TwistedHelixis replied to bodminman's topic in Windows
I don't think Windows 10 upgrade was free for schools or businesses, only for home pcs on oem or something like that. -
Unless anyone has any better options, this is my fix. Click on storage, because all the files are just in one big list and not in their correct folders I am clicking on one of the files, then on the file location (details box) I can then step back through the folders using the bred crumbs. When I have got as far back as I can I am clicking download. This then downloads all the files in all those folders I have just stepped back through. When it is downloaded I am then deleting the (stepped back) root folder, which will remove all those files from my personal Google drive. I can use the downloaded zip file to upload to my business account at a later date. This is going to be a long process and luckily the files are non Google file types as I suspect I would have even more issues. Fingers crossed that someone has a simpler solution.

It lists the old location, although its not actually there if I go in to My Drive. Some of the files say they are shared some do not. Things have got a bit odd. I tried to delete a file from the list of files in storage (personal Google), the file did not say it was shared, the file also got deleted from my business account. This is how I migrated from my personal to business On my home pc I detached Google backup and sync from my personal account, this leaves the Google folder with all the files in the local folder. I then logged in to backup and sync using my business account and pointed the sync folder to the old location and left it to sync the files. When it had finished I went into the online version of Drive for my old personal account and deleted all the files. I had a good TB of data and as far as I can tell everything is listed in my business account and not missing. What do I do, as I am stumped.

Who will still be running on Win7 and Server 2008 after Jan 2020?

One of my primary schools has said they need to keep about 5 old Windows 7 laptops for the lego club, which is not really part of the school and is self funded. I tried to run the Windows 10 upgrade on them but it will not run, and they do not have any money to upgrade the laptops. The laptops do not need to be on the internet so I was wondering what the best way would be of blocking internet access. Would using GPO to deploy a fake proxy be enough? -
we use windows backup on all our hosts and it has been rock solid for many many years. had to do a good few vm restores during that time and not had any issues.

One I have been meaning to take a look at is - https://www.mobileguardian.com/

We got the Samsung TAB A (2019) 8 inch, they have been great. We use G Suite as the MDM, although this is not perfect for what I want it does the basics.

[sims] Incompatible Database Error (only for one user)
TwistedHelixis replied to mattfuller's topic in MIS Systems
Is the machine a laptop that sometimes connects over LAN and sometimes WiFI? if so that can cause more than one version to get installed. -
I had 2tb space for my personal Google Drive but recently got offered unlimited space on my business G suite account for cheaper so went with that. About 2 month ago I moved all my docs over and deleted all my files, then deleted all the files in the bin, but storage being used is now listed as 160gb. All of drive is empty, I have nowhere near that size in emails or photos. Any ideas how I can track down where this space is getting used.

I use the free version of PDQ Deploy :0)

In the past I have had to use Windows backup to move the VM's to a new host as nothing else worked. If it was me I would try to get the checkpoint issue sorted first as that might be part of the migration issue.

Getting YouTube VR video to be immersive on Oculus Rift S
TwistedHelixis replied to TwistedHelixis's topic in Gaming
Found out that YouTube and the rift s are not compatible. Suggested workaround is to use the Steam VR YouTube app. I have tested the app and vr videos do now work as intended. -
Recently got a Rift S, played some games and then went looking for immersive videos. Found a great VR history video by the BBC where you fly in a WW2 bomber plane over Germany, its very immersive and not like you are watching a video but you feel like you are in the plane. Watched some videos on the Oculus site and they are all immersive. Did some reading up and found out the Firefox supports web3d and most of those videos are immersive. I then thought of youtube as that must have thousands of videos, which it does but none of them are immersive, it's like watching a large bend around screen, rather than feeling like you are in the middle of the action. This is all very new to me, so I am probably doing something wrong, but if anyone has any ideas then thanks.

Got the rift s for Christmas, blown my mind. It's much better than I thought, now need to buy lots of games.

Advice on strategy on Office 365/Google Classroom
TwistedHelixis replied to MrWu's topic in Cloud Services
All my schools still use word or download word docs from the internet, even though they are logged in to Gsuite, they have the choice of either. We don't seem to have any issues using ms formats in Gdocs. The staff don't normally convert them from an ms format but just view or edit them as original format using Gdocs as the writer. I on the other hand always convert them to Google's format. -
Not used the Google VR system but I know it is built for the teachers to lead the experience. I watched a video where the class where all in the same virtual world and the teacher was in the world with them but had control over what happened.

Advice on strategy on Office 365/Google Classroom
TwistedHelixis replied to MrWu's topic in Cloud Services
Well we did it the way you said not to as it was basically free and gets everyone using Google. We migrated email, calendars, documents etc to G Suite, the staff kept using the same equipment so no massive costs, and as we had installed file stream all their files were in a mapped drive. Slowly as hardware runs out we are replacing it with tablets and Chrombooks -
Just checked the sales figures and they have gone up year on year, mainly thanks to the Oculus range, other brands have crept up a little over the years. I would probably go with one of the headsets that does camera tracking from the headset itself, as its much simpler to setup in a new area.

DELL SERVER (Poweredge T610 & T420) - UPDATING BIOS...
TwistedHelixis replied to Koldov's topic in Hardware
About 5 years ago I bricked a dell server. Something to do with the iDRAC needing to be on a very specific version when another part gets updated, I had no idea about this and just updated, ouch. Recently updated a couple using the F10 at boot > Lifecycle Controller option. The Lifecycle Controller update system has recently been updated itself, and is meant to be more stable now. I have also done the ISO method mentioned above and that has been good. -
RAID Controller Battery Failure and Corruption
TwistedHelixis replied to ITGURU's topic in Windows Server 2012
I have had battery fails on a few servers over the years, funnily enough I have one with the error message now, but it has never caused me an issue. Our servers are all DELL, and I normally get a message on the screen that the RAID card has switched to write through or something similar. Generally get the error after about 7 years but have had it on much newer servers. -
Gsuite - "Send mail as" under Settings > Account
TwistedHelixis replied to timbo343's topic in Cloud Services
OK, so I have just tested this and the account they use gets sent a verification email, so they need access to that account first. Have they got round this somehow?
