Home Access Plus is good and free!

Quick question, I go to a lot of schools, a lot of which have iPads, but they won't want to splash out on a Mac to initially set them up. What I want to know is, can I buy one Mac and use that to manage multiple schools via Apple Configurator? And would it be possible to keep them all seperate, wouldn't like them all combined as it'd confuse matters. Ta!

Did you have roaming profiles set up already? If not, they can cause some problems. And for the different subnet, add another scope on DHCP maybe?

Off the top of my head: Open or create the GPO and link it accordingly, then I think the path is: User config - Win settings - folder redirection For desktop, create a share on the server named "StudenDesktops" then set permission for Students to read only and whack all your links in there, then open the above path on Group Policy Management, enter the folder location for desktop and that's that. Then for the others, you can just choose to link it to the users folder.

Are you familiar with group policy?

You should be able to achieve this with redirected folders! Plus if you set the desktop to the same folder with shortcuts for everyone, they'd all have the same desktop, then don't grant them exclusive rights to it and set the folder permission to read only.

is it to stop them saving locally or something? If that is the reason, use redirected folders.

Not sure how legal it is, but I know some schools 'give away' their machines to staff/governers/maybe parents, in exchange for a 'donation' to the school.

To be honest it would probably be cheaper to buy any laptop caddy and there are ones cheaperthan lapsafe and buy a decent access point like a Unifi AP and just put it in or on the trolley somewhere. That, or if they're on a budget actually have a look at Unifi, it's a cheap solution to get a school wireless on a budget.

2,500 people, which probably isn't even near a percent of the products sold. More than likely is mistreatment though, they may be made out of aluminium, but they're a lot weaker than they used to be, given Apples 'make it as thin as possible' strategy and they do look like stress/bruise marks on the ones shown. Heck, my friends GF sat on his iPad Air 2 and bent it and on the new MacBook the lids have flex. Literally all it could talk is a knock or stick something on top and that's it! Also note how it's MacBooks not iMacs.

I assume you mean patching as in socket to patch panel, rather than path panel to switch? If someone had to make patch cables from switch to panel for a whole building, my heart goes out to them, would take a while and probably cost more ha. But I either get all my gear from Scan or eBay, depending how soon I need it.

It's saved me a few times! Although I did have a similar thing happen the other day, needed to install an iOS update, deleted 100+ pictures, cleared up a couple of hundred MB and for some reason, four one minute videos were taking up around 2GB of space.

Just back it up, stick it in safe mode and start from scratch.

I learnt alongside CC4, the initial concept is brilliant, but for the price it sometimes seems hard to justify. As it stands, I'd go Vanilla everyday, I find it easy to manage, GPOs are easy to make, AD is easy to use, really isn't much to get your head round. As for deployment and better AD/Asset management, I've been using PDQ Deploy and PDQ Inventory, for what it is, it's is very cheap, powerful and literally in all my schools, it's been click and go, no settings or anything, can't recommend it enough.

I've used 7 on a touch screen. It's really not cut out for it. Wait for 10, the choice between a start menu or tiles then!

Assuming it's a High School you're talking about: We installed VirtualBox on select machines for the new IT course requirements, you should be allowed to use VL to licence any OS or use XP mode which is free anyway, then we had a mapped drive set and network access restricted within VB and set VB to reset to a new image every restart. Thenwe filled it up with small basic, app maker and anything developing related, that way they can test, it's secure and if it breaks, restart!

Can work out cheaper for smaller schools such as primaries. By the time the OS needs upgrading, the PC probably does too, so saves some of the smaller, less well of schools a few quid. Plus I'm fairly sure, even if you have a volume licence, each machine must have a licence key stuck on it somewhere, although the version doesn't have to be the latest as that's what you pay the VL fee for.

There's no reasons for or against really. Down to preference. Had any feedback from staff and pupils?

Simple one, but is it clean? I've had this a lot with laptops, trackpad gets greasy and dirty and a bit of alcohol based cleaner does the trick.

Wasn't aimed directly at you. But nobody was left hanging upside down, they were stuck on the lift hill, secondly the monorail probably had issues because of the weather, metal expands in heat. Nothing at all outrageous, life threatening or out of the ordinary, just the media blowing it out of proportion, then people jumping on the band wagon.

This is really doing my head in, I wish people would just think for themselves and not read the headline of an article, then not read the rest and swear it's the gospel truth. Rides break, probably a lot more than you think. Air especially, it was one of the first coasters of its kind, think of it as Vista, looks pretty, the concept is great, but it has niggles that need sorting. Most have been sorted now to be fair, but then it is also an aging ride, the older a ride is, the more maintenance it requires. I've broke down on air once, exactly where that car has stopped. Nobody was bothered. The reason it often stops is sometimes a car may enter a run too early, cutting the whole thing out, and by early I mean a second out could trip it. Rides break everywhere, I don't think I've ever been to a park where a ride hasn't had some downtime for the duration of the day. They're expensive sophisticated pieces of equipment and there's loads to go wrong. What happened at Towers is tragic, but things like this happen sadly. Cars crash every day, planes crash, trains crash, tragic, but people need to move on. If everyone said "I'm not going on that again" after an incident, we'd all be rolling about in bubble suits wishing we were dead because life would be that boring. /rant

True, but sometimes it's not cost efficient and that doesn't take into account having issues with Microsoft's site, doesn't take into account issues at a local exchange, onsite hardware issues, the fact some schools are tied to their LAs for internet access, etc.. Plus, if your SLA is good enough, you shouldn't have to worry about mass amounts of downtime as it'd be a breach of contract.
