[wanted] SMART Technologies Serial to USB adapter cables
Network_Boy posted a topic in Classified Adverts
Have just started working at a school who still have two very old SMART 500/600 boards, which use a serial connector. I want to install new PCs in those rooms, but I need 2 SMART serial to USB adapter cables. Does anyone have any that we could have/purchase? Thanks all! -
Hi All, Our MAT Business Manager is currently looking into management software for our two (probably soon to be a couple more) pre-schools. Does anyone know of any specialist MIS that would do this? Here is what the Business Manager would like it to do: "... invoicing, debtor reporting and management, registers, staffing schedules & rota, letters functionality, waiting list, and most importantly an early years funding calculator." We currently use SIMS at the other Primary schools in our MAT. Please excuse my ignorance, but does anyone know whether SIMS can do all of those things? Ta muchly.

Ah OK, thank you. I shall give this a whirl!

I've also had absolute nightmares with this terrible, terrible software. We subscribe to their PASS assessment software. I set up the original sittings in June 2016. CSV import from SIMS, was pretty painless. All worked well. Then I had to set up for the same assessment in June 2017. As this was a new academic year, all the students in the system all had the incorrect year groups and class names. Turned out the only way to edit this information was to go into EVERY individual record, and edit them that way. There was no bulk edit process. Getting all the current student information correct, archiving old year groups, and removing students who had left took over 8 hours. It was like pulling teeth. One of our teachers has now subscribed to their spelling test software, so I'm now looking into doing the academic rollover information editing again. When I moaned about the lack of a bulk process last June, I was promised that this would be fixed by September 2017. I've just logged in again now, and unless I'm missing something, it looks exactly the same and there doesn't seem to be any bulk edit process. I've sent them a support email, no reply yet. I will not be happy if I have to sit there and do another 8 hours of individual record editing! How can (from what I can garner) a market-leading software provider produce such inadequate software? Surely the year rollover process is fairly integral!

School Nativity Performance Professional Filming
Network_Boy replied to Network_Boy's topic in AV and Multimedia Related
Just checked our policy. It does state that explicit permission forms will be given out for events such as this, so I'll make sure that the Head does this before any filming takes place. Assume that we would also be covered under the GDPR if only the kids whose parents had signed the explicit permission form were filmed? -

Thanks Elsie. Filming and distribution is already part of their video/photo permissions form. Is there a reason over and above this why they would need to have explicit permission for each particular filming instance? -

Thanks Mike. That's a great idea actually. I'd just have to work out the logistics of making sure any kids who can't be filmed/photographed were'nt there for the filmed session. Do you mind if I PM you to ask a couple of questions about devices used etc? -
School Nativity Performance Professional Filming
Network_Boy replied to Network_Boy's topic in AV and Multimedia Related
All in hand thanks Matthew. We have a spreadsheet of all of our kids' video/image consent. Those not allowed to be filmed would have their parents attend one of the rehearsals that isn't being filmed, and wouldn't be part of the filmed performance. -

That's a thought. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll put word around and see if any of the local institutions can help. -

That's what I was thinking. In terms of video we can do that alright, but the sound would probably be a bit naff. -
Has anyone used an external company to film their school nativity performance? Our Head would like to record this year's performance with a view to letting parents purchase copies of it. Ideally it would be an arrangement with no financial risk to the school if we didn't sell enough copies.

Thanks enjay. I've instructed staff only to download the safeguarding documents if absolutely necessary, and only on school PCs, so hopefully they'll stick to that. It's the compliance of the Apple/Google/Microsoft servers that I'm mostly wondering about. I know there are laws about data safeharbours and servers only being located in Europe etc - however I don't remotely know the ins and outs and whether these server location laws will be part of UK GDPR law. Apologies if my ramblings about Photos and full backups was confusing. I'm aware of the difference. My concerns are more about any sort of backup - full device or otherwise - and their being turned on by default in the main OS ecosystems. My go-to position on this is just to turn everything off until we have clarification about what is and isn't acceptable under GDPR.

