Even for a small school a microserver isn't going to be man enough for this, i run a couple of them for one man band businesses and they do the job. anything more, you need a 'proper' server with a bit more grunt, ability to upgrade and some resilence, especially if this is going to be a sole server for what could be a while. Something with redundant psu and hot swap drives i think is a must in an environment like this. Unless you want some very unhappy teachers after you!! In my experience you don't scrimp on the server, it's the bit that links everything together, without it, nothing works. They need to up that budget. Also, don't pay too much attention to 'minimum' specifications:)

HP ML350 8GB ram (minimum) SBS 12 would be better 3x 146gb 15k hot swap drives 2x quad core 2-2.5Ghz Xeon processor Should do the job, add a second to add redundancy some point down the line. You weren't considering a micro server by any chance??

What version of exchange are you running?

I know it's not free, but I'd suggest DYN standard smtp, costs $20 a year and with a dynamic IP address does the job

Just had a new promethean board installed and having a random problem calibrating. You click on calibrate (board's in a mobile, so needs calibrating daily!!) up pops the calibrate screen, but as soon as you move the pen to the board it goes back to the desktop. It will do this over and over again and just occasionally it will work. The board came with two pens, so i tried it with the other one, worked perfectly, tried calibrating with the first pen again, crashes to desktop. Dodgy pen i thought, so took the pen away, leaving the one that had calibrated perfectly. Next morning however, the other pen fails to calibrate, frustated teacher tells me it took 45 attempts before it would calibrate (she counted supposedly) Anyway, i wander back, latest version of the software, board firmware is the latest. Netbook was given a clean image of XP over summer, all the cables were tight, but unplugged everything and put it back, no difference. Refused to calibrate, anyway, went away and got the other pen (the one that wouldn't work the day before) Worked perfectly today????????? It seems whichever pen you use first it won't calibrate with, but will with the other one. Random, any suggestions anyone?

I use a couple of different services, mainly i use Dyn Standard SMTP from DYNDNS, they charge on emails sent (you buy blocks of emails per day), I also use AuthSMTP as a backup. Both work nicely and do the job

Second the Asus Transformer, solid, reasonable price, does the job!! Plus the keyboard add on makes them very flexible and doubles the battery life adds full usb etc

That looks like it will do the job quite nicely! Hadn't decided on software as i didn't want to limit the control, which to me i think will be the most important factor. Not played with XMBC for a few years, ran it on a old apple tv and found it a little painful!!

I've been thinking about setting up a little media box to connect to the TV's around the house. From our sky box, we've got a hdmi splitter going to all the TV's in the house. So i was thinking if i put a hdmi switch before hand i could switch between the sky and the pc. Now for the sky we use the magic eyes so the remotes work everywhere. Need to come up with a similar solution for the PC, now both myself and my wife have iphones and my wife is very used to using her iphone to control the sonos setup we've got for music. So essentially I'm after a nice front end that will easily allow movies/tv series stored on the server to be selected using an iphone as the controller. Don't really want to go down the RDP route, would like something a little more 'sonos' like, so yo could pick the movie without even looking at the TV. Any thoughts or suggestions???

Can't say I'd consider a blu-ray recorder, did have one in my last laptop, but i didn't buy the laptop because of it and never used it as a recorder the whole time i had it. HDD is really the way to go, Blu-ray is going to be overtaken by streaming media/downloads. But if you do want a blu-recorder for a specific archiving purpose or something else, just seen this HDD & Blu-ray recorder, might be best of both worlds for you Panasonic DMR-BWT700 HDD and Blu-ray recorder combo ? reghardware

I'll second Any Video Converter, nice as it will batch convert files. great for downsizing video to go onto portable player, tablets etc

Asus Transformer is a good little tablet, great for email, links in with exchange lovely! Also the fact you can get the dock means you can use it for some proper typing once in a while. Battery life is great, works really nicely

Not deploying IE9 at any of my customers for the moment, just seems to cause grief with so many pages!! Easymail being major issue, but plenty of others, ad's misplaced, flashing and getting in the way. Random how it seems to behave differently from PC to PC :S

I'd second the Lenovo A70z's just installed a small suite of them and very impressed. I would recommend getting the desk stands for them though (about £30ish extra) Looking at HP Elite 8200 as an option for another school, will see how the quotes come out Really liked the Dell All-in-one but the new version (optiplex 790 sff if i remember) seems very pricey compared to how they used to be.

Look after a number of primary school's ranging from 100-400 nor. They range from 1-3 physical servers, the schools with one will have 2 as a minimum within the next 18 months for redundancy.
