At the age of 16, made my debut on drum kit (I’m carp, by the way) playing for a show at my mum’s school. Daughter of John Richards, former Wolves footballer, was in my mum’s class at the time. Conversation went as follows: Me: hi #oldest daughter - are mum and dad coming to concert tonight? Daughter: yes, and my uncle Bev is coming too. Yep, you’ve guessed it - made my totally inept debut on kit with Bev Bevan (drummer for ELO, for the younger ones among you) sitting in the front row of the audience! He was kind enough not to laugh out loud, but the grin said it all...

It’s what I initially said about the method of sound production - all brass instruments work in the same way; the vibration started by the buzzing of lips against the rim of the mouthpiece makes the column of air inside the brass tubing vibrate, making the sound. Which is why, incidentally, a saxophone is not a brass instrument, because it uses a reed. Not heated, @elsiegee40, or at least not on my part - but having been a brass player and conductor in a variety of orchestras, brass bands, wind bands and brass ensembles at various points over the last 50 years, I have played most brass instruments at one point or another - including both French and tenor horn. French horn was undoubtedly the trickiest, although I still think the oboe was the most difficult instrument of all the ones that I’ve attempted to play (apart from the triangle of course...)

Just been outside. The water temperature is still a bit cold at this time of year, so I’m retiring from the discussion at this point. (but I know I’m right - and if you don’t believe me check out the mouthpieces on a horn and a trumpet...)

Ok, at the risk of becoming amphibious, I’ll add my two-pennorth: A horn is a wind instrument (as are all brass and woodwind) but not woodwind. It is most definitely a brass instrument in terms of construction, materials, method of sound production, but from my (not inconsiderable) experience of orchestral playing over the last 35 :rolleyes:years, the major issues appear to be quite a few horn players refusing to have anything to do with that uncouth lot at the other end of the row - ie, they are brass players, but would rather not associate themselves with the brass section. Check out the pub at the end of the gig; the trombones and trumpets are in the bar, the tuba player is usually under a table somewhere, the viola section have gone to the wrong pub and the horn section are in the lounge with the oboes. (The percussion are still back at the venue packing up, but that’s a gripe for another time...) And, before anyone brings up the rotary valve ‘thing’, please search for Canadian Brass on YouTube (Pachelbel’s Canon or the Bach toccata and fugue in D minor are both well worth listening to) and check out the valves on Chuck Daellenbach’s tuba. Now, if anyone needs me, I’ll be in the pond...