Hi All, I've been doing some thinking lately about data protection and the use of auto-backup solutions such as iCloud, google backup, onedrive etc. Our staff members all have iPads. If their iCloud backup and photo backup is turned on, and they have any photos of our students on their iPad, those photos will be getting backed up to Apple's servers. The same goes for android/windows devices if their respective photo backup solutions are turned on ('on' seems to be the default setting). We also use a piece of safeguarding software which is accessed through any browser. Included in this software is the ability to upload files, such as case referrals etc. Obviously this is highly sensitive data. To view these uploads whilst logged in through a browser, you have to download them. I'm concerned that if users log in and do this on a mobiole device, their download folder may be getting backed up to an Apple/Google/Microsoft server without them even knowing it. I'm assuming in both of these situations, the GDPR guidelines for data protection would be broken. Does anyone have any further clarification on this? At the moment, I'm telling staff to turn off iCloud/photo backup. I'm also instructing them to only view the Safeguarding uploads on a school PC. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks!

LGFL email shared mailboxes on iOS

That's correct. Have a go at the steps above and it should work. Is a slightly better solution than safari. Let me know how you get on. Cheers. -
LGFL email shared mailboxes on iOS
Network_Boy replied to Network_Boy's topic in London Grid for Learning (LGfL)
I've found a way of doing it. If anyone else knows a better way, let me know. Here's how I did it: 1. Sign into LGFL staffmail through web browser. 2. Right-click on your name on the left navigation panel, select "Add shared folder...". 3. Type the name of the shared folder and select it when it appears to add it. 4. Install the official Microsoft "OWA for iPad/iPhone" app on your device. 5. Open the OWa app, click "Continue". 6. Enter your ***@lgflmail.org email address and select "Continue". 7. A message will appear saying "Couldn't find your settings". Select "Advanced". 8. Enter your password in the password field. Enter your USO username into the User name field. Enter "LGFLMAIL" into the Domain field. Enter "mail.lgflmail.org" into the Server field. Leave the "Server requries SSL" option ticked. Select "Sign in". 9. Select "Allow" on the permissions prompts that appear. 10. Click on the double arrows (>>) in the navigation pane on the left, scroll down and select the desired shared mailbox. -
Has anyone managed to figure out a way of accessing LGFL email shared mailboxes on ipad or iphone? Atomwide support say that the native Mail iOS app isn't capable of doing it, and they couldn't recommend any other ways. Ta muchly!

Group policy printer preferences - Windows 7 - Issue overnight
Network_Boy replied to eddyc's topic in Windows 7
Yes I have disabled the live protection and behaviour monitoring on our Sophos policies. All clients are now logging in, but I would say that they are slower than normal - perhaps by about 15-20 seconds (although I haven't actually done any proper timing). I will re-enable the live protection and behaviour monitoring later and see if all clients still log in successfully. -

Latest Atomwide update 17:33 03/05/16: We made a number of adaptations to the DNS configuration on Friday to insulate the LGfL DNS servers from this type of third party issue, and monitoring over the weekend indicated that these were successful in achieving much improved performance. However, further changes had to be made this morning as the issue continued. LGfL monitoring indicated that Sophos had resolved the issue with their servers at 12.20 pm today, and we have now had formal confirmation from Sophos that the problem has been resolved. Normal service has now been resumed. The adaptations that were implemented will be left in place to ensure that we are protected from similar third party issues in the future. We apologise for any inconvenience this issue may have caused. Anyone tried logging in this morn? Problems gone away? -

I should point out that Atomwide are a managed IT Support service, who serve all London schools who have their Internet connection from LGFL (London Grid For Learning). Is everyone else on here who's having an issue an LGFL school, or is this a national issue? -

Atomwide will be reporting this to Sophos - so they should be chewing their ear off already. You're right, though - more complaints the better. -

Update from Atomwide Support, which must be the same issue as all Sophos people on here are having:

3rd May 09:54 We are aware of ongoing issues with DNS performance. Our analysis shows slow response times from Sophos thereby affecting access to websites, particularly from Schools running Sophos Live Protection. While we continue to investigate this with Sophos, you may wish to temporarily switch off Sophos Live Protection. This can be done by opening Sophos Enterprise Manager and under policies select your Anti-Virus and HIPS policy (most schools use the Default policy). Right click the policy and select "View/Edit Policy" From here select "Sophos Live Protection" and untick "Enable Live Protection" Further updates to this issue, including when it will be safe to turn Live Protection on, will be posted to this case. 3rd May 11:48 Sophos have confirmed that they have been experiencing capacity issues with their service from the end of last week. They have advised that the performance issue should be temporary and they are actively working on a resolution. A limit on the number of queries to the same server has been implemented on the LGfL DNS servers – we’re expecting this to stabilise other services, such as email, and internet access for schools who do not use Sophos. Apologies for the inconvenience caused and we will continue to follow up with Sophos.
