I was very thankful to be in ATL a few years ago - to cut a long story short, some little wotsit made a malicious allegation, and the union-provided solicitor was invaluable.

Travelling a bit further or having different hours might be a bit more inconvenient, but nowhere near as inconvenient as not having a job, and with a trumped up disciplinary on your record and reference. Might the reason that they ‘got away with that’ be because you had no union advice and representation to fall back on? Please, please, please protect yourself - and that goes for anyone else not in a union. This isn’t about politics - it’s about someone having your back if the dark brown sticky stuff hits the fan!

It is indeed a very lonely and worrying place to be.

I wish all bosses showed that much foresight and concern for the welfare of their employees. As @mikeprice said above, teachers get the need for union membership drummed into them from the earliest days of training. When I was at college (Noah was in the year above me, if I remember correctly - before anyone else comments...), the unions were very active in recruiting first years, and the protection from accusations was one of the things that they really pushed. Teaching practice schools (in my experience) were also very conscientious in advising students to join a union. For anyone still undecided, think back to the last safeguarding training that you received - and then ask yourself what you would do if an accusation like that were levelled at you...

And there was me thinking I was just a cynical old wotsit... glad I wasn’t the only one who thought that!

Now, I’m not clever or scientifically minded like you lot, but I’ve just had a bit of an idea that I thought I’d run past you. Instead of all this battery malarkey, we could fit a bike with a few bits of metal all bolted together - a couple of cylinders, some pipes, pistons; that kind of thing. Then we could get a type of oily liquid (we could call it... oh, I dunno, something like ‘petrol’?), make the petrol explode inside the cylinders, which would make the pistons go up and down and make the wheels turn. Whaddaya think? @mikeprice, what have you started?

I suspect the people who queue up to sell us new batteries might have something to say about this...

No hard hat needed from me - and my political preferences and dislike of the current government are reasonably well-known, here! I would rather see a ‘U-turn’ for the right and necessary reasons than a stubborn and irrational digging in of heels. My contempt comes either when the opportunity for putting things right with a U-turn is refused purely out of stubbornness or an unwillingness to admit that the original decision may have been wrong (ref TBW “You turn if you want to...”etc) or conversely when a U-turn is made; not because it is the right thing to do, but as a blatant piece of electioneering or political opportunism.
