DfE Funding for Google Classroom/Office 365.
bobsmith replied to discoveranother's topic in Cloud Services
True - but it's an exemption that is probably catching a lot of schools out - they may well have automatically added kids to their cloud tenancy without ever considering remote learning so never set up any of the extras that actually make it useful - like SDS imports. Head teachers don't always read the small print - so there's lots of nagging about getting the funding when we can't! -
DfE Funding for Google Classroom/Office 365.
bobsmith replied to discoveranother's topic in Cloud Services
From the school side of things this is the killer clause they inserted. Who is eligible? This grant is available to state-funded primary, secondary, special schools and pupil referral units in England that: -Do not currently have a digital education platform; or · -Are already using Office 365 or G Suite, but are not yet set up to assign work and communicate with pupils, and have not made accounts for their pupils Also they assign you a partner before checking for eligibility - so the partner then has to check through the criteria and tell you if you can actually get the money. So as a prime example - let's say you have o365 email in the cloud but nothing else - you're not eligible. -
Teams meetings not allowing pupils to join till organiser is present
bobsmith replied to Jamman960's topic in Cloud Services
so who is setting up these meetings? -
as a minimum for wonde to pull the user? not being a wonde user I can't answer with any authority. When you say Generic accounts - do you mean a number of staff are sharing an account for SSO?

One issue someone raised after I discussed the various solutions was that we traditionally give the students their results - not their parents. The subtle distinction here is that if we email to the parents address then the parents then have the results BUT NOT the student. This would be wrong on many levels - particularly for the 18year olds of year 13. Getting the kids set up on the student app while they are remote studying would be a herculean task - but we have to come up with a way of getting the results to them directly surely?

[sims] Capita is trying to sell off non-core businesses (SIMS is for sale)
bobsmith replied to psydii's topic in MIS Systems
When I first got into schools IT in 2002-ish, We were running RM Integris and making the move over the Facility CMIS - the whole local authority was moving from RM to Facility at the time. SIMS didn't get a look-in until 6 years ago. So yeah, there's always been alternatives, but SIMS are really good at tying you into contracts and not being super helpful when migrating away. However it's never been the job of the private company to avoid the monopoly - the state has to jump in to stop that from happening - which in this case they never really tried to do. That said I think a big change is coming in schools MIS - the competitors are circling around the old toothless lion of Capita SIMS. -
untick the "include in census box" and you're fine. I've got about a dozen dummy accounts in the SIMS for various reasons.

but not all exams results are available via EDI - so it would be awesome if we can take the student results report straight out of exams organiser and send it home. Making the report for exams aspects is a pain in the bum. Also signing parents up to the SIMS App has been an uphill struggle since we started - it's such an unhelpful interface and the fact it still doesn't even let us know what SSO provider they've selected for single sign on means we are constantly having to disable and reinvite them!

I've always found a difference until you tweak the monitors to match. That's just anecdotal of course.

For once (and only after having read the article in it's entirety) I am agreeing with the court on this one - maybe they are some issues with this case and how it could be used to overreach with this legislation - but there's already a real issue with parents/relatives posting pictures of their children/relatives under the age of 16 without their consent. Bearing in mind a lot of us on this forum work with children - how often do we have to ask people not to post pictures of us doing things that we don't really want on social media? It doesn't have to be anything illegal or wrong - just behaviors like smoking, drinking, having fun that we don't want the kids at work to be able to find.
-
dunno if this was covered in an earlier conversation - but have you tried just re-pasting the cpu to the heatsink? what's your room's ambient temps?
-
so you've got 40 kids in 40 physical rooms with a tutor or 40 tutors remotely teaching them over the internet using teams? hopefully i've got that completely wrong, but even If I didn't I thought I saw something recently about bandwith usage around 1.5Mbs per stream? https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteams/prepare-network

As much fun as playing lawyer is for some of us, the wood is being lost amongst the trees somewhat. In real terms laptops are dirt cheap - during the covid crisis we simply offered laptops to any member of staff who would actually need to get online during the shutdown for work purposes - so cleaners didn't get laptops but office staff and teachers did. We've even loaned laptops to long term supply teachers. It's simply not worth the hassle of getting into part time/full time/agency/permanent arguements. You can get crappy but brand new AMD powered laptops for £200 a pop. Many teachers didn't bother because they've got their own equipment and they're saving a fortune in time and petrol working from home. As for the very original purpose of this post - hardware purchase schemes - Personally I think they are out of date - they were dreamed up when many teachers didn't have any IT access at home - in the days when home internet often made a noise and took over your phone line (56k dialup anyone??). It'll cost more to administrate than simply buying them outright. (ok not in total but you know what I mean) You could simply give them a IT equipment allowance (like a clothing allowance in some businesses).

I know that Serco/Advanced Learning/whoever owns Facility CMIS this week - did not offer a perpetual licence - but the data in a SQL database is yours. And none of these MIS providers own MS SQL....

MS Teams meeting invite inviting users to Google Meet?!
bobsmith replied to maxrebo's topic in Cloud Services
silly question - but have you seen the evidence that they are getting the invite to google meet? -
I'd talk to someone like Salamander (https://www.salamandersoft.co.uk/) - I think some of them lurk around on here somewhere. Obviously the conventional way would be to start with the sync/migration but I'm sure with a bit of scripting you could match the records up - Salamander does this stuff for a living so I'd really seek their advice unless someone here has actually done it on their own.

8Gb? More like 24. I've yet to find the magic formula which makes it fly.

4 x 16Gb replacing ALL the old sticks not an option?

API only - it's pretty easy and means we don't have to mess around with the inventry PCs at all.

SIMS + Lesson Monitor | Registering Double-Periods
bobsmith replied to SirCaz's topic in MIS Systems
SIMS handles double lessons just fine - exceptions below: 1. different teacher for each half 2. different room for each half There's isn't an explicit setting in Lesson Monitor - thought doubles was a Nova thing. -
[sims] Unknown integration application - Keep Kids Safe v6.06?
bobsmith replied to Rawns's topic in MIS Systems
PS Financials took them over before IRIS then took them over. -
Don't use SIMS? We spent ages trying to get a proper solution for this and even gave Capita loads of money for a module that's supposed to allow something similar. If anyone has an answer I'd be amazed/

OK, I'll rephrase - a list of the students in the class is not a GDPR issue or a data breach etc. Seating plans can be put on screen - just don't put anything up that you wouldn't want to be seen by other people. MintClass has a safe mode for when you want to project the seating plan on screen and an unsafe mode for when it's just the teacher that can see it. An un-populated register would therefore be fine, as would a register with just L, / and N showing - these are the only codes we give our staff access to. Yes - agreed a T code would tell the kids something personal that shouldn't be shared willy-nilly (that I would presume they would know anyway but the point stands). If you're talking about good practice that's a whole other ballgame - but invoking GDPR everytime there's something digital involved will just weaken the argument when there really is a GDPR issue you want to win the fight on. Finally - you should have a data protection officer and they carry the can - bring it up with them.
-
Fundamentally it's fine. If you get silly over GDPR then you're really not understanding it. The caveat as mentioned by the posters above is that while the basic register is fine - what about the extra fields you are showing? FSM - not fine, medical - not fine, quick notes - not fine etc.
